Emiliana Torrini
Biography
An Icelandic singer/songwriter whose music embraces elements of folk, electronica, pop/rock, and trip-hop, Emiliana Torrini has earned favorable comparisons to such vocally gifted artists as Beth Hirsch, Kirsty Hawkshaw, and Björk. Torrini was raised in Kópavogur, where she worked at her father's Italian restaurant and attended opera school as a teenager. After releasing three albums in her native Iceland (Spoon, Crouçie D'où Là, and Merman), she joined forces with Tears for Fears' Roland Orzabal to produce her first widely released album, 1999's Love in the Time of Science. The famed Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson heard her cool, otherworldly croon and approved Torrini to voice the finale music for 2002's The Two Towers, a job that Björk had previously accepted before backing out due to pregnancy. Torrini followed up this cinematic achievement by co-writing a pair of songs for Kylie Minogue (including the number one hit single "Slow") and releasing the soft-spoken but beautiful Fisherman's Woman, her first album for the London-based label Rough Trade Records. Fisherman's Woman was a back-to-basics effort that deemphasized Torrini's use of electronics in favor of acoustic guitar, piano, and the singer's cherubic vocals. It also cemented her fruitful partnership with producer Dan Carey, who remained with Torrini during the recording of her next solo effort, 2008's Me and Armini. ~ Andrew Leahey & MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Me and Armini one of best songs in album. Torrini has taken the essence of a raggae beat and turned into something graet. Torrini is a great artist, well worth listening to - - one of today's most talented and creative.

She's got at least 2 major styles going on here. She's come up separately on a folk station and an electronica (sort of) station of mine, and would never have guessed it was the same person. Love it!
She almost sounds like a tame version of Bjourk, who is also Icelandic. Maybe it's just the accent. Ethier way I love Emilia.... and Bjourk.
I can only think 'balkm' was thinking of Kelli Dayton/Ali of Sneaker Pimps fame, they sound very similar. Or possibly Luscious Jackson, but that is a stretch.

Oh I don't claim to a song writer and I don't see how that's even relevent. I guess I need to be a film director too to have an opinion on a movie, oh wait, no I dont.
I really like her sound. It is reminiscent of the 60's, but also a seductive modern sound. Bravo!!!
oh tmp3z. you are a much better song writer. you have every right to be so critical of her... at home alone on your computer, living in your cyber world.

Beautiful voice, terrible songwriting. Terrible.
Tries way too hard to be Bjork random and fails miserbly. |
i'm listening to Big Jumps right now, it's cool! ilike her voice, it's kind of like playful and stuff. i don't know, but i like it.
gorgeous... like a quick trip to the store in your mind. voice like a nordic Allison Krauss
I just heard her for the first time and love it. It's nice to have the feminine vocalist siging well written acoustic songs.
Voice is a bit like Bjork, but i suppose they are both from Iceland so i see how the correlation works out.
She makes me proud of my Icelandic heritage. Wish her all the best! Can't wait to hear more.
Ben, I agree. Every time I listen to "Hearts of Space" on NPR Stephen Hill mentions some Icelandic artist.
She is an amazing artist to see live as well. The musicians are truly talented!
Thanks Elissa, I've always wondered who the voice was in "Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes"
if you listen to this, and you imagine that it's one of your friends doing karaoke as a joke, it's pretty funny. i imagine in many starbucks this is playing, old ladies are digging it.
I don't know, her voice is just beautiful, and I think the lyrics are awesome.

She's also done the vocals for a few Thievery Corporation songs, such as "Heaven's Gonna Burn Your Eyes" and "Until the Morning Comes." Fans should give them a listen.
For some reason, I love listening to people with English accents sing. 8D
So cute.~ |
Her voice is very sweet, and her music is melodic in a pleasantly eccentric way. "Dead Things" is an amazingly haunting song.
