Evanescence
Biography
The goth-inspired Arkansas rock band Evanescence, with its Linkin Park-meets-Tori Amos sound backed by chugging guitars, easily made it to the top of the charts in 2003 with its Wind-Up Entertainment debut album, Fallen. Singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody formed the band at the end of the '90s after meeting in their early teens during a "youth camp," Moody said in a statement. "I heard Amy playing Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything for Love' at the piano. So I went over to meet her, and she started singing for me. I was pretty much blown away, so I suckered her into joining a band with me."
As a duo, Evanescence didn't perform live, instead opting to release EPs and the full-length Origin. Lee told the BBC that Evanescence was mastering demos in Memphis, TN, when she and the band were discovered by producer Pete Matthews. He shopped the songs to record companies in New York, and Evanescence -- rounded out by bassist Will Boyd, guitarist John LeCompt, and drummer Rocky Gray -- eventually landed a contract with Wind-Up, the home of Creed. The soundtrack to the 2003 Ben Affleck action movie Daredevil brought success to Evanescence; the begging "Bring Me to Life," which appeared on the soundtrack along with the ballad "My Immortal," became a hit. (Paul McCoy, of labelmates 12 Stones, rapped on "Bring Me to Life," which originated as a piano ballad.) The songs proved to be a head start to Evanescence's future hit album Fallen, produced by Dave Fortman (Boy Sets Fire, Superjoint Ritual) and released in March 2003.
Evanescence ran head first into controversy promoting Fallen. Originally, it was released in the Christian and secular markets; however, the band's use of profanity during an interview with Rolling Stone prompted its label, Wind-Up Records, to recall Fallen from Christian stores. Ironically, 12 Stones are also labeled Christian. Fallen surpassed double-platinum status, reaching the Top Ten in the United States, including the Top Contemporary Christian Albums chart, the Top Five in Canada, and number one in the United Kingdom. It spent more than 100 weeks on Billboard's Top 200; Evanescence also managed to pick up two Grammys (Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance) for the 2003 awards.
During a European tour late that same year, however, Moody abruptly left the group over apparent creative differences. Ex-Cold guitarist Terry Balsamo soon replaced him in the band; he clicked with Lee and the two became cohesive songwriting partners who worked to further define Evanescence's classically influenced hard rock identity. The band continued to tour nonstop for the next year, and they issued the live album Anywhere But Home (recorded at a show in Paris) in November 2004 to hold over fans hungry for their follow-up. It also went platinum. More internal band drama ensued -- including Balsamo recovering from a stroke suffered in fall 2005 and Boyd's departure the following summer -- before that album, The Open Door, finally appeared in early October 2006. Tim McCord (ex-the Revolution Smile) joined up in Boyd's place that August, switching from his usual guitar to bass. Spearheaded by the single "Call Me When You're Sober," the album displayed a broader emotional range amid the band's evolving sound. Evanescence played several intimate theater dates immediately following the record's release before moving on to larger arena shows. ~ Christina Fuoco, All Music Guide

I really don't see what the big deal about gay people is. Really, I miss this one completely. I couldn't care less. A guy I work with says the problem is that a couple of the same sex can't make children. I said we have too damn many people on this planet anyway, so where's the problem? Don't we need more then? I think I'm just too much of an engineer to understand prejudice. You gotta show me numbers and logic.

thanks for the addition, Phoenix. :)
you can decide who want to be on the outside but you can't decide who you are on the inside.
@All:i'm gay and i've delt with people telling me its a sin and that i must have chose to be that way but i don't believe its a sin or that i chose it.i believe i was born that way.i believe there's a reason that i am.i don't know what the reason is but i don't believe a person can choose there sexuality just like you can't choose your hair color, eye color or the sound of your voice.no one can choose or decide how there born.i believe everything happens for a reason.
@Melanie:Dav i d Hodges who was a member of Evanescence at the time tried to market them as a Christian group.Amy Lee and Ben Moody the core members and founders of the group didn't want to be marketed as a Christian group so Hodges left.then Ben Moody left do to creative differences with Amy Lee over the direction of there second album The Open Door.

I'm happy to have a religious conversation with reasonable cooperation (or really good).
all I know is that Ev's records once were sold in Christian stores. after a while during Fallen era, their records stopped being sold at such places. I won't be surprised if the band had a Christian member. because not all Christian musicians write music about Christian themes. |
although I've born and raised Catholic, I believe many faiths are right when it comes to treating one another, yourself, and everything around you. so I don't find a certain religion wrong in that sense.
