Charlotte Martin
Biography
Singer/songwriter Charlotte Martin got her start singing opera while attending Eastern Illinois University in the late '90s. Her father was a respected professor in the music department, and naturally Martin followed his footsteps. She'd been playing piano since she was a little girl and her childhood was surrounded by music. While attending school, Martin experienced "real life," from living with her goth roommate and dealing with typical college-like drama to the tragic suicides of two close friends. Martin turned to music for solace. She desperately wanted to make music into a career; therefore, a whirlwind move to Los Angeles seemed like the right thing to do. Martin eventually made a record, One Girl Army, with producer Tom Rothrock (Badly Drawn Boy, Beck, Elliott Smith), but it was never released. Before 2002 came to a close, Martin got her own studio and recorded a new batch of songs with Ken Andrews (Air, Pete Yorn). The melodic dreamscapes of In Parentheses arrived in August 2003 and Martin's bright voice drew comparisons to Fiona Apple and Kate Bush. Dates with Howie Day and Damien Rice also coincided with the release of the EP. On Your Shore followed in 2004. Unfortunately, Martin's relationship with RCA proved creatively trying as the singer/songwriter continued writing and recording new material.
A decision to leave the major label in 2005 allowed Martin to accomplish her creative goals, thus reconnecting with Test-Drive Records to issue the Veins and Darkest Hour EPs before the year's end. Additional support dates around North American followed into the fall, and Martin rounded out the Veins tour with her first DVD recording, the limited-edition Something Like a DVD. She also married her long-time collaborator and co-producer, Ken Andrews (Pete Yorn, Year of the Rabbit, Failure), in the midst of recording her second album, Stromata. The album arrived on Martin and Andrews' own Dinosaur Fight label in September 2006. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

I'm just really not feeling this... her voice sounds pretty generic to me and doesn't seem particularly strong, and the music is a little too repetitive for my taste. I appreciate that she seems to like what she's doing, and I can see why she shows up on my Vienna Teng station, but it just feels like something's missing...

She reminds me of Tori, but I don't care. She's delicious! My favorite song?? Oh help. I have, and love LOVE, all of the Stromata album. Maybe "Reedemed"?? Or "Cut the Cord"? Also love "Haunted" from On Your Shore.

Oh a chick and a piano = Tori knockoff.... i s that the way your mind works you putz?? whatever In that case Tori ripped off Christina Mcvie. Soundgarden ripped off Elvis and Elvis ripped off some ancient tribe of bushmen in africa that crated the first guitar.
The piano work is very similar to some of Tori's stuff, and so are some of the vocal techniques.. . it's a style of music I like, pretty much irrespective of the particular artist.
She says she was influenced by Tori, but if you're heard all of her songs, you'll realize she's actually very original. Plus her voice is VERY different from Tori's.
I def like tory better but I do see, . . like a really soft version of Tori. Tiny little sections. Not nearly as raw
I don't see how can you say she sounds "nothing" like Tori. I get the impression that hearing others say so upsets you. I'm sorry if this is the case, but can you help me garner respect for your words? Explain your position please.

Okay, I just read all of the reviews on Charlotte. I saw alot of comparisons to Tori Amos. Tori is my favorite artist and has been for years but Tori only has so much to listen to and therefore, I have sought out "like" artists. Thanks to Pandora, we have Charlotte Martin and many others, who are "like" Tori. It's not fair to say that Charlotte sounds exactly like anyone but herself. Bands sound like other bands too . . . that's how it goes.
I know! I could have sworn "Everytime it Rains" was by Tori. Her voice is sooo similar.
I LOVELOVELOVE her!! I also thought it was a new Tori song and was not surprised when I saw Charlotte's name. I am new to Pandora and seems like every song that spikes my interest seems to coming from this lovely lady! I must get her albums and I would love to see her live!! AMAZING!
I thought this was Tori at first, awesome, thank you for introducing me to Charlotte :)
Wow...beauti f u l voice...musi c is so similar to Tori's, yet different.
Charlotte is one of my favorite artists. Her music is beautiful and creative. It's such a shame she's not well known.
wow, I ran to the computer because I thought this was a new Tori song. this chick is great!
Tori Amos being one of my all-time favorite artists, being EXTREMELY familiar w/ her differing music & vocal styles, and also having played the piano for 26 years myself, I can provide a good solid vote to the Tori Amos comparisons! When I first heard the song 'Drip', I first thought it WAS Tori, with a new song! By far not just due to Charlotte's piano playing ABILITY- her piano playing STYLE, lyrical style, & vocal style in that particular song are VERY similar to many of Tori's songs.
I've heard all of the different versions of Wild Horses through the years...This chick, by far, does the best cover of the song.
I like her alot. I like Everytime it Rains so I'm going to get her CDs. I never heard of her before now.
Who cares who she sounds like! She sounds GREAT to me!!!!! My favorite song she sings is "Wild Horses Couldn't Drag Me Away".
look people, just because she is female, and plays piano....she sounds NOTHING like tori amos. hell, she doesent sound like fionna, or regina, or kate, or anyone else....i would ALMOST say that she reminds me a little of aimee mann, but thats just an outward observation. please, allow yourselves to listen to a body of work BEFORE you try and draw comparisons. please. that being said, i like her quite a bit.....
I don't see the comparison to Tori Amos, other than she sings and plays the piano. So does Vanessa Carlton, and I wouldn't compare her with Tori Amos either. Apples and oranges. Charlotte Martin's voice doesn't have the same throaty, breathless take-no-crap attitude as Tori Amos. You can tell this woman has an opera background, her voice is clear and crisp...almo s t too perfect. I'm looking forward to hearing more from her.
She's awesome. I love her song Everytime it Rains. She's really pretty, too.
She only sounds like Tori because Tori is ALSO incredibly similar to Kate Bush. But she's got a far better voice than Tori.
She does indeed sound just like Tori. She still is awesome though. I'll be purchasing all of her CD's :O)
she sounds exactly like Tori Amos.... I would say it sounds like a direct rip off and dirivitive of many others as well.
I appreciate her talent. She runs circles around most in the way of voice and piano. However, whether or not it's purely coincidental or more purposeful- I can't help but to think: "Okay, this girl is totally trying to be like Tori Amos." I'm not bashing, it's just what I could not help thinking constantly when I listen to her music. Also, with the Wild Horses cover- Tori covers the Stones too. It's just all too ironic. But she is a fantastic musician for sure.
I still like Tori Amos and Missy Higgins more but this girl sounds pretty good.
her voice isn't identical to tori amos, but those backing vocals definetly are similar to stuff she does with backing vocals. I only listened to one song so far though. But I do like it, and i've heard other female artists who sound identical to tori amos, and i dont like those at all, so i dont think its exactly like tori amos. It's unique in it's own way.
I hear a lot of comparisons between Charlotte Martin and Tori Amos however I feel Char has really come into her own during the course of her career thus far. If I had to make a comparison to any other artist, I'd say Char is comparable to Kate Bush. In fact Char is a fan of Kate Bush and wrote her song "Limits of Our Love" to pay homage to Kate's "Cloudbustin g " . Plus, Char gives great hugs! Go see her live and get your hug.
Okay they compare to Fiona Apple, but her voice and music is almost identical to Tori Amos. This is her musical twin.
Charlotte Martin is the best! If you love Tori Amos, you should also love Charlotte Martin, Missy Higgins also rocks!
