Dead Can Dance
Biography
Dead Can Dance combine elements of European folk music -- particularly music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance -- with ambient pop and worldbeat flourishes. Their songs are of lost beauty, regret and sorrow, inspiration and nobility, and of the everlasting human goal of attaining a meaningful existence.
Over the course of their career, Dead Can Dance has featured a multitude of members, but two musicians have remained at the core of the band -- guitarist Brendan Perry and vocalist Lisa Gerrard. Perry had previously been the lead vocalist and bassist for the Australian-based punk band the Scavengers, a group who were never able to land a recording contract. In 1979, the band changed their name to the Marching Girls, but they still weren't able to sign a contract. The following year, Perry left the group and began experimenting with electronic music, particularly tape loops and rhythms. In 1981, Perry formed Dead Can Dance with Lisa Gerrard, Paul Erikson, and Simon Monroe. By 1982, Perry and Gerrard decided to relocate to London; Erikson and Monroe decided to stay in Australia.
Within a year, Dead Can Dance had signed a record deal with 4AD. In the spring of 1984, they released their eponymous debut album, comprised of songs the pair had written in the previous four years. By the end of the year, the group had contributed two tracks to It'll End in Tears, the first album by This Mortal Coil, and had released an EP called Garden of the Arcane Delights. In 1985, Dead Can Dance released their second album, Spleen and Ideal. The album helped build their European cult following, peaking at number two on the U.K. indie charts.
For the next two years, Dead Can Dance were relatively quiet, releasing only two new songs in 1986, both which appeared on the 4AD compilation Lonely Is an Eyesore. Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, the group's third album, appeared in 1986. In 1988, the band released their fourth album, The Serpent's Egg, and wrote the score for the Agustin Villarongas film El Nino de la Luna, which also featured Lisa Gerrard in her acting debut.
Aion, Dead Can Dance's fifth album, was released in 1990. Also in 1990, the group toured America for the first time, earning rave reviews. The following year, the group was involved in various festivals and theatrical productions. In 1991, the compilation A Passage in Time was released on Rykodisc, making it the first American release of Dead Can Dance music. Early in 1993, the group provided the score to Baraka and contributed songs to Sahara Blue. In the fall of 1993, the group released Into the Labyrinth, which became their first proper studio album to receive an American release. Into the Labyrinth was a cult success throughout the U.S. and Europe. It was followed by another American and European tour, which was documented on the 1994 album and film, Toward the Within. In 1995, Lisa Gerrard released her debut solo album, The Mirror Pool. In the summer of 1996, Dead Can Dance released Spiritchaser and embarked on an international tour. The duo officially disbanded in 1999; Gerrard continued working as a solo artist and composed music for films such as Heat, The Insider, and Gladiator. Perry also established a solo career, issuing Eye of the Hunter in 2000. In 2001, Rhino released the band's first comprehensive box set, Dead Can Dance 1981-1998. Rumours of their reunion also began to swirl around this time, however Gerrard's solo career remained steadfast. Her work with composer Patrick Cassidy, Immortal Memory, followed in 2004. Several months later, Gerrard and Perry made it official and reunited for a world tour. Dates in North America and Europe followed in 2005 while Rhino once more recognized the duo with a greatest hits collection. Momento: The Very Best of Dead Can Dance appeared in October 2005. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Vladimir Bogdanov, All Music Guide

Regardless of my earlier comments, together Lisa Gerrard & Brenden Perry were musically supernatural .
Perfection. |

I can play Toward The Within over and over and it never grows old. Long live DCD!!

Brendan Perry can sound vaguely reminiscent of Jim Morrison on some songs. Lisa Gerrard sings, literally, in a language all her own. She sounds and looks Eastern European. She's much prettier than her pictures on Pandora portray. It looks like Pandora or Brendan Perry wanted to make her look goth.

Lisa Gerrard's music for Gladiator was good, but after hearing "Persephone (The Gathering Of Flowers)", I just couldn't bring myself to like her work. I don't think the song fits the myth behind it even remotely.
That said, Now We Are Free is an awesome song. |

Blessed to see them live in Portland,Or '96. Began loving their music in '89 after my randomly spontaneous purchase of a cheap but unique album(untitl e d , b u t for its unheard-of creators;Dea d C a n D a n c e ) purely drawn by the cover art. As a singer, their music deeply rooted into timeless nourishment for my musical psyche. But when I heard Lisa Gerard singing LIVE, in real time and space, Hers and Mine, all I could do was cry. So beautiful, her voice is Supernatural , it could not possibly be captured.

