Deftones
Biography
Along with Limp Bizkit, the Deftones are often considered to be disciples of Korn, but in fact, they've been around for just as long (if not longer). They were also one of the first groups to alternate heavy riffs and screamed vocals with more ethereal music and hushed singing -- spawning a fair amount of imitators in their wake. The group first formed in Sacramento, CA, during 1988, when then high-school students Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), and Chino Moreno (vocals) first began to jam together. The young band was able to invest some heavy cash into their equipment setup early on, when Carpenter collected a substantial cash settlement after being hit by a drunk driver. The Deftones began playing out locally shortly thereafter, and went through several different bass players before finding a permanent bassist in the form of Chi Cheng.
Although the group was more heavy metal-based early on, the early '90s saw the Deftones expand their sound even further, obviously inspired by such groundbreakers as Tool, Rage Against the Machine, and Faith No More. A strong four-song demo was completed soon after, and it landed the group a recording contract with Madonna's label, Maverick. Enlisting the services of Soundgarden and Pantera producer Terry Date (who would eventually become a regular producer for the group), the quartet's debut full-length, Adrenaline, was issued in October of 1995. While it wasn't an instant success, the band built a dedicated fan base the old-fashioned way -- by touring relentlessly (both on their own, and opening for such more established acts as Ozzy Osbourne, L7, and their buddies in Korn). With sales of Adrenaline topping sales of 200,000 copies on word of mouth alone, expectations were high for their sophomore release, Around the Fur. Issued in October of 1997, it more than delivered, catapulting the band to the top of the alt-metal heap on the strength of such MTV/radio favs as "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)," as turntablist Frank Delgado expanded the group's lineup to a five-piece.
A seven-track import EP, 1999's Live, was issued as a stopgap release, as the Deftones began work on their third studio effort (Cheng also issued a spoken word release, The Bamboo Parachute, around this time as well). White Pony was eventually released in June of 2000 and proved to be one of the most eagerly anticipated heavy rock releases of the year. The album was another success (debuting at number three on the album charts), and it showed the quintet unafraid to experiment with their sound, as Moreno let such '80s modern rock influences as the Cure and the Smiths seep into the Deftones' sound. (After touring wrapped up for the album, Moreno formed a side project with two childhood friends, Team Sleep, which recorded an album featuring guest vocal appearances by ex-Faith No More singer Mike Patton and ex-Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur). Though Maverick expressed interest in releasing the album through the band's vanity imprint, Tone Def, the LP remained in limbo.
Soon the Deftones reunited to work on new ideas, and enlisted Date again to helm their new album. Eagerly anticipated by both fans and critics alike, The Deftones dropped in May 2003 and spawned the single "Minerva." The quintet then embarked on the Summer Sanitarium shed tour with heavyweights Metallica and Linkin Park. The Deftones ended up peaking at number two on the Billboard 200, and the band took a well-deserved break for rest and side projects. (Moreno, for example, found time to finally release Team Sleep's long-in-the-works album.) In October 2005, the Deftones issued a two-disc set of B-sides and rarities before returning with a new studio full-length, Saturday Night Wrist, a year later. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Thanks angel star...I'm so serious about that comment too.Close your eyes after taking the last hit and just float away into an oblivious abyss. It's literally like a whole other universe.Som e Tool is pretty bad a** in such a state of mind. All you do is think.I don't dabble in narcotics any more but the essence of those highs still come into play when I listen to them.

