Donald Fagen
Biography
Donald Fagen was one of the two masterminds behind Steely Dan, the seminal jazz-pop band of the '70s. Fagen's solo work has been a continuation of the band's work of the early '80s -- carefully constructed and arranged, intricately detailed pop songs that are more substantial than their stylish surface may indicate. His 1982 solo debut, The Nightfly, was the best album he had made in years; it covered the same ground as the last two Steely Dan albums, yet surpassed them in terms of ambition and achievement.
After the success of The Nightfly, Fagen suffered a case of writer's block; for the rest of the decade he contributed music to the occasional film and briefly wrote a column for Premiere magazine in the mid-'80s. In the early '90s, he toured with the New York Rock and Soul Revue as he finished the material for his second album. With his former Steely Dan partner Walter Becker producing, 1993's Kamakiriad sounded like Aja recorded with '90s technology. It had some success on the adult contemporary charts, but it was overshadowed by the duo's decision to re-form Steely Dan and tour for the first time in nearly 20 years; the tour was a massive success. One more album -- 2003's Everything Must Go -- came out of the reunion before Fagen decided to begin work on his third solo album. With death as its main theme, Morph the Cat appeared in March 2006. Soon after the album's release, Fagen embarked on his first solo tour. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Have all of his recordings! |

I saw them live at the Fox Theater in St. Louis last year.Always a favorite, the band was as I expected, merely amazing musicians.

Great artist-- incomplete and inaccurate biography. Kamakiriad sounded nothing like Aja. No mention of the comeback album -- 2000's Two Against Nature- which the grammy for Record of the Year. Steely Dan still alive and well and solo efforts are worked within the framework of the band.

He's one of the greatest musicians... e v e r ! !I saw them (him) in Durham NC and The Dan was absolutely wonderful.Ev e r y b o d y knows Fagen is the heart & soul of Steely Dan.

The Kennedy Center seriously needs to consider bestowing one of their honors on Donald and Walter for the entire body of work.

Steely Dan/Fagan is my favorite artist, not only for their exquisite execution, but for their sheer ability to avoid repetition and keep the sound fresh but familiar.

The history omits in discography Two Against Nature which won Steely Dan the Album of the Year Grammie over an enraged Madonna. Everything Must Go is Steely Dan closing down the store again.

I don't think it is, but it should be. key changes and his subtle use of dissonance.. . l i k e a refined Thelonius Monk...and they have exceptionall y clever lyrics. The lyrics to Aja are really worthy of a graduate thesis, if you know anything about Asian religion. Nice to see tasteful music fans here.

I agree with all: brilliant and timeless. Donald Fagen is absolutely unique among composers. His sense of assembling key changes within - and between - stanzas (and getting other artists in the group to follow him in a timely fashion in that) is absolutely stunning. NOBODY ELSE does it like he does in contemporary music. His work should be in the Guggenheim for study. Is it?

Brilliant guy...The Nightfly is a masterpiece and reveals just how instrumental (excuse the pun) he is to the success of Steely Dan.

People willm be listening to Steely Dan for centuries to come. It is immortal.

Fagan is brilliant as both a lyricist and a composer/pro d u c e r . From Deacon Blues to IGY or FM, he is simply brilliant. Kamakiriad and Gaucho was good too but no Nightly. I just hope that they don't fall into the whole smooth jazz thing and that they stop before then.

There are a handful of true iconic innovators to have come out of The ROCK sceen. Steely Dan, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix Brian Wilson,Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush. These are the truly touched by the grace of God people. These are the Chopan, Bach and Beehaovan's of our time.

So glad my dad put me onto his music at an early age. I used to make fun of jazz music as a kid but now I love it. A shame its $175 to go see Steely Dan's concert in South Florida.
Fagan is one of the best lyricists/ composer of his generation! Unreal talent who's metaphors and writing style is second to none. Everyone I know I've converted into S.D/ Fagan fans. The grooves and the lyrics are just to powerful to dislike!
For the sake of accuracy "Two Against Nature" came out in 2000. So two steely albums before Morph

This bio needs a little work. They seem to be forgetting "Two Against Nature" in the post-reunion summary. And suggesting that either a.) there were two SD albums between Aja and Nightfly, or b.) that Nightfly surpasses Aja in "ambition and achievement. " Either point being silly.

Forever unique! I respect this artist- even now! He crafts a song so well. IGY created such a peaceful, hopeful state of mind and it relaxes me to listen to it any time. Donald Fagen is a genius- so ahead of his time. I need to hear more of my faves everyday- him with or without Steely Dan...There are a few songs of his I don't like, but the ones that I like outnumber the ones I don't. Keep craftin dude...

All the wry phrasings and unparalleled layered complexity of SD without the dark, depravity of a damaged protagonist when paired w/ WB

I love the muscianship and all the great back-up players he incorperates ! It is always summer with Steely Dan playing!
Donald Fagen is the ultimate perfectionis t . . . . . I love all Steely Dan work, front to back. His solo work is great too!!!!
Again another voice that is so distinct. Makes you feel good to hear it. I'll have another black cow please!
Donald Fagen is a good listener to fun things and has the beat to match. I easily get into this kind of rhythm.
the recording of this album broke new ground when it came out, and for me the album still sounds fresh...thx donald.
Fagen is the S**T!!!!!! I'm under 30 and highly appreciate the work of Donald and Walter!
I could never thank my Dad enough for playing Nightfly (& Steely Dan) on roud trips as a kid... Great memories.

I have loved Steely Dan since Kenny Vance wandered into WKCC, the college radio station I "worked" at, at Kingsboro Community College in Brooklyn. He came to play some "tapes" of a little band he was promoting... . i t was Steely Dan!
