My first listen to Bud Shank was at Howard Rumsey's Light House in Hermosa Beach throughout the summer 1958................he played mostly flute that incredible summer of my west coast stay. He and Paul Desmond were the embodiment of the 'West Coast Sound' (Cool). Hard to believe that Pandora has no bio for Mr Shank.
At North Texas State, as a Jazz Studies major in 1982, I sat in disbelief at how anybody could sound so damn great! Bud Shank was a SWINGING SOULFUL alto Saxophonist with a melodic gift from God! Later in the years, I caught up with him in Anchorage, Alaska, performing with the LA FOUR! What a fantastic group!! These memories are burned into my psyche, and will never be forgotten.
Long Live Bud Shank, America's Alto genius of Bop and West Coast Cool.
We lost Bud in the last year after he lived into his 80's. Although admittedly I liked his work in his earlier years more than his later efforts, he remained both fresh and viable to the end. Even at 80, he still gone way too soon.
