Cat Power
Biography
Cat Power was the alias of Chan Marshall, a Southern-bred singer/songwriter whose father, Charlie, was an itinerant pianist. After dropping out of high school, Marshall found herself in New York; performing under the name Cat Power, she was booked as the opening act for Liz Phair, where she met Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley and Two Dollar Guitar's Tim Foljahn, who agreed to become her backing band. Following the release of 1995's Dear Sir and 1996's Myra Lee -- both recorded on the same day -- Cat Power signed to Matador for 1996's What Would the Community Think?, which won acclaim for Marshall's unsettling, emotional songs and cathartic vocals.
The superb Moon Pix followed two years later, and in the spring of 2000 Cat Power resurfaced with The Covers Record. Released in 2003, You Are Free featured a lusher, more polished sound as well as cameos by Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder; 2006's The Greatest was recorded in Memphis, TN, with legendary soul players including guitarist/songwriter Mabon "Teenie" Hodges, bassist Leroy "Flick" Hodges, and drummer Steve Potts. Another set of covers, Jukebox, was released two years later. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

I, too, am puzzled at the use of the past tense in the review. She ain't dead, folks, and she hasn't quit performing/r e c o r d i n g under the moniker "Cat Power."

I learn about this woman a few days ago and i'm hooked up. She such a great singer and her melancolic voice... I'm in love with music again. If u like her U'll like Sondre Lerche a Singer from norway.

I absolutely am hooked on Cat Power. My husband surprised me w/Jukebox and I was blown away with the NY, NY song and of course her original stuff is amazing. The blues tune "God bless the children..." gives me chills, you really feel the soulfulness of her delivery. Chan is the real deal, she is true and real and compassionat e . I would love to see her live!

Heard her on the Handsome Boy Modeling School track I've Been Thinking which is just incredible.

Dig this. Like you said Kelly, sorta Billy Holiday. Kind of a Morphine-ish groove to it too

dear sir and what would the community think are great but so is the greatest and the covers record is a classic....

Anyone else listened to Werewolf on You are Free? Yowza! Michael Hurley wrote it ages ago, but she surely turns it inside out and does it justice.

Her voice makes me want to melt into the speakers, kind of like melted chocolate in ones' hand, a low - down beat - tempo song that had my mind stop and reflect on nothing at all, and with todays' issues that is important. Thank you for putting me at ease.

Cat Power is amazing - I don't get calling her "sad" over and over. Sure, she has songs of love, loss, and angst, but what female artist worth her salt doesn't? Life is a series of ups and downs, and her music reflects all of it. The Greatest and Jukebox are very uplifting to me. She is one of the few artists that can take a song with an absolute feel, and make it her own. The true treat is seeing her live, though. Like a beautiful female Joe Cocker, she really expresses her music with her body.

yes, peter, that's the perfect way to describe this woman. she's a total badass! there was an awesome rolling stone article about her within this past year, and she sounds pretty cool. and she's hot too!

||
I heard her live for the first time at Roskilde this year and I ma very glad. I've been following her career for a long time, but not many independent artists make it to Copenahgen.

Seriously, you know what's hard to do? Follow up Sufjan Stevens' "Sleeping Bear Sault Saint Marie." But that's just what you've done, Cat Power, with a beautiful yarn named "Willie." Booyah.
