Editors
Biography
Neo-post-punk quartet Editors formed in 2003. Originally dubbed Snowfield, the group comprised singer/guitarist Tom Smith, lead guitarist Chris Urbanowicz, bassist Russell Leetch, and drummer Ed Lay, all music technology students at Britain's Stafford University who relocated to Birmingham after graduation. A series of a well-received club dates and a single demo tape earned Editors the interest of British labels large and small, and after a bidding frenzy the group signed to a revitalized Kitchenware, the venerable British indie once home to Prefab Sprout. Kitchenware issued their debut single, "Bullets," in early January 2005 and the record sold out in one day, earning comparison to the dark, dramatic sound of contemporary bands like Interpol and Bloc Party as well as ancestors like Joy Division and Echo & the Bunnymen. Editors' follow-up, "Munich," made them darlings of the U.K. music press, and just weeks after their standout performance at the annual Glastonbury Music Festival, the band issued its third single, "Blood." Their much-anticipated debut LP, The Back Room, followed in mid-2005. "Munich" was reissued in January 2006, placing The Back Room in the Top Five on the U.K. album chart and earning the band a gold record. A joint North American tour with stellastarr* coincided with the stateside release of The Back Room in March, and a Mercury Music Prize nomination followed in July. Editors' sophomore effort, An End Has a Start, came out the following summer, preceded by the single "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors." ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

i agree mr c. editors are one of the best bands ever. they need to tour here in the states. I would love to see them!!

Good lord some of you are embarrassing . This is actually really good music. Get away from mainstream pop.
Interesting. I guess I never looked at Editors Pandora page. I have The Back Room, and it's outstanding. Of course I only bought it because it was on sale when I was buying other stuff. But I like it, and will buy their other one. If Interpol came first, which they did, then how can you not say copycat? That's not always a bad thing. Oh, and I think they both have stupid lyrics.
Haha his voice sounds like the vampire puppet from Forgetting Sarah Marshall
you yanks are all deaf as well as fat and stupid... lol the land of the clones
While we are on the 'sounds like game,' I hear a little Dead Can Dance in there.

Although indeed their style is very similar to that of Interpol there are some distinct differences. . . Perhaps even enough to allow the enjoyment of editors without having to focus on their "copy-cattin e s s " . The vocals, in my opinion are fairly different from those of Interpol. The lead singer's voice is distinctly lower, and maybe even less annoying. I might even go as far as to say that The Editors' vocals are better than Interpol's. However, Interpol has a sort of put-together n e s s that is gud

I love these guys! my favorite quote from one of their songs is, "In the end, all you can hope for is the love you felt to equal the pain you've gone through".
I like them. Listening to Munich I like to imagine Frank Sinatra as the singer.

If Editors is derivate, so is Interpol. A band can make perfectly good music even if it is derivative.
Muse is not a Radiohead wannabe band. Bellamy sounds like Yorke, but only sometimes. Muse has many influences. Queen is another. (Ever heard "Soldier's Poem"?) Muse recalls '70's progressive rock bands at times. To say that Muse is a Radiohead wannabe band is like saying that Beyonce is an Etta James wannabe because she covered "At Last." |
Kind words? I guess I'll keep calling you a douche then, one thing I won't argue with. How did I contradict myself exactly? In my original post I said they sound incredibly similar to Interpol, I never said I didn't like them, infact I said "I like both bands." You should probably learn to read before you begin typing on your fisher price keyboard. douche.
Thanks for the kind words AmiKelson. You contradict yourself and then get upset because Muse is a wannabe Radiohead band. Don't worry, Muse will always have Knights Of Cydonia (That's about the ONLY original stuff they have) I say they kindly ask Radiohead to join the band, somebody has to make the tea for Thom and Johnny.
I'd rather not turn Editors page into a flame war because this is a great band and this douche down here wouldn't probably care if it did turn into one. I am embarresed for you quite honestly. I thought we all gave up the short bus line in 3rd grade...
Muse totally ripped Radiohead off. Last I heard, Radiohead was suing Muse over that rip-off case. Interpol and local authorities are said to be investigatin g the case. You have no clue what you speak of AmiKelson. Did you ride the short bus in school? Where is your helmet?
i usually don't like to say one band sounds like another because it's usually not the case. (like people who say Muse sound like Radiohead are, infact, complete retards). Having said that, Editors sound incredibly similar to Interpol. I like both bands but I could probably put all their songs in a big shuffle and hardly tell any difference.
Ozmarelda: well said.
I think these guys are fine. They sound like Joy Division, but so what? So does Interpol. So do countless other bands. That says more about Joy Division's influence on modern rock than anything else. |
I don't care what you guys say. Hdcardona said what I was thinking. I understand flattery is complimentar y , but there is nothing slightly original to anything I've heard from these folks. I'm trying to be open minded, but it's not working.
Just because artists have a similar aesthetic doesn't mean they're posers or copycats. Interpol's Paul Banks is on the same page as Ian Curtis of Joy Division, who took more than a little inspiration from Jim Morrison, whose vocal style grew out of Frank Sinatra's deadpan croon. Frankie, by the way, rocked the skinny tie before most of us were born.

To hdcardona -
/cookie. /bedtime. When you grow up someday, you'll come to understand how petty your observation truly is. The great expanse of brain tissue may overwhelm you, at first. Give it time. If you actually follow through with your own thoughts once in a while. . .You just might harness an actual opinion worth reading by others. Good luck with that. Editors + Interpol are equally delicious to the ears, if you ask me. Why force them to compete when you can enjoy them both ? |
I want that dude's, I think Tom Smith, trench coat. That thing just looks awesome. I must wonder how to go about acquiring one.
Im sorry, how many band wear the "skinny black ties"? What a lame comment. Billy from Green Day wears a skinny black tie too sometimes... d o e s that mean he wants to be like Interpol too. and to be quite honest, I think Interpol would appreciate the compliment. Copycat is the scincerest form of flattery. Go learn something why dont you.
These guys jumped on the Interpol bandwagon. They even go as far as wearing the skinny black leather ties. Posers!!
The editors, stellastar* and interpol would make one great show. :)
