Tool
Biography
Tool's greatest breakthrough was to introduce dark, vaguely underground metal to the preening pretentiousness of art rock. Or maybe it was introducing the self-absorbed pretension of art rock to the wearing grind of post-thrash metal -- the order really doesn't matter. Though Metallica wrote their multi-sectioned, layered songs as if they were composers, they kept their musical attack ferociously at street level. Tool didn't. They embraced the artsy, faux-bohemian preoccupations of Jane's Addiction while they simultaneously paid musical homage to the dark, relentlessly bleak visions of grindcore, death metal, and thrash. Even with their post-punk influences, they executed their music with the ponderous, anti-song aesthetic of prog rock, alternating between long, detailed instrumental interludes and tuneless, pseudo-meaningful lyrical rants in their songs.
Tool, however, had a knack for conveying the strangled, oppressive angst that the alternative nation of the early '90s claimed as its own. So, the band was able to slip into the definition of alternative rock during the post-Nirvana era, landing a slot on the third Lollapalooza tour in 1993, which helped their first full-length debut album, Undertow, rocket into platinum status. By the time the band delivered their belated follow-up, Ænima, in 1996, alternative rock had lost its grip on the mainstream of America, and their audience had shaped up as essentially metal-oriented, which meant that the group and the record didn't capture as big an audience as their first album, despite debuting at number two on the charts. After a co-headlining slot with Korn on Lollapalooza '97 wrapped up, Tool remained on the road, supporting Ænima until well into the next year.
During their usual extended hiatus between albums, Maynard James Keenan decided to use his downtime productively by forming a side project, dubbed A Perfect Circle. The band's 2000 debut, Mer de Noms, was a surprise hit, while their ensuing tour was a sold-out success as well. With Tool breakup rumors swirling, the band put the speculation to rest by re-entering the recording studio and issuing the stopgap B-sides/DVD set Salival late the same year. Finally, May 2001 saw the release of Tool's third full-length release, Lateralus, which debuted at the number one position on the Billboard album chart and became the band's biggest hit. After the obligatory several-year sabbatical to pursue other projects, the group returned with another chart-topper, 10,000 Days, in 2006. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato, All Music Guide

My absolute favorite. Sonic, ethereal, spiritual, angry, loving, driving and forceful.

Oh yeah. Lets turn our noses to this american garbage and prance on over to Eurometal land where we are oh so civilized. We are so civilized that when we mass murder people we just oh so gently and civil like offer them a gas shower or a 250 degree sauna oven resting area.
Whats your problem with American TOOL?? |
I don't know who can top Tool when it comes to their style. I find it hard to listen to other bands. Oh lateralus is their best yet
@ Spookiness, some do, but they don't bother posting much anymore. Most civil conversation s I find are on European metal band pages.
I love tool, they rock, period, iv'e seen them twice, and both times, adam looked directly into my eyes for at least four seconds. Do sell outs stare into the souls of their biggest fans? i think not, end of story
Tool is okay, I mean they are great at what they do, great live shows and all, but goddamn, it is tired.
Lateralus is my favorite album. Very melodious indeed.
Sweet Jesus folks, does no one have a sense of humor or are remotely open-minded on Pandora?
Why so harsh to other people guys? Listen to some more Lateralus and gain back some positive human influence.

They are the last of the original bands...... Its a shame we only have cookie-cutte r pop a rap to listen to. I think I will put my hat on sideways and run my car into a wall. Tool rocks
matt you tard I use this as a stupid user id for pandora I am not obsessed or deluding my own identity by attaching myself to the band. and yes I am old enough to have been a fan since 96 so dont pretend to know anything about anyone who posts on this page. "I sold out long before you ever even knew my name"
WOW, these guys must be doing something right to get the repsonses from all of you leaving a comment! They rock and we all know it! Some of the most gifted musicians and they explore things we would probably not comprehend! And by the way MATT!, I am definitely "OGT"! It is not cause I am "obsessed", but because I am old enough to have been around when Opiate was released! Although I do love these Phuckin guys!

you see as a tool fan i enjoy the music brought to me in the way only this group can do. angel of anarchy{such a gay name probly some fat s**t that plays war craft all day) and hiding in green clouds are both ridulious. going by their studid a** names they enjoy disturbed and some other truly sold out bands. you say tool sold out and well ur so damn right. they sell stadiums in a minute because their music is so original people eat it up as much they can if anyone can find a band like them tell.
im not obsessed but i think there amazingly talented and i fefend the music i love :)
While i'm a big Tool fan myself, I still hate Tool fanboys claiming to be "OGT" and such. You are not cool for being so obsessed with a band that you delude yourself to beleive that you were "there since the begining" unless of course you actually were (which I seriously doubt.).

WTF I have my "Tool" station on for like 3 hours now and Pandora has not played one
FUC***G Tool song what a piece of S**T. They just tried playing Radiohead on my Tool station, Radiohead are you f***ing kidding me! Dammit they say they can only play a certain artist so many times every three hours how about at least playing them once. And Ive had Pandora for over a year now, Pandora go F@#$ yourself and your music genome project. OK IM done ranting now |
mr classic killer sweetie i know this because ive been smoking pot since i was 8 so......go f**k yourself and roll a joint and escape your sheltered little world
and i quote a famous quote from Bob Marley.... "When you smoke the herb it reveals you to yourself" _bob marley |

Tool is far and away the best at their style - unlike a lot of the copy cat sound alikes you hear on most rock/metal stations. Bottom line: Tool rules!
It is kinda creepy how some of you defend a band like a zealot. You don't know these people. You don't know who they really are yet you raise your blood pressure to "defend" them from faceless internet people. For all you know they could be closet homosexuals. I bet if they said they were gay like 70% of their fan base would be gone. Wrap your little brain around that one.
So for Mike Bauman and others like him who think that because Tool is dark and cool and a break away from the norm it must be underground. It's not. And who the hell said all mainstream was bad? Tool found their niche and kick a** so why do you try and make it not what it is. Its music. Its a form of leisure entertainmen t . These artists don't give a f**k about you or what you believe. They are livin the dream. Just say thanks for the song and shut your face.
TOOL IS A MAINSTREAM BAND. Take a breath you will be ok. They are on a mainstream record label which by definition makes them mainstream. All bands have stuff that they wont play on the radio. They can bleep the hell out of a song and still play it. They are doing this for MONEY. Nothing wrong with that. But to call Tool anything other then mainstream Is just you trying to protect your idol from what you percieve as persicution. Now relax its O.K. The world did not end.
@Angel of Anarchy and others- hey tards, just because you sell out stadiums doesn't make you a sellout. How the f**k will a band last if it doesn't make money stupid!?!? if they don't get big, they don't make new albums. Do you want your favorite band to break up? NO? REALLY? Then let the music speak. Tool still puts out 8 minute songs that are unplayable on the radio despite the public demand for radio play. Thats the epitimy of NOT selling out, not conforming and doing what you want to do desp
Actually, I would say Pink Floyd would be that band you described Matt. I consider Tool to be the modern day version of that band.
we all know tool is the most creative metal/altern a t i v e bands ever formed. if not go bury your stupid little head in the sand and hold your breath...... . . j u s t do it!!!!!!!!
