Burzum
Biography
Burzum is the one-man project of Varg Vikernes (born Christian Vikernes, aka Count Grishnackh), perhaps the most notorious figure in Norwegian black metal. Although Burzum has an unpredictably experimental bent -- encompassing black metal, industrial, electronic, and dark ambient music -- Vikernes will forever be associated with his conviction for the 1993 murder of former Mayhem bandmate Euronymous. It wasn't the first time Vikernes had run afoul of the law; he had been a suspect in arsons directed at historic Norwegian churches in Bergen, a perception not helped by his use of a post-fire photograph of the Fantoft Kirke church on the cover of Burzum's 1993 Aske EP. Coupled with Vikernes' racist, virulently anti-Judeo-Christian beliefs was a sort of nationalistic pride, a longing to return to the pre-Christian pagan culture and religion that had marked the glory days of the Vikings; this paganism became a frequently recurring theme in black metal circles, and led to the Norwegian metal sound being tagged Viking metal in some quarters.
As for his recording career, Vikernes issued the eponymous Burzum debut in 1992 under his Count Grishnackh alias (taken from a J.R.R. Tolkien book); it was largely a typical black metal record, although it featured a few synth dabblings and slower passages, neither of which had yet found much favor on the scene. 1993's Det Som Engang Var expanded on those innovations while retaining an overall metal flavor. Hvis Lyset Tar Oss (If the Light Takes Us), released in 1994 shortly after Vikernes' imprisonment, integrated synthesizers more fully into the Burzum sound, and the all-electronic closing track foreshadowed Burzum's later move into dark ambient. The well-received, industrial/electronic-tinged Filosofem appeared in 1996, although it had been recorded (but not mixed) prior to Vikernes' incarceration.
With the vaults thus exhausted, Burzum's future appeared to be in doubt, but Vikernes managed to begin recording entirely instrumental synthesizer albums while in prison. A concept work recounting a well-known Norse myth, Daudi Baldrs (Balder's Death), was released in 1997 as the first installment of a planned trilogy. The second portion, the mythology-themed Hlidskjalf, appeared in 1999, featuring an equipment upgrade and a correspondingly fuller sound. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

I ask a question to all the Black metal "community" in Pandora (and maybe to Pandora "owners" too, if they read this). Why there's no Music from the great Black Metal band "ANCIENT" here??

Ah, nothing like burzum. Everyone hates it, I love it. Let the haters hate. Everyone I know who hates Burzum have one thing in common: They're all straight-edg e scene faggots.
Enjoy the music. |

Det som engang var took my mortal breath away, both the album and later track on Hvis Lyset tar oss.

I've taken a little bit of influence from Burzum. His vocal style makes for great atmospherics when used sparingly.

I just starteed likeing Burzum last night, I never gave them a chance. Heard some old stuff that didn't catch my attention. Great Fmuken band though, I underestimat e d Count Fishsnack.

Burzum/Aske and Det Som Engang Var are excellent albums. Very minimal and primal music with that addictive guitar buzz.

normally I stand by never saying that a band "isnt good" or "sucks" because they could be great, and just not my personal taste. In this case, I love metal, but this guy just plain isnt good... at anything... mostly, by the sound of things, his life. Seriously, i have heard and listen to some bad music, but this just isnt music. Might make a damn funny movie though.

all you new metal posers need to shut up about Burzum.....a t least it's something that sounds different, and he has refused to sell out like all of the bands today....Ame r i c a n Idol is what is ruining music today.....

I learned about Pandora through Burzum, the racist murderer.. you killed someone your and prison and your bored? what do ya do? well let's record an album.. murderers making records, writing books, the prison talk show circuit. WELL SO MUCH FOR PUNISHMENT, I HOPE THERE WAS A BIG BLACK NORWEGiAN WHO MADE BURZUM HIS BI.TCH (if there is such a thing) a black norwegian? this dude even tried to escape, and got some more time added to his maximum lenient sentence of 21 years. I don't give a crap th

Burzum (at least the black metal stuff) is still better than a lot of the newer s**t

I have so many friends into this. I've never been able to identify with it, as much as I try. Can't take the ultra thinness of the sound...now this Dunklheit song of the rarities...i t ' s def. not awful to me, but it's not something I want to listen to more than a few times. I wish I understood the appeal but that's other people's reality tunnel, not mine.

Ah Burzum Burzum Burzum. Not much to say about this guy. I as wel would like to hear his experiments in jail. Can't say its much of a suprise that hes been accused for burning churches. Yeah a few good songs. Definitely has a legacy haha yeah only downside is that I get tired of him realy fast but hes still good.
|

I think these guys take Dungeons & Dragons waaaaay too seriously.

Key To The Gate is a good song to hear if you're looking for an introduction to Burzum; it's cold and beautiful, and contains a guitar solo that will have you break out in goosebumps if you're listening intently enough. Burzum is my favorite Norwegian black metal artist, and I've been listening to Black Metal for over a decade. No other band captures that cold atmospheric sound that Burzum created on albums like Aske, Det Som Engang Var, and Filosofem.

||
what little i know about viking music i know i love burzum-i want to hear those instrumental cd's made in jail.
|

Steve Huey obviously has no idea what Viking metal is. Burzum never played that style.
"this paganism became a frequently recurring theme in black metal circles, and led to the Norwegian metal sound being tagged Viking metal in some quarters" That's just plain wrong. Black metal and Viking metal do not sound alike and have nothing to do with each other except the fact that some bands have combined the styles and that Bathory helped create both of those genres. |

right now listening to a song titled Stemmen Fra Tarnet..
perhaps not the best song to listen to as an intoduction to this artist? vocals are horrible. drums are very bland and the guitar is hollow. understandin g this could be a song from his 'prison' albums and that may be some explination, i don't say the artist is horrible. but the song is. |