I'm more of a spiritual person, so I respect religion, but I don't follow a certain path. the fact that the core of Christianity is love is quite ironic when you look at the Inquisitions , witch trails, holy wars, and some political debates. but those are the extremists.. . my bad... |
Yeah, I know that's where it started. I think I had a hand in that.
God doesn't hate anybody. There's no way God can hate anyone when he doesn't even hate Lucifer; they just can't live together anymore, lol. But seriously, if someone says God hates you, they're just trying to justify what they want to believe. |
@Verbal: Yeah, that's kind of where the whole religion conversation started up, talking about whether they were a Christian band or not. As long as we're not offensive about it, I find it very easy for people to share beliefs without anger and rancor.
@Phoenix: Yeah, I see where you're coming from. The tragedy is that Christianity , at its core, is about love. The way to win people is to show them love, not damn them to hell. |
because 1.of course people back then thought that cause they didn't understand a lot of things.2.God decides who goes to Hell and who doesn't.and 3.no one truly knows what God does or doesn't like.the thing is its human nature to fear what you don't understand and pass judgement on it.there are things i don't understand but i try not to judge cause its not my right to judge or tell someone how to live there life.
@Verbal:Amy Lee has said on many occasions that they are not a Christian Band.but a lot of religious people choose to believe they are.
@Plaque:i understand that some people don't understand Homosexualit y but callin' them an abomination, t e l l i n ' them there goin' to Hell and that God hates them is wrong in my opinion. |
Didn't this band claim they aren't a Christian band? Lol.
Wow, I have to congratulate all of you. This is the longest running religious conversation I have ever seen without anger, screaming, and telling someone their soul is doomed to hell. My wife's entire family is Catholic and they can't even talk religion this long without that. On the other hand, I don't think they can talk about anything this long without that...lol! |
(continued)
Yes, the bible says that homosexualit y is wrong, but it also says that no sin is greater than any other sin. Homosexuals are held to the same standard as heterosexual s . We're told that lust is a sin (whether it's after men or women), we're told that premarital sex is a sin (once again, regardless of orientation) , and we're told both biblically AND biologically that sodomy is just unnatural. So in the end, both orientations are held to the same standards. |
@Phoenix: If you do read it, remember to take it in context. As far as sexism goes, early Christianity was liberating to women if you look at how they were traditionall y treated. It definitely isn't racist (new testament, anyways. I can see how you could argue it for the old testament), as it offers salvation to both the Jew and the Gentile (eveybody else). As for homosexualit y , that's probably going to require another comment in itself.
@Old Man Winter:well i'll consider it ok.but the impression's that i have right now are that the bible is sexist,racis t and homophobic.s o i don't know if i would ever read it.and i apologize for sayin' i hate the bible.i should blame it for the ignorance and misinterpret a t i o n s of others.
Well, I am surprised to find a theology discussion on the Evanescence page. @Phoenix: unfortunatel y there are many hypocritical Christians (as well as Muslims, Christian Scientists, Mormons, etc.)
@All: The only way to know what is a misinterpret a t i o n or not is to read the books. biblegateway . c o m and http://quod. l i b . u m i c h . e d u / k / k o r a n / I don't know what the Christian Science book is called. |
@Pheonix: I try not to accept others opinions on the sole basis that the share them. It's possible they are mistaken. I'm not sure what their problem was with you, but I would bet that this is a case of misinterpret a t i o n of the Bible's teachings. It's not right to hate the Bible because of how others misconstrue it, though I can see why you might. I hope that you change your mind about reading it someday.
Bands like Evanescence only exist so that we may weed out all of the stupid people.
I won't say that the Bible is the only source of truth, but I am one of those people who believe that Christianity is the ONLY true religion. Actually, thinking back, I'm not sure I can think of anything that would be a source of truth, but I'm sure some of you people can think 'em up.
@Phoenix: The Bible says to love the sinner, but hate the sin. I try to follow that command. |
i don't think i would ever read the bible cause growin' up people would try and force there beliefs and what the bible says.people have called me an abomination and called my life a sin and everytime i would ask them why they think that they would say because the bible says it is.so i don't have a very good inpression of the bible or religion for that matter.
but then again, I try to find life lessons in everything, and I tend to use other sources and the Bible. I'm not ignoring it, but I don't use it as the ONLY source of truth.
that's another thing I have, especially when people try to push that the Bible is the ONLY source of truth. there's truth in everything. |
I believe that many religions have a common basic principle of discovering good and bad morals. I find the majority of differences lie in the concept of the superior being and how to worship him/her/it/t h e m ; in where to find wisdom and comfort; and in the rituals and practices.
the Bible has good stories. I don't take it too literally, but I find the meaning behind the passages, and try to apply it to my life. |
...enough of the Qu'ran to know what Allah commands his followers to do with "infidels". (Although I need to read it in its entirety still.)
