Dir En Grey
Biography
Dir en Grey have risen to become the top band of the post-visual kei era, especially for the Western audience -- in the 2000s they were arguably the most successful metal act without English lyrics since Rammstein (though not rivaling the popularity of the Germans). The band began as a visual kei collective, too, but gradually moved to more reserved and darker attires and a separate sound that leaned on gothic rock, death metal, and the likes of Korn and Slipknot.
Dir en Grey was formed in early 1997, essentially being the indie collective La:Sadies with a new bassist -- Toshiya -- and a new name that was supposed to carry no other meaning than to designate the band. They started off with the EP Missa (1997) that failed to stir things up a lot, but soon made themselves the talk of the country's music scene by becoming the first indie band to break into the Oricon singles Top Ten -- and doing it twice, with Jealous and I'll in 1998. That brought them into the right hands: they attracted Yoshiki Hayashi, the drummer of the nation's prime metal act X-Japan and the foster-father of many a J-rock band, thanks to his label Extasy Records. Yoshiki produced all five singles that Dir en Grey released in 1999, and that propelled the band into the big leagues: after these singles were released as their debut album Gauze, Dir en Grey got signed by a major label.
The second album, Macabre (2000), first signaled a drift from the visual kei roots, living up to its name in mood and featuring an industrialized sound with screaming vocals. Following their first foreign tour in China, Taiwan, and South Korea, and another LP Kisou, in 2002 (number three on Japanese charts), Dir en Grey opted for more change: their EP Six Ugly (2002) drew heavily on Western metal influences, which upset part of their older fanbase. Still, the band persisted, exploring the metalcore sound and the darker side of life on their albums Vulgar (2003, number six on the Oricon charts) and Withering to Death (2005, number eight on the Oricon charts). Those releases proved that the stylistic change had some merit, as Dir en Grey began to gain recognition in the Western hemisphere. In 2005 they charted in Europe for the first time, Withering to Death reaching number 31 in Finland (their single "Clever Sleazoid" would later rise to number 15 there). The band's popularity was initially founded on imports, web rumors, and illegal downloads, but that proved to be enough: in 2005 they debuted in Berlin and Paris and later played the German festivals Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park. Withering to Death was released in Europe in November 2005, and in America in March 2006, preceding Dir en Grey's live U.S. debut in 2006. Soon after that, Kyo's vocal chords gave in to strain, leaving the man hospitalized, but he recovered in time for the Korn's Family Values Tour, in which Dir en Grey participated.
The band's sixth full album The Marrow of a Bone was out in 2007, released in both Japan and America (it reached number seven on the Oricon charts), and Dir en Grey promoted it by touring the U.S., opening for Deftones on some of their shows. They also infiltrated Europe further, debuting in Denmark, Finland, Poland, Sweden, U.K., Holland, and Switzerland. Not forgetting their core audience, Dir en Grey toured Japan as well, delivering a two-night show with Linkin Park, and doing a stint at the Hide memorial concert that also saw the appearance of X-Japan and Luna Sea, among others. The fall of 2008 saw the release of the seventh album, Uroboros, in Japan and America, followed by a U.S./Canada tour in November and December. ~ Alexey Eremenko, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
Why is "Withering to Death." not on here!? It's aboslutely amazing, although I do love "Vulgar" as well. Frankly, I think "The Marrow Of a Bone" is the weakest album they've put out by far.

Agreed with trixxx1. Saying that Dir en grey's sound "leans on the likes of Korn and Slipknot" is like saying that Ferruccio Lamborghini traveled to America in 1908, saw the Ford Model T, then went back to Italy and made the Lamborghini Miura, and then saying that the Miura "leans on the likes of the Ford Model T."
Pandora definitely needs to add Withering to death, Gauze, and Uroboros at least to their Dir en grey collection. |

This will be a shamelessly blatant troll, but whomever worked on this artist description and compared Dir en Grey to Slipknot needs to DIAF. Diru proudly displays aspects of dark-edged rock, metal, gothic sensibilitie s , intensly intricate lyrical and compositiona l work, the ability to transition flawlessly from absolute headbanging thrash to hauntingly ethereal melodies and more. Slipknot exists because whiny nu-metal needs a banal, constant level of mediocrity.

