Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Biography
The musical partnership of David Crosby (born August 14, 1941), Stephen Stills (born January 3, 1945), and Graham Nash (born February 2, 1942), with and without Neil Young (born November 12, 1945), was not only one of the most successful touring and recording acts of the late '60s, '70s, and early '80s -- with the colorful, contrasting nature of the members' characters and their connection to the political and cultural upheavals of the time -- it was the only American-based band to approach the overall societal impact of the Beatles. The group was a second marriage for all the participants when it came together in 1968: Crosby had been a member of the Byrds, Nash was in the Hollies, and Stills had been part of Buffalo Springfield. The resulting trio, however, sounded like none of its predecessors and was characterized by a unique vocal blend and a musical approach that ranged from acoustic folk to melodic pop to hard rock. CSN's debut album, released in 1969, was perfectly in tune with the times, and the group was an instant hit. By the time of their first tour (which included the Woodstock festival), they had added Young, also a veteran of Buffalo Springfield, who maintained a solo career.
The first CSNY album, Déjà Vu, was a chart-topping hit in 1970, but the group split acrimoniously after a summer tour. Four Way Street, a live double album issued after the breakup, was another number one hit. (When it was finally released on CD in 1992, it was lengthened with more live material.) In 1974, CSNY reformed for a summer stadium tour without releasing a new record. Nevertheless, the compilation So Far became their third straight number one. Crosby, Stills & Nash re-formed without Young in 1977 for the album CSN, another giant hit. They followed with Daylight Again in 1982, but by then Crosby was in the throes of drug addiction and increasing legal problems. He was in jail in 1985-1986, but cleaned up and returned to action, with the result that CSNY reunited for only their second studio album, American Dream, in 1988. CSN followed with Live It Up in 1990, and though that album was a commercial disappointment, the trio remained a popular live act; it embarked on a 25th anniversary tour in the summer of 1994 and released a new album, After the Storm. The trio again reunited with Young for 1999's Looking Forward, followed in 2000 by their CSNY2K tour. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Much, much more should be said about this band. They deserve it. Joni Mitchell. American Folk going mainstream. Their unique harmonies. Poetry. The shadows these guys cast is colossal.

okay...bough t deja vu in 1970. The were the top. What a poor review. I never thought otherwise. Stills was the Brain, Nash the Heart, Young the Soul, and Crosby...wel l . . . according to Mellisa...he was the balls. Think on it. What a life they had and have.

Just saw them in Sta. Barbara (10/01/09). They were never my favorite band, but took my wife and her girlfriend. The show was stunning. 40 yrs and still running strong. Did a version of "Uncle John's Band" that brought tears to the eyes of this old Deadhead...

a Leo, Capricorn, Aquarius and Scorpio (fire, earth, air and water!) loved 'em since the 9th grade 1971! because they knew what was up way ahead of their time. Heard Neil young's Ohio today, gave me chills, it's happening in Iran.. This summer I hear the drumming, Four dead in Ohio. Gotta get down to it Soldiers are cutting us down. What if you knew her And found her dead on the ground How can you run when you know?

Nothing better than sailing around Tobago, listening to and looking at (the) Southern Cross. It makes one wish the voyage would never end. If only Mark Twain wrote a song "Traveling around the Equator"...b u t at least there is Buffett's "Remission Man" to capture a bit of that book. (Less I sound like a sailing snob, it can be done without help (with training) and for less than staying on land! See that Cross! And hear music of the sea. (too many people and lights to the North. Blessings...

CSN will rock my world forever!!!!! Their songs move me and I always feel soooo free when I listen to them.
The absolute best harmony group ever. I have always preferred the CSN lineup - young was always sort of superfluous for me (hey- it takes all kinds!!) My favorites are Southern Cross & Delta... why don't we hear those on Pandora??

I saw both the CSN&Y and CS&N versions (Cleveland 1974 and Pine Knob 1977, respectively - a long time ago) as well as C&N in 1976 at PK. So all of these shows were shortly after the so-called golden years of the band but they were awesome!
The Cleveland show opened with Stills doing "Love the One You're With" and had a tremendous energy from the opening strum. The Detroit (Clarkston) shows were more laid-back, but still reached out and touched. BTW-Meadowbr o o k has no "e" and is in Rochester, MI |
this one of the most talented groups ever assembled hands down
CROSBY,STILL S & NASH PERFORMED SOME GREAT SONGS,SOME WERE CLINKERS FOR ME BUT MOST ALL WERE VERY GOOD...
I saw CS&N at Meadowbrooke Theater in Auburn Hills MI (outdoors) this past summer. One of the best concerts I've seen in years. And we go to many concerts. I like all of their music with our without Young.

Matthew,
Not really 'dreaded'... the man has contributed much (it's just his politics which might be considered skewered, not his music). But in all honesty, he wasn't really needed in this group, and his lack of strong contribution is quite evident. Even he realized his star would never shine brightly and he quickly departed to shine on his own. |

"WITHOUT THE DREADED Y" Are you kidding me! How can you consider Neil Young "Dreaded".Ki n d of like saying the first Beatle album (without the dreaded J).Too bad I missed you at Woodstock..b u m m e r
The first CSN (without the dreaded Y) album is, for me, the single best album that came out of that period; smooth-as-si l k harmonies, sweetly exotic lyrics (Lady of the Island is still the absolute sexiest song ever recorded... still takes my breath away). Their version of Wooden Ships just points out how tragically beautiful the song is. My only regret is that I missed them when I was at Woodstock... s i g h .

Saw them two years ago live for the first time. It took a couple of songs for them to get it together but after that.. pure magic
CSNY has been one of my all-time favorites for a long time. Unbelievable that this group with or without Neil Young still can pull off the same wonderful harmonies when performing live as they did in their younger days. CSN is still a must-watch group when they perform anywhere near your hometown!

Three very talented artists.
Now... look at the group's picture above and compare it to their name. What's wrong? LOL Yep, bingo. |

Listening to their music, their stories and messages, is like a journey in time. To a place I sometimes yearn for, lots of great memories, a world away from now!