I was lucky enough to have seen DCD once and was thrilled to be able to see Lisa with Klaus Schulze in Germany last summer...her voice is like Midas - everything she touches is turned to gold....whic h is why the CD is named "Rheingold", I would imagine!!

Lisa sang on a video by the name Yulunga , I think it was taken from BARAKA . No language in this vocale I think if God will speak to all the world this will be His language.

Musidoro: I'd guess they (Dead can Dance, Siouxsie, Peter M) don't want to be called goth because they aren't. At least not anymore. for them association with the "goth" label is negative publicity. Can't hardly blame them when bands like Marilyn Manson and Slipknot are also called "goth" when they clearly aren't. That and - let's be real - most self proclaimed "goth" bands have the artistic talent of a paper sack on fire (even if they are fun to listen to).

'Toward The Within' I have on video. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. It takes me to a different world.

Its a shame Lisa and Brendan have gone their own ways. Their very last concert in Chicago a few years back was in words beyond incredible. I hope they have a reunion tour.
So glad I was introduced to their music when I was younger. I still listen to them to this day. The feelings that their voices and music invoke are powerful. Words are not adequate to describe them. It is a moving experience to lose yourself in their world.

Dead Can Dance(to me was the greatest project of all the time, for is originaliti and wonderful kind of instruments used) like a musical project is over, but Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard have another project, Arcana, and they have another record this year, still a diferent kind of music( but not much) is still great.

i love this band. discvered them b/c of Godsmack and now i cant live w/out them.Blacksu n , w h i t e world is my fav. if im stressed this is my way to unwind. hope to see them in person one day.

Lisa Gerrard's solo work on the movie soundtrack for "Gladiator" was especially my favorite.

gathering,ni g h t w i s h , l a c u n a coil are second line goth-but beside cure and peter murphy-you know as well as anyone that dead can dance and black tape for a blue girl are ist line GOTH GIANTS !
Is there a single widely known goth artist who actually WANTS to be called goth? I mean, when people like Siouxie and Peter Murphy deny being a part of that scene you just have to laugh. Ms. Gerrard may want to deny it as well but who do you see at DCD shows? GOTHS by the bucketful!
This why I OWN SUCH A SOUND SYSTEM PROGRAMED FOR DETAILED QUALITY ARRANGEMENTS AT CONTROLS THAT WAS AWESOME
Unfortunatel y , aside from the one-off's that this band does once every 13th blue moon, the band is no longer together. Lisa Gerrard does a lot of solo music, but they officially broke up some time ago. they do, however, come together for projects, and music rehashing, but nothing serious like before *cries*

Dead can dance touched my soul and now I can't stop listening!
Pandora introduced Dead Can Dance into one of my stations- caught me by surprise and pretty much seduced me. I am hooked.
They have had me under their spell for about 22 years. All their stuff is amazing. Lisa solo is unreal too.
Lisa can hate being called Goth, but they still make the kind of music that Goths respond to: beautiful, ethereal, deep, meaningful, full of feeling, genuine emotion. The beauty of darkness. Darkness isn't scary; ancient cultures respected the darkness as being where life came from. David, check out 'Toward the Within' DVD. I have that on video (should upgrade to DVD!); it's awesome! Unbelievable !
These two complete me. The music they create help me bring the sorrow, of my emotions, to the surface healing my need pains and frustrations . In a world of much needed healing, their music help remind me that healing is achieved one person at a time. Thank you *sobs happily*

I've seen this band twice live , both AMAZING performances ! I had the pleasure to be back stage with some of the members in Miami Florida many years ago.
Great Memories ! |
Call them what you will, but don't call them Goth. Lisa hates that! They are the forebears of all things dark, ethereal and gorgeous in the dream goth/world fusion scene. Saw them live in 1994 in NYC and it was certainly a great show.
WHATS TO SAY THIS IS THE GREATEST BAND EVER LISA GERRARD HAS A VOICE OF A ANGEL
There in NOT ONE opus you all create that is NOT totally outstanding! ! ! ! You definitely hit my musical brain with a spellbinding mesmerizing trance like state. I can't really do anything else but surrender my inner soul to your musical spell when my ears are tuned in to your music. Lisa! God but you're good!!!!! I think I love you!!!! Oh Yeah - the guys are great too! Thanks!! P.S. I'm getting everyone of your CD's. Do you also have any DVD's out?
