Norman Petty used a local Clovis, NM vocal group called the Picks for background on many of his artist's tracks. The Crickets never did sing backup on the tracks recorded at the NorVaJak studio on 7th St.
If you are ever in Clovis be sure to check and see if you can visit the studio. It has been restored and resembles the actual look from when Buddy recorded.
