Damien Rice
Biography
Irish singer/songwriter Damien Rice launched his music career in the late-'90s with the hard-hitting indie rock outfit Juniper. The group signed to Polygram in 1997 and released two singles, "The World Is Dead" and "Weathermen," which did moderately well on Irish radio, but when it came time to record a full-length album, contractual rules from the label prevented Juniper from doing so, and Rice split. After a brief respite in Europe, Rice returned to Dublin to focus on music once again, scrounging up enough money to record a demo. He sent it to producer/film composer David Arnold (Björk, Nina Persson, Paul Oakenfold), and luckily for him, Arnold loved it and set Rice up in his very own mobile studio to make a record. His first single, "The Blower's Daughter," was an instant Top 20 hit when it appeared in fall 2001. Shared gigs with McAlmont & Butler and folkie Kathryn Williams followed in summer 2002 when Rice released O in the U.K. The album hit the States in 2003, which earned the Irishman a dedicated group of American fans in addition to his European ones, and after satiating all of them with a collection of B-sides in 2005, Rice released his sophomore record, 9. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Damien's music is very moving and emotionally charged. I absolutely love B-Sides. I know that Damien's music is aimed at middle-aged adults, but I've been listening to his music since I was 13. Now 18, I'm still lovin' his music.

What's up with bashing 'Closer' and Natalie Portman? I loved Damien Rice way before that movie came out (which DID NOT suck) and I still do, the song being in the movie shouldn't change anything.

"Older chests reveal themselves like a crack in the wall, starting small... growing time." That line poetically sums up our lives, growing old, and how we/everyone deal with it. Simply fantastic...

Lets not criticize eachother. Instead lets talk about what an amazing artist Damien Rice is! It IS kinda selfish to want an artist all to yourself, but isn't that how we all secretly feel? He sings with so much passion it's as though he's singing it just for you. Of course, thats not reality but its nice to think of it that way. And don't you think thats when you know an artist is great? When you want everyone to be exposed to his musical talent but at the same time you don't want to share? <3

who knew saying "f**k you" in a song would sound so incredibly poetic. he is musical genius.
That's just how i enjoy music..it's more personal when people with dumb names like drummerlady4 j e s u s don't think it's an amazing song because it was played in some feature film staring natalie portman to help portray an emotional part of the movie. But that's juts me.. and it's not your problem. =)

I think it's more the fact that they don't recieve scene points for knowing his music anymore and that makes them bitter.

Kr7stle and ashleyjdavid s o n really you guys need to grow up and get over yourselves. Damien is one of the most honest musicians around and he writes some of the most powerful and beautiful lyrics that have helped me and many other people through some very rough and not so rough times and the fact that you want to deprive some people who real need his music because you some how feel even though you've never met him(as in more than googly eyed saying hi at a show) that you know him is selfish and

Great point bgrove83. I'm pretty sure Damien spent all his time writing music just so kr7stle and ashleyjdavid s o n and only them can listen to the music. I think the movie Closer is only appreciated by less immature and experienced people. The movie introduced DR to a lot of "dumb people" who are now true unselfish fans. Oh do you hate Natalie Portman because she's smart and talented???
So you guys feel that less exposure is good for an artist you enjoy? Sounds a bit selfish eh?
kr7stle- i agree about using his music in a movie- I like having music kind of "to myself" and when it's in a movie all kinds of dumb people discover it and it's ruined.
Beautiful music. i liked him before the movie closer came out...I really wish they hadn't used his music in that movie.
love his music, though sometimes too much of it, I find, is depressing. I agree; Blower's Daughter is a favorite of mine too. Also, his cover of Creep by radiohead is the best I've heard
Sad that Lisa Hannigan no longer sings with him. They have such pretty harmony.
i love his music so much. the blower's daughter is simoly beautiful. i want the tabs!!!
An Amazing talent, his voice could get to a point of being grating but he always pulls back showing good control over his voice limitations. His Lyrics however surpass many modern day artists and it's what keeps me coming back.
Loved "O". Then, "Blower's Daughter" was used for that piece of crap movie Closer. Ugh. A few years have passed, and I still wish he didn't sometimes sound like his testicles were being probed whilst he sings. Testicle-pro d d i n g aside, Damien teh r0xx0rs.

He goes back and forth between kind of cheesy top 40 sensitive whiney rocker and compelling real from the soul music. I can't seem to decide if I should give him a thumbs up or down...I think both.
who doesn't love him really? amazing live too.
Damien Rice is amazing....m o s t beautiful voice and such prolific lyrics...I truly love listening to him and he always makes me feel fabulous when I do. Thanks DR.
He has the ability to sing about all aspects of emotion that truly make up a soul.
