Clutch
Biography
Clutch combined elements of funk, Led Zeppelin, and metal with vocals inspired by Faith No More. Formed in 1991 in Germantown, MD, the group included Neil Fallon (vocals), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass), and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). They built a local following through constant gigging, and after just one 7" single (the classic Earache release "Passive Restraints") Clutch was signed by EastWest Records. Their debut LP, Transnational Speedway League, followed in 1993. A self-titled album appeared two years later and afforded Clutch some mainstream exposure. They jumped to the larger Columbia label for 1998's Elephant Riders, and many thought the group might join their sonic cousins Korn and Deftones in the alternative metal winner's circle. That didn't quite happen. But it didn't matter, because a quality fan base continued to thrive for Clutch. Pure Rock Fury appeared in 2001, and the similarly uncompromising Blast Tyrant came three years later as their first for DRT Records. Their seventh full-length, Robot Hive/Exodus, followed in 2005 and featured the first lineup change since the early '90s, the addition of organist Mick Schauer. Among Clutch's numerous side releases were a groove-based album (2000's Jam Room), as well as Live at the Googolplex and the rarities record Slow Hole to China, both issued in 2003.
Also issued in 2005, Pitchfork & Lost Needles combined Clutch's 1991 Pitchfork 7" with unreleased demos and early tracks. In the fall of 2006, the band hit the studio with producer Joe Barresi (Kyuss, Melvins) to record their next album; the resulting From Beale Street to Oblivion appeared in March 2007. In 2008, the band released a CD/DVD compilation of live tracks from shows in New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and Sydney titled Full Fathom Five: Audio Field Recordings 2007-2008 on their own label, Weathermaker Music. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

I agree. The people that write these biographies obviously were either too young to actually experience when a lot of these bands came around for the first time, or are just comparing this stuff to newer stuff that they know rather than looking into these bands and becoming more well rounded listeners. The bios here are usually complete crap. For instance I noticed that one of the writers seems to compare every band he writes about to Korn. Even bands that were out several decades before. Korn w

Who the hell writes these biographies. They are so incorrect and inaccurate it isn't funny. I like Clutch, but I think Clutch cares more about their brand than they do the music. I understand the thematics of what they are trying to say and do as a band.

In my opinion, clutch and fireball ministry are the two greatest bands.
ANd they were on UVTV |

just found these guys thanks to pandora - really dug the selection I got - going to try and get them heavier into my rotation.;) Reminds me a bit of Corrosion of Conformity (whom I absolutely love).
Definitely not vocals inspired by Faith No More. Both are great bands though.
Clutch puts on an AWESOME live show... I've followed them since '93. They just get better and better as time goes on.
I just discovered Clutch. Where the hell have I been?!? This band rules.
Clutch is hands down one of the greatest bands ever. They occupy that small group of bands that transition well from album to live. I have seen them over 8 times, and each show is better than the last.
So, how's the new album? Have they continued their blues progression?
I'm a big fan. It's a strangely awesome mix of groove, blues, and rock/metal. Great stuff. I'm sure they aren't for everyone but they are definately for me. Favortite song: "10,000 Witnesses"

Come on. Clutch is a good good band. Not the best, not the worst. They hold up well and they really remind me of The Henry Rollins band.
saw them live a few days ago in San Franciso with a San Jose meth crownd from San Jose. Are they a biker band ? RHCP with integrity ? Blues/Metal anyone ? Anyways, they are very talented , professional muscians and played a song from their new album Abraham Lincoln that was tremondous.B a r o n e s s , a n artsy/fartsy metal band played just before they did and they are more my cup of tea,but this was a Clutch crowd. A friend asked me to go five hours before the show and I never heard of them,or heard them

I take it back - Saying "sold out" is a joke - I would love to sell out - On my terms only - If you can make a living playing the way you want without having to make yourself look silly.....No t h i n g more needs to be said.
I take it back, these guys suck!!!! I know everything about music and let me tell ya these guys suck!!
Im officially a Clutch fan now......bee n a while comin I guess.
These "Similar Artists" Pandora has seem a bit poorly thought out though. Then again this band is very, very hard to categorize.. . . . |
Just saw them in Chicago. Even better in person and they also just came out with a new CD Strange Cousins From the West. Check it out you wont be disappointed !
mdcairns- well put, and your so right. this band doesnt sell out and plays only for themselves.. . . h o n e s t l y though there are ALOT of bands that do that, Clutch has gotten some well deserved attention where others that have never compromised or "sold out" have not. Good for them though. Anything to raise a big middle finger salute to "corporate,T r e n d y , plastic, commercializ e d music" is good in my book!
the coolest band i know of. clutch is what god listens to when he/she wants toparty!!!!! !
If you are a musician - These guys are ETERNAL - They are without a shadow of a doubt possibly the best band ever. They have not compromised EVER. They play for the music, Not for popularity. They are not followers of a trend, They don't have a ridiculous cartoon Metal/Death/ B l a c k / S c r e a m o / E m o / P o l i t i c o . . . w h a t e v e r image. Don't play to be looked at, Play to be Heard....Pla y to Rock!
You guys know what is up!! These guys make sure that I'm not such a nerd! 10001110101 a periadic table with a centerpiece of mind.

I know what you mean Baron. I love Death Metal or Grindcore just as much as I love Classic rock or Funk, and I love Clutch.
WOW.
Some pretty intensse opinions on this band. I guess I havent ever really "got it" when it comes to Clutch. I am metal head though, I like a little more aggression and dark metal fury.....if ya know what I mean. But they aint bad for sure. |
I completely disagree with the comment that clutches lyrical fare is superficial. Neil is the Master of the metaphor a chaw chewin' troubador. And it should be analyzed because alot of it forcasts thigs to come that for some reason Neil has "seen in dreams". It you take it at face value and just appreciate the musicality, your subconscious will still be innandated with the truth. Clutch shows are an experience far beyond entertainmen t especailly for those who "get it". so carry on
I love Clutch,
Just to let you know, it seems to me that Blast Tyrant is related to thoughts on the Bush admin |
I was bike riding thru WV/VA/ MD- Harpers Ferry area- and saw lots of stuff referenced by THE BAND. Saw a Bakerton Rd...guess that would be where they were staying during the making of ER.
They're a great band, but you guys over analyze them, there's nothing really to get with them. Their lyrics don't mean anything, so all of you who say you get what you're saying, go ahead and strap on your helmets.
