Tool
Biography
Tool's greatest breakthrough was to introduce dark, vaguely underground metal to the preening pretentiousness of art rock. Or maybe it was introducing the self-absorbed pretension of art rock to the wearing grind of post-thrash metal -- the order really doesn't matter. Though Metallica wrote their multi-sectioned, layered songs as if they were composers, they kept their musical attack ferociously at street level. Tool didn't. They embraced the artsy, faux-bohemian preoccupations of Jane's Addiction while they simultaneously paid musical homage to the dark, relentlessly bleak visions of grindcore, death metal, and thrash. Even with their post-punk influences, they executed their music with the ponderous, anti-song aesthetic of prog rock, alternating between long, detailed instrumental interludes and tuneless, pseudo-meaningful lyrical rants in their songs.
Tool, however, had a knack for conveying the strangled, oppressive angst that the alternative nation of the early '90s claimed as its own. So, the band was able to slip into the definition of alternative rock during the post-Nirvana era, landing a slot on the third Lollapalooza tour in 1993, which helped their first full-length debut album, Undertow, rocket into platinum status. By the time the band delivered their belated follow-up, Ænima, in 1996, alternative rock had lost its grip on the mainstream of America, and their audience had shaped up as essentially metal-oriented, which meant that the group and the record didn't capture as big an audience as their first album, despite debuting at number two on the charts. After a co-headlining slot with Korn on Lollapalooza '97 wrapped up, Tool remained on the road, supporting Ænima until well into the next year.
During their usual extended hiatus between albums, Maynard James Keenan decided to use his downtime productively by forming a side project, dubbed A Perfect Circle. The band's 2000 debut, Mer de Noms, was a surprise hit, while their ensuing tour was a sold-out success as well. With Tool breakup rumors swirling, the band put the speculation to rest by re-entering the recording studio and issuing the stopgap B-sides/DVD set Salival late the same year. Finally, May 2001 saw the release of Tool's third full-length release, Lateralus, which debuted at the number one position on the Billboard album chart and became the band's biggest hit. After the obligatory several-year sabbatical to pursue other projects, the group returned with another chart-topper, 10,000 Days, in 2006. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato, All Music Guide

f**k it cut me off. Also check out The Human Abstract. They are all as deep as tool, but their music is much more complex, not repetitive, and mostly asymmetrical . youll understand why i grew out of them. they are complex on all levels, tool needs some new riffs. they are still sick, and ill always love them. these guys are just truly better. see what you think

honestly, this was my fav band forever. when i saw them on their lateralus tour, i was blown away. saw them on 10000 days, and it was not as magical. this band has some of the most intriguing lyrics for mainstream. but here's where i make a lot of you guys mad; i grew out of it. they did, however, open me up to death/prog/m e l o d i c metal, which i think is the best thing that happened to man, musically. You guys need to check out Between the Buried and Me, Protest the Hero, All Shall Perish, a

duh, it's tool, possibly the defining band of a generation. probably the greates vocalist of all time. they are one of the greatest and will be forever remembered as such. a band that others are compared against. immitation the ultimate flattery. too bad noone can compare. i wouldn't trade my newbie tool listening experiences for anything. the most influential band in my life.
Did you have a chance to taste the wine? I am curious about them. I can't get them out here.

Hooker with a Penis - I'm the man and you're the man and he's the man as well, so you can point that f'n finger up your a**. I think Tool made it pretty clear as to his thoughts on the subject.
downward--ch e a t e d ? - N O ! ! Maynard gives us what we all want- some rockin', thought provoking, kick-a** music!!!- who cares what he does in his spare time!

To each their own. Live and let live. Dare to be tolerant. Pass not judgement lest thee be judge as well. Wake up and smell the roses. Walk and chew bubble gum at the same time. Don't run with scissors. A bird in the hand is as good as two in the bush. Diddling one's self too much can make you go blind. Pork... the other white meat. Dog spelled backwards is God. Veni, vidi, vici. I'm rambling incoherently now.

well the only reason I say yes is that I have found that advocating drug use is dangerous and counter productive to the goals of man, america is still very young and has yet to discover as many ways of getting "high" besides instant drug usage. I say this in jest too as many of my best introspectiv e and musical wonders came on with the use of psychadelic drugs. The problem is differentiat i n g what is a drug and what is a sacrement.