Your right, I wonder why Pandora only has two of their albums. Withering to Death, is an awesome album. Why isn't it on here?
i heard yokan, and they stole my heart. and some other parts of my body.

Why do they only have two albums? Dir en Grey has so much more to offer! Their extreme talent is incredible and they are definitely my favorite band. The emotions that Kyo conveys with his unique vocals is wonderfully partnered with amazing guitar (Daisuke and Kaoru), awesome bass (Toshiya), and beautiful drums (Shinya). They go above and beyond ANY other band I have ever heard, the level of talent and perfected blend of each member is not even comparable to any other artist.

I have been a fan from Dir en Grey from the beginning to now. Their musical style has changed greatly but each of the band members personalitie s adds to the style and feeling of the lyrics and music with each passing year. Diru is a truly wonderful band but they are band that needs in some ways to be seen and heard for their core message to be found within each fan.

Dir en grey is the awesomeness! Been a fan for almost as long they've been Dir en grey, and one thing is for sure: these guys work their butts off!! They create very awesome music and shows! They tour like all year long every year! insane!! This is definetly a band you need to see live. Way better to see them headlining though to take in more of their music lol. I think this is one of the few bands I'm a true fanatic of! Seriously, you need to listen to them.
These guys are great I just hate their fanboys/girl s who drool over them like they are the best metal band ever...which they are most definatly not.
I love Dir En Grey! I saw them live, it was mind-blowing . I bought UROBOROS there and got it signed by Die and Kaoru!!!

These Guys kick so much a**. Its like their punching my face through the computer with their pure and epic awesomeness!
I can't make a decent J-rock or J-pop station going without Pandora lumping in other countries' bands. The J in J-Rock and J-Pop means "Japanese." Please Pandora stick to that. Seriously, why do I get British fantasy metal and Dutch electronic body music or emo bands with "Tokyo" in the band name when I have artists like Gackt and Malice Mizer?! Emo does not equal J-rock, PERIOD! And for Christ sake PLEASE ADD the GazettE!
I missed their Portland concert- and the sad thing was was that i had the ability to go, but didn't know it until it was too late. DX
D: I was SO upset. I could of totally seen them in concert, but I had an Amanda Palmer concert to go to the night before, and I couldn't spend two days in Denver. ;o;
They're great, btw. <33 |
Hehe cause my email to them about adding some Jrock(Dont you dare flame me for calling them JRock or so god help me ill sick Krauser on you)did something. ^_^
this is like the best jrock band out there and i love them i cant wait to see them in concert
I cannot wait for Uroboros. This band has never failed to please me in the 9 years that I have come to know about them.
This band is the greatest of all time. Perhaps the only band I'm truly fanatic about. However, they need a better and more accurate biography. It doesn't even come close to scratching the surface of these talented musicians. Please get more albums. For starters, Gauze and Kisou should be on the list.
Yeah, Dir en grey is an amazing band, and really deserve a lot more in their bio, along with adding much more of their music (some of the best songs are left out!)to the list. Anyone that stumbles upon this page wanting to learn more of Dir en grey, check em out - promise it'll be worth your time :)
Dir en grey is perhaps one of the most ingenius japanese bands out there and Kyo's music personaly has been a great influince upon my own writing and sound
Love Dir en Grey, been listening for years. My only complaint is that I have yet to find any bands that even come close to matching my musical tastes as closely, except maybe some Deftones. Dir en Grey really seems to touch on everything I like. Any recommendati o n s on similar bands?(A reply on my profile so I'm sure to see it would be awesome, but I'll take what I can get.)
Di En Grey! sooo wanna c them in concert! I know the words to almost all their songs XD w00t!! bio is off, and they really should put The GazettE, Alice Nine, & Girugamesh. Some others too. :D
These guys put on an AMAZING show. Though, I agree, the bio is inaccurate (their La:Sadie's days are left out for one thing). I really hope Dozing Green gets uploaded sometime.
I LOVE DIR EN GREY! i really want them to put gazettE, alice nine and girugamesh on here that would be awsome
