Children Of Bodom
Biography
The black metal outfit Children of Bodom formed in Espoo, Finland in 1993; named in reference to one of the most notorious mass-murders in Scandinavian history, the group was originally founded by singer/guitarist Alexi Laiho and drummer Jaska Raatikainen, with subsequent roster additions including guitarist Alexander 'Ale' Kuoppala, bassist Henkka Blacksmith and keyboardist Janne Wirman. Children of Bodom's debut LP, Something Wild, was released in the U.S. in 1998; Hatebreeder followed a year later and Follow the Reaper appeared in early 2001. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

I don't think CoB ever had the intention of making their music "decent". LOL.
Keyboards=WI N , though. |
I agree with Fangirl on this one, the keyboards really add to Bodom's awesome sound.
if the guitars aren't too melodic, I find that keyboards really help, even if it's not much.
CofB has both (from what I've heard). :) |
i love how these people think they can make their music decent by flooding it with keyboard
Especially home-made Italian food. None of this store bought crap!
I agree with LLM.
Italian food=Instant WIN |
LOL! Italian food is amazing! Too much Italian food=impossi b l e .
LOL!
for me, it's chocolate and music. |
The exception to that rule is Italian food.
LOL. |
lol, good point. if a fan called CofB that to someone who wants to listen to the band, he/she would be so confused, they'd turn away. lol
too much of anything kills. lol |
@Fangirl: Well, sort-of. I'll go as far as to classify something as blackened thrash, but not further, and I only go that far because bands like Immortal and Dragonlord sound nothing like Limbonic Art or Sirius.
Some people just go overboard. Like someone determined to completely nail CoB's genre might go so far as to categorize them as 'neo-classic a l empowered melodic death metal'. Which, yes, it might be true, but seriously, nobody wants to hear you call something that. |
man, I'm enjoying this band more and more...
oh, ok, thanks for the clear up, civildragon. :)
lol, Plague, over-classif y i n g is what anyone who is bored would do. well, those that care too much at least. what should be more important is if you like a band or not. and the picky people can then go to their categorizing thing. while the rest just sit back and enjoy music. |
@LLM: It was on the Facebook group "United Federation of Symphonic Metal Fans". We were discussing Dragonlord and whether it should be classified along with the rest of the sympho-black metal bands. It kind of just ended up going into a hair-splitti n g contest. I guess it's what happens when bored metalheads have nothing better to do.
I was talking about the description that Jason gave us. It was not directed at you Melanie.
It's understandab l e up to a point. Some people literally over-classif y though. I got in a debate with a guy over the difference between blackened thrash metal vs. black/thrash metal. Lets face it, they're both the exact same thing.
But CoB really isn't black metal. |
lol I love how people debate what box to fit every metal band under the sun. I too find it fun at times but it really is so lame
Plague and his being ever-informa t i v e . . . lol
I'm not trying to be mean. you're awesome. :) |
I don't think they were ever black metal. Their early stuff was just neo-classica l with black metal inspired vocals, but as a whole, it wasn't black metal. Always good stuff though.

HELP ME FIND OUT THE SCARIEST MOVIE EVER MADE..VISIT MY PAGE AND TELL ME WHAT MOVIE YOU THINK IS THE SCARIEST MOVIE YOU EVER SAW. THANKS

Well Children of Bodom used to be black power metal in their albums hatebreeder and something wild, but now they have a more melodic death metal sound. Overall they were melodic death metal, but back then they did have a bit of black power metal. They aren't really satanic though. CoB is my personal favorite band, Janne Warman is an amazing keyboardist and Alexi Laiho is one of the best guitarists out there now. This band is just completely original and has an awesome sound. CoB for the win!
@LLM: No, I totally see where you're coming from with the ideology and negativity that is attached to black metal. It's one of a very few genres of music that is attached to ideology, so I can totally see how incorrectly labelling a band could affect someone's perception of it. As someone who doesn't subscribe to the Satanism and evilness and crap attached to BM, I actually prefer the vocal delivery to be totally incomprehens i b l e . I'm not offended if I didn't hear 'em bashing my beliefs. XD
I didn't say Children of Bodom was death metal, civildragon. I was talking about something different.
Why are they called black metal? I listen to Behemoth, Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth, Dimmu Borgir, and DragonLord, and these guys don't really sound like any of them (except maybe a little DragonLord and later Behemoth stuff). They remind me more of In Flames and Soilwork (who are melodic death metal bands).
nothing against death metal of course, but it didn't belong on my one station...
it had to have been on one of my HIM (which got me freaking death metal for some dumb reason...) or gothic/symph o n i c metal stations... I can't remember where! it was months ago and that was when I couldn't tolerate vocals like this band has. ^_^'
@Fangirl: Look harder. I have the Blooddrunk album and everything on it is good.
@Plague: I brought up the negative connotations of black metal because it's what I'm used to hearing from that genre. I agree that it's not representati v e of Bodom's style, but I despise Gorgoroth and others like them because they make it so that you can't understand anything. Now I know that there's some good black metal out there like the stuff you have on your black metal station but it's not what I'm used to. |
I'm looking through my stations and I cannot find the song I thumbed down! I remember it was off of Blooddrunk... I think since it was bloody...
that's why I find it funny, Plague. I'm not usually into screamy, harsh vocals the majority of the time in music. I guess I need to thank my Poisonblack radio that got me to In Flames and now here... lol |
@LLM: Interesting that you bring up black metal's negative connotations . It never even occured to me, as a fan of black metal. It always just mildly irritated me because it wasn't representati v e of their style.
@Fangirl: I suspect they recieved the thumbs down for the vocals? If I recall correctly, not too long ago you weren't so hot for harsh vocals. @Kaiton: That sucks. |
I remember a while ago I thumbed down a song by them...
... now I wonder why I did that. these guys are pretty good! |
WOW, good shephard, take it easy. we're all here to listen to metal... not to talk sh** to people.
