David Gilmour
Biography
David Gilmour is best known for his distinctively spacy, atmospheric guitar work for Pink Floyd. Born March 6, 1944, in Cambridge, England, Gilmour was well acquainted with the members of Pink Floyd when they asked him to join their band to supplement the guitar work of the increasingly erratic Syd Barrett. When Barrett's mental breakdown made it impossible for him to continue with the group, Gilmour became a permanent contributing member in time for their second album, 1968's A Saucerful of Secrets. Gilmour has recorded solo albums during periods of Pink Floyd inactivity, including 1978's moody David Gilmour, 1984's more melodic About Face (after the breakup of the Roger Waters-led lineup), and 2006's laid-back, lyrical On an Island (which became a Top Ten hit). A concert set, Live in Gdansk, appeared in 2008. Gilmour has also lent his guitar to a number of other artists' records, notably Kate Bush and Bryan Ferry. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Without David Gilmour there would be no Pink Floyd. One night they played in Sioux Falls, S.D. and shut down the entire radar system. All these planes circling around and around, asking what is going on down there? Oh. it's just Pink Floyd's light show. I thought that was so funny. You go guys.

i don't get it how is pink floyd a similar artist to david gilmour like omg wtf?
why can i not get nick mason's album, "Fictitious Sports"
i believe nick was the drummer for 'floyd'. ????? |

I always loved the Floyd, but never quite got the connection people make between them and Porcupine Tree (another fave). But now I'm listening to Gilmour's "On An Island," and it's completely clear who Steven Wilson grew up listening to. Outstanding, never showy, always about the music.

Dosch, no doubt. If people have not really learned it yet, all Gilmour does is incredible blues guitar n the coolest way. I have seen him play a couple of times and for anyone to think him some space cadet with an axe is insane. He changed the way people listen to the blues (granted the lyrics are unique) and how to appreciate how he interpreted them. He is truly amazing!!!

I must take exception to your characteriza t i o n of Gilmour's playing as spacey. David Gilmour is one of the finest English Blues guitarists to come out of the era, schooling the likes of Clapton, Beck and Paige in those early years.

i am so tired of these a**holes putting Led Zeppelin on my Pink Floyd station, whats the connection? i dont get it. There are maybe 5 guitarists who can raise the hair on the back of my neck, Gilmour is one of them. Hendricks, Page, Clapton, etc... dont do anything for me
people hear one side of a story and assume that's all there is to it...but they have no clue of what's really going on
Gilmour is definitely in the top five (guitarists) o f all time, can't believe he's already 65 years old!

HEY - SANDSANDBELL O W S - I AM IN A GIGGIN' BAND AND YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! I'VE WANTED TO QUIT SO MANY TIMES BUT THE LOVE OF THE SONG KEEPS ME HANGIN' IN - I SYMPATHIZE WITH DAVID AND THE REST OF THE GROUP - IT AIN'T EASY...MUSIC IS SUCH AN INTIMATE THING.
Do any of you actually know what it's like to be in a gigging band? It's a ton of work, and many times a member is in the band because he's a good player, not because you're best buds. Fact of the matter is, Pink Floyd are not a music factory. They are, in fact, people. People sometimes grow to hate each other, especially when they have to spend months in a tour bus with absolutely no privacy. It's not about egos. It just happens.
Quit being selfish and get over it, turds. |

Great and inspirationa l guitarist. It is unfortunate that David and Waters have egos so big that they won't perform together.

person below me
how dare you, without him and Roger, they would have never written those albums anyway |
Mr. Gilmour is an amazing guitarist, no doubt, one thing though: him an Roger deprived the world from enjoying more dark side of the moon, the wall, animals , which you where here, etc., type of albums that they still had ahead of them if not for their petty fights and arrogance. I, like a lot of their fans resent that. Now that Richard Wright is gone, a reunion is mute item. That will take the pressure of Gilmour since he was the one avoiding it.

David's newest album, On an Island, is without doubt the best solo album he's ever released. While Island does not necessarily explore new material for him, the mood and guitar playing of the title track elicit the most powerful moments of Animals-era Pink Floyd, while many of the remaining tracks find David expressing the finest examples of the brighter, more airy aspects of his musical range. Like fine wine, Mr. Gilmour has honestly refined with age. Kudos to you, David.

All around talent and easy on the eyes! I'm always comfortably numb listening to him.
