Ensiferum
Biography
A melodic power/death/folk metal band delving in Viking legends for lyrical inspiration, Helsinki, Finland's Ensiferum had to continually coexist with various simultaneous metal projects undertaken by its members. Founded in 1995 by guitarist Markus Toivonen, Ensiferum worked up a number of demo tapes before finally attracting the attention of Finland's powerhouse metal label, Spinefarm, which released their eponymous debut in 2001. The sophomore Iron followed in 2004, and both albums featured vocalist Jari Mäenpää, bassist Jukka-Pekka Miettinen, keyboardist Meiju Enho, drummer Oliver Fokin, and of course Toivonen. Many of these were active in black/dark metal act Arthemesia at the same time, and Mäenpää subsequently announced his departure to start a new band called Wintersun. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Ensiferum is surprisingly versatile, it's really amazing. Some of it is more folksy, some is more melodethy. Not quite sure about power, though.
holy crap willophobia, keep your godsmack loving bs elsewhere, this is where we talk about real metal
They did release a horrible music video for one of the new songs...real l y boring to watch.
...It did have "Viking Zombies" though...the y were listed in the credits... |
Yeah but I heard the new album has only 5 tracks on it. They always do that, get you with your monies worth one time then they stick it to you with 5 tracks. Iron was defenitely the best of them all and Victory Songs was done while they were drunk or something cuzz that thing was kind of whack.

@Moridin: Yeah, it just depends on the listener. Fans of power metal tend to lean more towards Turisas, while death and black metal fans usually lean towards Eluveitie.
thanks for the suggestions plague, eluveitie is awesome, turisas is good but not as good
Petri Lindroos does have a unique scream...He' s one of those vocalists that sings underneath his scream. An ability that I respect.
Screaming instead of singing will generally get a thumbs down from me, unless it's in very small doses in an otherwise scream free song, or if it's counterbalan c e d by the rest of the piece being generally awesome - Ensiferum has landed squarely into the latter category. Very interesting.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Ensiferum a few times now, and they blow me away every time. Awesome band with tons of energy that knows how to have fun, and not a silly breakdown in sight. xD
Wintersun's decent, but it just seems like a waste of time to me, unless you're really that in love with Jari's voice.
@Moridin: Check out Eluveitie and Turisas if you haven't already.

Willow, all you have accomplished is turn from a annoying mosquito buzzing around the room to one buzzing in my ear. We all know what happens to mosquitoes within arms reach ... they tend to transition into a 2-dimensiona l state!
Why am I getting a Final Fantasy vibe off of these guys? Anyways still good :D
I'm pretty sure that Godsmack would be the opposite direction of where they're headed. Now if this was the Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, or Muse page or something, you'd have a point.
Love this band. Saw them live at Paganfest, they blew my mind. Petri is glorious live, so I can't complain. The amount of energy they bring to a live show is insane! My fiancee saw them opening for Amon Amarth, and said they were better than the main act.
I agree that they were best with Jari (Who is a god) but Petri is magnificient too, and sounds very much like Jari (recorded) live. Paganfest is a good example, and I'm very happy to say they are FANTASTIC live. Also, if you hate Petri in Ensiferum, maybe you'll like him in Norther. Watch Death Unlimited, and see the awesomeness that is Petri Lindroos. Hail!
they were best with Jari Maenpaa. Petri is damn good but its just not the same. wish Jari was there for Paganfest
Willow is still here?...wow. and what amazes me most is that the has found and harrased just about every single band on pandora, in every metal genre, no matter how obscure the band is, every board I have looked on has seen some incarnation of willow blaspheming them. in the end, it is just best to ignore them, and pity them, perhaps pray for them even.
Ignore the willows, at all costs. They/he has been plaguing Pandora for a LONG time now, saying everyone sucks but Godsmack. You'll also notice other users with names relating in harm to the Willow user(s) just because they are nothing but a pain in the rear.

"All of the best music of the world comes from Sweden and Finland." Don't forget Norway!
Wtf Godsmack? Talk about a real pile of uncreative generic s**t.
Weeping Willow is kind of sounding like an American mainstream f*g. Ensiferum = way more creativity and a way fucken better sound. Funny that you could even try to make that kind of comparison in the first place. |
All of the best music of the world comes from Sweden and Finland. Enough said. :)
Oh My god this is good! A perfect example of why I haven't found a terrible finnish band yet!
I said a long time ago on some band (I forget which one) that:
Swedish death metal=Best Death Metal But what I should of said was: Swedish AND Finnish death metal=BEST DEATH METAL AND IT MELTS MY F**KING FACE OFF! |
One of the best, of many, great Finnish melodic death/folk/p o w e r / v i k i n g band out there
I really like the guitar work and the lyrics. Helps set the band apart from the more mainstream metal groups.
It says melodic power/death/ f o l k as in this band uses a mixture of the genres. They DO have some power hidden away in the tracks I've heard.
Ensiferum is folk metal! Too much power metal is played when I use them as a station. They are classified incorrectly in my opinion.