assault on the ear... hmm i like that slip69. thats exactly what they do verbal they attack the musician instead of the music, i think its more personal for them that way and then they can get there kicks off just that much more. one man hate mobs as i stated earlier on the nin page. thats all they are. one man hate mobs trying to sell something that no one wants to buy. they feal cheated by the artist i guess. by i sure dont. does any one feel that they have been cheated by maynard?
TOOL MMMMM Let me think thier multi layred music fandango thats produced by this rockin band is a plesant lyrical and musical assualt to the ear. If you don't like it don't listen !!!!!!!
I think people attack the person when they realize they can't attack the music.
What I don't understand are these crusades that some people have on Pandora where they constantly attack a band because they don't like it. It is one thing to have an intelligent discussion, but most critics I see on Pandora just seem to have nothing better to do than to show their ignorance and look stupid on the internet. |
I see what you are saying, and I agree, I think. Criticizing the music and not the person. Unfortunatel y , the music and the artist are too closely related to avoid that part. I don't care about Maynard selling wine. It has nothing to do with the music. In the case of MJ, his other "activities" won't stop me from listening to the Thriller album from time to time. I think that ignorance and an overinflated sense of self righteousnes s make people attack a "person" in this kind of discussion.
jessica your right-299 million people cant be WRONG michael jackson sold more recors in a week than tool has-so therefore MJ is better-pleas e dont critisize mj or anyone else-dont critisize donald trump-look how much money he has made-what graduate school did you go to-i want to send my daughter there-cuz they made you one smart cookie.
Mort- right-art in any form generates criticism- as it should-we live in America after all- land of free speech-- but IF anyone chooses to critisize- it should be about their particular 'art' - not the artist's 'personal' life-- anyone who just says "this sucks" with no backup just has prior prejudices
There is nothing wrong with criticism. The problem is when people just bash the music because it "sucks." The fact that Tool does generate such animosity means they are doing something right. If no one talked about it, then it wouldn't be affecting people. That is what Tool wants to do, affect people. That is what art does. I love their music. Can't say I am crazy for Puscifer though. Just goes to show that it isn't just Maynard making Tool popular.
Jess- so true!!!!!- Unless one makes music that people enjoy AND talk about- how can you critisize?
get over yourself. When you write something that millions of people will buy, then you might have the right to criticize the music I buy. Hmmmmm but then you would just be a douche
I love how this band generators pure haters. If you don't like it move on. Sex Pistols may be legends but I couldn't stand it. Just because I don't like doesn't mean it is not good. Some people seem to think that they own the rights to what is good and what is bad in music. I have news for you, when a band sells 2 million records in a world of billions of people and they are music legends, that means there are billions and billions of people who don't listen to there music or like it.
Make sure you all listen to Maynard's new music: Puscifer!!! I love them!!
The more I listen to them; the more hooked I get. The music hypnotically pulls you in.
has anyone noticed that u basically cant find Tool on music download places (Itunes, WalMart, etc.)
Tool's songs unfurl like a petals of a rose - albeit an evil, black rotting rose. I appreciate the ebb and flow of their music. Beauty and melody contrasted with darkness and pain....sigh . . . . I love Tool
I like the Lateralus album the best. Live your life constantly spiraling out. I also love the instrumental for Reflection. The music is for deep thinkers and relaxing while you do so.
Stinkfist is a good track. It's interesting how two of Tool's albums had singles that involve the idea of how the media is screwing with all of us, numbing our brains. Vicarious is the other one. Stinkfist centers around the way that television etc, show us so much that we can't feel anything anymore, Vicarious has a message of living through all the sht we see on the news and in magazines, etc.
Tool is the "thinking person's" metal band- their lyrics AND music is beautifully complex- & I agree- open to everyone's own interpretati o n - - to not appreciate that says that you're just an IGNORANT IDIOT
"I sold out long before you ever even heard my name" I love the way tool mocks capitalism while embracing it. Just shut up and buy! Good stuff.
I love Tool.
I have loved them since 2006, around the time 10,000 Days came out. They are so influential in bands today, and any rock/progres s i v e band would kill to be how they once were and still are. Their music is unique and powerful, and their lyrics actually mean something... And who is better on drums than Danny Carey?? Tool is just amazing... |
See, but that's what I like about Tool. Their music has that dark, and dirty appeal...ha ha.
stinkfist-ma n - m a y n a r d sure has a way with poetic imagery.stin k f i s t - t h a n x but no thanx-going to delete,right about now...
