Manowar
Biography
Manowar was formed by ex-Dictators and Shakin' Street guitarist Ross the Boss. The original lineup included vocalist Eric Adams, bassist Joey DeMaio, and drummer Donnie Hamzik. The group's kitschy approach was designed to be the raw, primal, macho antithesis of classic rock. Their music was based on raw, aggressive riffs, and their lyrics were mostly about fighting, violence, and death. The group dressed in animal skins in concert to underline the point. Their first album featured a solo bass arrangement of the "William Tell Overture," and the press branded the group as a joke. The band tried to become even more extreme with each album and usually ended up dropped from their labels. They tried to take a more commercial direction in the late '80s, but this approach failed too, and Ross the Boss quit in disgust in 1988; undeterred, Manowar continued recording into the next decade, issuing records including 1992's Triumph of Steel, 1994's Hell of Steel, and 1996's Louder Than Hell. With each release and subsequent tour, Manowar began to build a devoted fan base, especially in Europe, where the group regularly sold out stadiums. A flurry of live DVDs followed, each boasting hours of music, interviews, and Viking machismo. The band returned to the studio in 2002 for Warriors of the World, followed by the Sons of Odin EP in 2006 and Gods of War in 2007. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

I think it's hilarious how these guys are mentioned in so many other metal bands' pages. (usually with the connotations of cheesy and silly)
And they ARE really cheesy, and can get pretty silly (Metal that's REAL!) but it's f**king awesome anyway. |

There's something wonderful about a metal band that sings mostly about how great metal is. I happen to agree with them. Love it or leave it.
Okay, forgot about The Fight for Freedom. So, maybe they aren't a one hit wonder - but they still have a lot of crappy music that makes it easy to overlook their good stuff. Too much freaking fillers.
Excalibur, Warriors of the World United, and Fight Until We Die, are the ONLY good songs by Manowar. I'm sorry to say this, but they are nothing more than a one hit wonder that got lucky and ACCIDENTALLY wrote a couple of good songs. Even so, along with Iron Maiden - they are essentially the forefathers of power metal. So I salute them for that accomplishme n t . \m/

I love Manowar, very good band.
Manowar is one of those bands that you either like them for what they are, or hate them for what they are. Either way, you can't deny that they ARE manlier than you. |
They are warriors of metal. Nothing but the best later with the rest.
a name like "SportsProph e t " is the cheeziest thing ive ever heard. you dont like it, get out of here before i rape you.
ABSOLUTELY THE FRIKKEN CHEEZIEST METAL I'VE EVER HEARD...ADEQ U A T E AT BEST.
man o war is the s**t and will sty that way for a loing time
and if you dont thenk so then bring it on you will lose |
Really wish they had Battle Hymns, Louder Than Hell, and Triumph of Steel on here - kickass albums.
...like every other Manowar album. @trydzon138: HAIL! |
Man, I thought I was one of the few who still occasionally rocked out with some Man O War, but look at all of the proud Brothers of Metal!!! "If you are not into metal, than you can leave the hall!" Hell ya!!!!
Manowar just rocks. Into Glory Ride is still hard to come by in metal today. Songs like Metal Daze and Hatred are just blazing. Hail to England is an incredible album. Ross the Boss was and still is a lethal guitarist, the new guy seems to shred incredibly as well. Look for an album "Battle Hymns". It will change your take on powerful lyrics, Eric's voice is stronger than a Valkries, Ross's guitars on this is blistering and Joey on the bass, f$*k.

"The RULER OF HELL, A GIANT IS HE!"
Incredibly badass, and great to listen to. |

I agree with D. Mattingly, Manowar is very under appreciated and it's sad. 80% of the arguments saying that Manowar sucks is based on the fact that they used to wear animal skins, who really gives a s**t?
Manowar is a great metal band that sticks to an old Black Sabbath style and also has the flexibility to succeed with concept albums like Gods of War. Hail and Kill!! |
Manowar is one of my favorite bands ever. "Sons of Odin" got me into metal, and it's still a kick a** song.
But that said, to echo an earlier comment, they have REALLY good songs..... and then really bad ones too. Doesn't make me like them any less though. |

In 1988, my friends and I used to leave school grounds to get lunch at the local pizza place. It was a guarantee that this one local college radio station (89.5 FM - WSOU in Northern NJ) would play at least one song from Slayer, Metallica, Man-O-War, Megadeth and Motorhead on the drive there and back. Today, no such luck.

A very under appreciated band. They are much better musically then they are given credit for, other than Louder than Hell most of their albums have been really good. The last two albums I thought were pretty strong but I think they might have peaked musically on the Triump of Steel. Still, if you like metal you can not go wrong with Manowar. Great Band.

have not heard these guys on the radio since I lived in Jersey and that was over fifteen years ago thanks

Hey, they wouldn't still be selling out arenas and selling albums if there wasn't something substantial about the music/band/i m a g e . Are they comparable to AOR material? No. However, they've got a niche, and they own that space. And yes, Hatred is one of their best compositions .
I have to disagree with Ben Tish. The pre-Louder than Hell stuff is the better.
everyone needs a little MANOWAR, now and then. with heart filled "Hatred", one of my fave Manowar songs.

Hail brothers of metal :) I am glad, I am not the only person listening to them in the USA :P I just wished they came here for concert in Indiana.
