Coal Chamber
Biography
Coal Chamber broke out of the Los Angeles alternative metal scene in 1997 with a sound often compared to Korn, although both bands formed around the same time and are quality representations of the scene's overall sound -- the heavy, detuned guitars of the murkiest Black Sabbath, grungy, noisy textures reminiscent of White Zombie or Tool, the white-knuckle intensity of Pantera and hardcore punk, and perhaps a few hip-hop-influenced beats รก la Biohazard. Coal Chamber was formed in 1994 by vocalist/lyricist B. Dez Fafara and guitarist Miguel "Meegs" Rascon, who met through a classified ad; the two added drummer Mike "Mikee" Cox and bassist Rayna Foss, the latter of whom heard about auditions through her roommate, Fafara's future wife. A huge local buzz following gigs at the Roxy and the Whisky A-Go-Go, along with a demo tape championed by Fear Factory's Dino Cazares, got the band an opportunity to sign with Roadrunner Records late in 1994, but Fafara suddenly quit due to disagreements with his wife over the band. By the spring of 1995, Fafara changed his mind and returned, a decision that ultimately cost him his marriage, but a renewed sense of energy helped Coal Chamber regain their Roadrunner deal by the end of the year. Their self-titled debut was released in 1997; Chamber Music followed two years later. The album was a minor success but its mixture of goth rock imagery and nu metal thuggery made for an uneven album. They toured heavily behind it but by the time it came time to record the next album, bassist Rayna Foss-Rose was gone to raise her daughter, leaving the band with Nadja Peulen. Nadja took Foss-Rose's place during her pregnancy between the first two albums, but she accepted the invitation to come back as a full time member during the recording of the next record. The resulting album, Dark Days, was released in the spring of 2002. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

To me Loco sounds like a watered down version of Devil's Son... But anyways DevilDriver kicks more a** than Coal Chamber. But Coal Chamber's still cool
I'd like to hear Devildriver do a cover of any Coal Chamber songs especially Sway, Loco, Big Truck, etc.
Coal Chamber's pretty cool, but they had a really limited musical range. Its all bass heavy, punk metal. Dez Fafara is what Satan sounds like, and he made the right move with Devil D.
Similar artists to Coal Chamber: Static-X, Korn, Mudvayne, System of a Down, Slipknot Similar to Devildriver: Droid, Throwdown, In Flames, As I Lay Dying, and Lamb of God Not to take anything away from those top bands, but Devildriver has really joined American metal's elite, something Coal Chamber couldn't do. |
they should get back together! devildriver is cool but coal chamber was awesome
ME LOCO!!!!! Bad *ss song! Still like to hear it. Devildriver owns
christopher that was awesome. The lead singer freaks me out but I do like their sound.

I think the guy sounds like Wayne Static, but thats just me. The constipation sound...

I love coal chamber and devildriver. they are very different but both very good. guess i have more an open mind than some of you dumb f**ks on here
coal chamber is awesome. and devildriver sucks. except for devil's son
no chamber music? wtf i wish coal chamber was still around, although i am very satisfied with devildriver, coal chamber was awesome
Coal Chamber are cool / I like Loco alot, and the ice cream truck driver cover is right on, and Dez went on to much more aggressive things in Devildriver, which I think are better, depends on taste, but both are fine. Dez has alot of talent.

I enjoy passionate singing above all else. Screamers have a tendency to bother me a bit, but I like Static-X because it was the first band I ever listened to in the genre. Time has a way of bypassing all grudges.
I was mistaken. It appears only that song Loco reminds me of Wayne. You are right. The singer of Coal Chambers has a much deeper voice. |
hehe... That's a funny story about the Static X thing. Now that i think about it... The singer for CC does sound a little like Wayne. But it sounds like CC's singer has, kind of, a lower voice then Waynes'.
although... I do like the vocalists that scream. but it's finy if you don't. :) |
The singers voice reminded me of Wayne Static. Hell, the song Loco from Coal Chamber popped up and my first thought was, "Holy s**t! Static-X has a new CD already?!"
I am going to look into them now--I love Wayne Static's grungy voice. Far better than all those other "screamers." |