@Phoenix: Yes, the parables aren't meant to be taken literally, but if you go on reading, Jesus usually explains their interpretati o n to the disciples, so you can still read the bible literally. And OMW nailed what I meant. And yes, Catholics are different in other areas, but that was just one difference I was pointing out.
@Verbal: I see where you're coming from, but the God of Christianity is very different from the god of Islam, is very different from the gods of Hinduism. And I've read... |
I believe everyone should read the Bible, because listening to other's interpretati o n s misses the point. It's basically a history book full of lessons. Listening to others tell you their interpretati o n s is like a photo copy of a photo copy; lots of stuff gets lost.
Before you blast Islam, read the Quoran (or Koran). The terrorists haven't because someone told them what was in it. Before you blast Scientology, ...uh...well go ahead. |
@Phoenix: I think Plague is saying that if you just read the Bible and ignore all the interpretati o n s it does not contradict itself. It's not the Bible that contradicts itself, it is man's interpretati o n of it.
@Plague: Spot on! Man does not need or can even use another man to talk to God. This another area I am at odds with the Catholic faith. |
Lol, the frothing at the mouth has started!
I'm guilty of saying all major religions are the same too, but let me explain. If you take the 10 Commandments (Jewish & Christian) to every religion they will agree that those are good things to live by, and if you don't you will be punished by a God-type entity, whether it's THE God, a good alien Mormon, Galactic Emperor, or a flying pasta demon thingie (LOL). |
ok
1.the bible shouldn't be taken literally.be c a u s e written in parables.the stories are to teach you life lessons.the stories aren't actually true. 2.Mormans,Sc i e n t o l o g y and Muslims have f**ked up beliefs. and 3.Catholics are different to other christian religions in my ways.for example we not only acknoledge God,Jesus and the Holy Ghost we also acknoledge Mother Mary. |

Oh, or better yet, the minor disagreement s . Maybe we should go on missions, or maybe we should minister to our neighbors. Or here's one, how about we tell them that they will convert, or we'll cut their heads off and fly airplanes into some of their national monuments in the name of Allah? Religions are by no way anywhere even remotely near exactly the same, and the minor disagreement s are actually rather major. |
@ekarmazi6: "Religions which are for the most part exactly the same". Totally, I fully agree that the monotheism of Judeaism is almost exactly the same as the polytheism of Hinduism. I also fully agree that the Mormon belief that if you work hard enough you get your own planet to be god of when you die. Oh, and did I mention Xenu of the Scientologis t s ? Or how about The Flying Spaghetti Monster of Pastafariani s m ? (Yeah, that religion exists.)
@Phoenix: If you take the bible literally, it tends to not contradict itself.
@Fangirl: That is one of the areas where Christianity and Catholicism differ. Catholics tend to believe that a priest should be the mediator between them and God, whereas fundamentali s t s believe that Christ is mediator between them and God, and therefore human mediation is unnecessary, and confessions can be made directly through prayer. |
enough religion please. this area should be about this ARTIST not any of the religions which are for the most part exactly the same. execpt some minor disagreement s
I understand that, but my community has the rituals as the most important thing. that's what I am annoyed with.
and I hate to send anyone into hysterics, but I find the "confession" sacrament to be more of making one look good. like you robbed someone and everyone will think you're doomed for hell until you confess to a priest. it's not always true, maybe a priest is all some people have, but I feel that I can pray to God and fix the issue with those involved. but my community begs to differ. |
i don't think its important to read the bible because its contradicts itself.i've heard so many different interpretati o n s of what it supposedly says.
melanie, read i n g one of your earlier comments i saw what you think about christianity and religion in general. Can i say that being a christian isnt abo9ut "rituals" its about believing in a god that sent his son to die on a cross to forgive us of our sin yes it is important to pray and read your bible but its not a "oh you have to pray before lunch and you have to say this and do that and repeat shabalabalba while you pray and blah blahblah blahblah blah'
the golden rule and the ten commandments are the only big rules I stick to. they're challenging enough. lol
and the majority of moral and just rules are based off them anyway. |
