David Cook
Biography
The winner of the seventh season of Fox's American Idol competition, David Cook is a rock-oriented vocalist with a bent toward a commercial post-grunge sound. Although born in Houston, TX in 1982, Cook grew up in Blue Springs, MO, where he first began singing in various elementary school concerts. The budding musician then participated in his high-school drama program and appeared in many musical productions. During his junior year of high school, Cook formed the band Axium along with a classmate and performed with the group throughout his college years, even releasing two independently produced albums that garnered some national recognition. Although he attended the University of Central Missouri on a theater scholarship, Cook switched degree programs after two years and studied graphic design instead. After graduating in 2006, he parted ways with Axium and moved to Tulsa, OK, to pursue his musical interests. While there, he worked as a bartender and performed with the band the Midwest Kings.
Cook released an independently produced solo album, 2006's Analog Heart, before auditioning for the 2008 season of the Fox vocal competition American Idol. (Not surprisingly, Analog Heart began to sell online during Cook's time on American Idol; it was ultimately pulled from Amazon. com not long after being listed as the website's number one seller.) Initially, Cook came to the Idol auditions to support his younger brother Andrew, who did not make the cut. However, after gaining encouragement from his brother, Cook sang Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" for the show's judging panel and was accepted into the competition's Hollywood round. A guitar player since age 12, Cook took advantage of the show's new rule allowing vocalists to play instruments on-stage, and for many of his subsequent performances accompanied himself on guitar.
Although he did not receive much attention during American Idol's early stages, his third week's performance of Lionel Ritchie's "Hello" drew rave reviews from the judges, who praised him for transforming an R&B song into a post-grunge power ballad. It was a formula that Cook would repeat with much success a few weeks later, when he performed a rock arrangement of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" borrowed directly from a recording by former Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell. Also bringing some extra attention to Cook was the revelation that his older brother was battling cancer. Sensationally, Cook was taken to the hospital during the competition for treatment for high blood pressure and heart palpitations, purportedly caused by stress over his brother's situation. However, he quickly returned to the show and dismissed the event as a minor precaution.
Often referred two as "the Battle of the Davids," the 2008 finale of American Idol pitted Cook against 17-year-old wunderkind David Archuleta, who many critics and fans predicted would beat the elder Cook. However, on May 21, 2008, Cook ultimately received 56 percent of the final vote and was crowned the winner. Two weeks later, 11 songs by David Cook entered the Billboard Hot 100, an unprecedented feat that nearly doubled the chart's previous record. His full-length major-label debut was released six months later, featuring collaborations with artists like Chris Cornell, Collective Soul's Ed Roland, and Our Lady Peace's Raine Maida. The album was certified platinum in early 2009, just as the new season of American Idol was starting up. ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide

probably the most legit rocker to come out of idol. he's not fake like other artists, he doesn't use gimmicks, all he uses is his voice and his band. i highly recommend listening to his album and not judging him on his crappy singles "come back to me" or "time of my life" listen to "declaration " , "bar-ba-sol" , and "mr. sensitive" for a real feel of david cook

I didn't care for David Cook on Idol. He pretty much sounded like so many of the popular artists. BUT I am extremely - and pleasantly - surprised at what a excellent job he did on this selection from Phantom of the Opera. He shows real talent in other areas of music - not just rock 'n roll! David Cook is an amazing artist and a genuinely good person. I've been to many of his shows and always enjoy them immensely. His voice is magnificent. He continues to improve his shows. He's a dynamic performer and never disappoints. He has a funny sense of humor and every show is different. It's only a matter of opinion that Analog Heart is better than his new stuff. I like the AH songs, but I like his new stuff better. Different things appeal to different people. Anyway, AH is not available.

I watched him on Idol and fell in love withhis music! When he did Hello I was crazy about him from that point on. He has a unique voice that I love. I am not usually a rocker but he made me one. One day I would love to see him live.So what does it say when a woman who is 57 years old starts listening to rock?

"The Music of the Night," is from Andrew Lloyd Weber's "Phantom of the Opera" And no one sings that song like Michael Crawford from the original London cast. But David does a pretty good job.

David is an amazing guy! He had some amazing arrangments last season on Idol (loved Eleanor Rigby, Hello, Music of the Night...) and has an amazing voice. So glad he won! :-)

and Sarah i think its all a matter of opinion who the better singer is.i think both Cook and Archuleta r great singers but i think Cook is better and just because an artist is young doesn't mean there good.Miley Cyrus is 16 and she sucks.Cook won not only because he has a great voice but because he showed the most diversity i mean look at what he did with Billie Jean.

its actually better if u don't win cause if u do u have no say in what music u sing.look at Kelly Clarkson she had 2 fight tooth and nail in order write her songs and have input in what she sings.Jennif e r Hudson and Chris Daughtry didn't win and they've had hugh success.the only ones who have come out of Idol who won and have been successful r Kelly Clarkson,Car r i e Underwood and David Cook.so really its better if u don't win.

David Cook is awesome!!! I am so glad that he won. I don't think I could've watched American Idol any more if Dacid Archuleta won.