Check out Chino's other band "Team Sleep"...coo l moody stuff which actually has him singing more than in the 'tones. Good stuff.
Cool description of the music Succubus black lace. This band is pretty damn good.
Wanted to flame the reviewer for even grouping these guys with Limp Bizkit or saying they are disciples of Korn, but it looks like a few of you did already. I used to really not like these guys as I thought they were a bit too soft for a metal band, but they've been growing on me hard. Hope it keeps up.
My favorite new band is Shit Ton of Xannex. They do a lot of Deftones covers at their live show. Check 'em out!
the music you listen to when you're so f**king blitzed out of your mind and suddenly all your delusions surface and wrap around you in an intoxicating swirl of beautiful, bitter dreams. Yeah, they're that mesmerizing and it's amazing that a guy like him sounds so beautifully tantalizing.
am i on s**t ton of xannex yeah y not? is deftones old like a decade yeah. Chino cant let off the same curdling sreams like in my own summwr. so enjoy the new ways they do. is METALLICA gay yes that is because they are haha! no but they are trying the same garbage as always and it smells like a**!so i say respect the deftones for evolving just think on that. trying screaming at forty probly hard
I like a band that isn't afraid to explore creative new material. I don't personally care as much for SNW like others on here, but it has more to do with how much I like Adrenaline. They set a high bar with that ablum, and obviously it was heavier too. Maybe Chino will stop goin hiatus so we don't have to wait so long between albums.
as a huge deftones fan i try not to call any of there music horrible. ya saturday nigth writst was not there best, in my opinion. but i like one song on there. but like is was saying eariler in the post, i think he wrote this ablum around the same time he was creating his side project team sleep. and i think SNW got heavily influenced by it. there is team sleep residue all over SNW.
I really hope that EROS is a return to the metal......I am almost totally lost to the tones now with SNW.
Oh my lord that album is horrible.... s o r r r y , just my opinion but Im a big - around the fur, adrenaline fan. |
THESE GUYS ARE STILL ALL RIGHT I DONT LISTEN TO THEM AS MUCH BUT IF THEY STILL SOUNDED LIKE THERE 95 ALBUM (ADRENALINE) ID PROB LISTEN TO MORE.
Baron and Dspiral I hear you with SNW maybe being a lil soft with certain songs but in all honesty on most of the tones albums there are some soft songs. Granted however Hole in the earth does get played alot and its even on GH. Still though Mein, Kimdracula, And my fav Combat are the same hard hitting as before albums. Eros however they have said that they are returning to Adrenaline's roots. I think a band that can grow and adapt as the tones do makes them one of the last unique bands left.

Keep the faith. As a band progresses throught their own evolution. A need to satisfy ones artistic expression becomes desparate and unique. Lets see what happens=>
C'mon Chi. Feel the love and get strong. Breakout, brother. Break out! Come back to us.
I am like everyone else really sad, and hopefull for Chi's recovery - but just musically speaking I cant stand how the Deftones sound today. On one hand I love it when a band evolves, but (like Staind) I hate even more when a band loses its roots, And lets face it the Deftones roots is in metal. Sat Night was such a dissapointme n t and the overall evoulotion of this band has gotten so far away from the agnst, power and METAL of thier beginnings. Really dont like thier sound now.
God speed Chi |
Downward its Chi the bass player who is in a coma not Chino although he has def had his fair share of close calls in the hospital. Still can't Wait for EROS!!!!
downward: I agree. Their self-titled is amazing. It took me a couple of listens to really get it and appreciate it.
I remember picking up the 'Adrenaline' cd the day it came out. I was actually seeking out some b-sides of Faith No More and came across the Deftones and bought it on spot. Lemme just say it was one of the best knee-jerk impulse buys I've ever made. Hooked on the old stuff for sure.
why are they even mentioned in the same sentence as limp bizkunt and korn
i love the deftones! my 1st cd was white pony and it changed my life. i have been a deftones fan since i was seven!

whats funny is how deftones got bunched in with the korns and limp bizquits when they not only have a unique sound the none of them could capture they still make great records where the latter all have failed because they all stayed the same and never evolved and took risks deftones r truly one of those great bands that have taken chances and made art they're own way its sad what happend to chi but i truly hope that they never stop greating becuase they would truly b missed
I had never heard of these guys until White Pony. White Pony was the second CD i had ever bought. It changed my life. Got my hands on anything that I could by them afterwards. They were by far the best thing to come out of the "Korn/Limp Bizkit/Nu metal" s**t genre.
Deftones; first band I ever did see live. I saw them at Club La Vela in PCB, Florida in 97. I can't even describe it. Amazing! They've been with me ever since.
Deftones speak for alot of us. Effing soul over heavy riffs. I also used to listen to them back in school. Used to get get shroomed out like a mother. Dope free now but yeah, get better Chi.
So awesome his voice could paralize someone..... .
creepy.... |
It's probably been said before but I have to say it again - what a brilliant collaboratio n . . . . I daresay, a perfect collaboratio n with the entertwining vocals of Maynard and Chi, sucking you right in....wow, i'm bewitched..
i only used to listen to lb a little back in hs when i was extremely intoxicated. thats it. as far as the deftones, f**kin love them. hope chi gets better soon. last thing i heard he was still in a coma? sad s**t.
I keep seeing the LB word thrown around here, and I must say it is almost offensive.
