Counting Crows
Biography
With their angst-filled hybrid of Van Morrison, the Band, and R.E.M., Counting Crows became an overnight sensation in 1994. Only a year earlier, the band was a group of unknown musicians, filling in for the absent Van Morrison at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony; they were introduced by an enthusiastic Robbie Robertson. Early in 1993, the band recorded their debut album, August and Everything After, with T-Bone Burnett. Released the fall, it was a dark and somber record, driven by the morose lyrics and expressive vocals of Adam Duritz. The only up-tempo song, "Mr. Jones," became their ticket to stardom, and Counting Crows enjoyed a significant amount of success throughout the '90s and beyond.
What made Counting Crows unique was how they were able to balance Duritz's tortured lyrics with the sound of the late '60s and early '70s; it made them one of the few alternative bands to appeal to listeners who thought that rock & roll died in 1972. Recovering the Satellites followed in 1996, and "A Long December" was a Top 10 hit on both the Modern Rock and Adult Top 40 charts. The band issued the two-disc Across a Wire: Live in New York in 1998, and the following year saw the release of Counting Crows' third studio album, This Desert Life. In the midst of recording and collaborating with Ryan Adams on his sophomore album, Gold, Duritz joined his band in the studio as well. The fruit of those sessions was the Steve Lillywhite-produced fourth album, Hard Candy. The next year saw the release of the best-of Films About Ghosts, and in 2004 Counting Crows reminded fans of their ability to write a hit single with "Accidentally in Love," which appeared on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. Two years later, New Amsterdam: Live at Heineken Music Hall, recorded from a show on February 6, 2003, was made available to the public. Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings appeared in 2008. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
Ben Harper and Counting Crows have a lot in common, including Jim Bogios (the drummer) who appears on several of Ben's albums. Plus, they have both worked with David Lowery. On top of that, they both play country rock influenced music with lots of harmonies.

Counting Crows came from CA. Berkeley. I know some of the band and they all are CA boys.

Counting Crows "Bubble gum" Really? Have you listened to their latest record? Its somewhat brutal, loud and then acoustic and heartbreakin g . You might want to give it a try.
I like there song Accidinally in love........ I t ' s from the movie Shrek2.
When they opened for the Stones, I was blown away. From small bands to big acts, everyone identified.
Wow! Many years of careful deliberation . Dude are you serious. And who is Mary Black?
Oh, quit all the crying! Every good band has a couple of crappy songs. Counting Crows are the s**t, all those 90s bands like Counting Crows, The Spin Doctors, The Wallflowers, Gin Blossoms, etc hit a "happy nerve" in anyone born after 1950 who appreciates music. So what if they sold out, or didn't sell out and just wrote a couple bad songs. You don't have to hate them for it.
After many years of careful deliberation I've decided I am no longer a fan of Counting Crows. In their prime they had some hits, but they've become so bubble gum I cringe every time I hear them. Pandora, this is not your fault. I do not blame you.
That's not the Mary Black I know. Go somewhere else (even though the music is good in its time and place). Can't we really choose, Pandora? (None of that stuff about how musically similar they are. They are not!)....but thanks for throwing at least a little Mary Black in on the Mary Black channel! I know she shows up unexpectedly just the other way around. Guess it all balances out (hopefully), though too much rock on Mary Black. Enough! I even like counting crows casting off.

bntn40... bite your tongue! Counting Crows are amazing, and very much a part of me and my story also... I hear ya caaronmd... they were with me all through college and their music still reminds me of that time in my life! I just cant get enough of them! Ditto on the desert island statement. Funny how music plays such a big part in our memories... guess its just how God created us!

this was a really influential band on me during the nineties, when I was a surgical resident, and my dark mood matched the lyrics perfectly. Plus I have had the exact same relationship detailed in "Anna Begins". It is impossible to separate the personal from opinions about music, but 'August' is one of those discs I would take to the proverbial desert island and one I never tire of recommending
what the hell! this band has nuthin in common with ben harper. stay the hell off my station counting crows sucks!!!
AMAZING band. Saved me so many times and I never get tired listening to their songs...thei r lyrics are pure poetry. New stuff, I'm not digging as much but August and Everything After is probably one of their best cds.
I agree with RamPaige best band to listen to on road trips. I wish more people my age would actually listen to them instead of this horrible new-age rap crap and club songs. I LOVE COUNTING CROWS |
Ok I like Counting Crows. But saw them many years ago in Detroit and Adam was so drunk he was falling all over the stage. I was SO disappointed .
We also had old people yelling at us to sit down. It was so stupid. I'm older now but still - you go to a concert to have fun! I dont need to see a wasted singer or sit politely. |
LOVE the band- saw them in Berkeley a few years back w/LIVE- was gettin' in to it & dancin' & the people around me told me to SIT DOWN!- what is the point of going to a live concert if you can't dance!!- so I haven't been to one of their concerts since- fans are a bunch of OLD FOGIES!!!!

Too bad 'Colorblind' off of This Desert life came out before Lifehouse. This band has never sounded like any other band. They have been geniune since the very start. I have to say though, I have not been happy with their new stuff as much.
Love, love, love this band! I am super excited to see them in St. Louis in a couple of weeks. Listening to the Counting Crows always makes me happy! :)
parts of 'colorblind' sound too much like 'everything' by Lifehouse. not very good at all. blech
Have been loving these guys since 93' and have only seen them 2 times...seem s they are rarely on the East coast. Was in Berkeley last month, but they weren't. But this summer we have Boston and Mohegan Sun! Already booked the room, now waiting for the tickets!

This is my favorite song from August And Everything After. A couple of years after I heard Omaha, I went there. It's the heart that matters more........
Please don't ever listen to anything other than August and Recovering. The rest are garbage.
