Chevelle
Biography
Inspired by the lurching riffs of Helmet and the soft/loud vocal styling of Tool, Chicago-based trio Chevelle's aggressive, heavy sound is all about mounting tension exploding into raw guitar bursts. Formed in 1995, Chevelle comprised brothers Sam (drums), Pete (vocals, guitar), and Joe Loeffler (bass), the last of whom joining up after he played better than the gang's original bassist. They started out playing parties and outdoor events, which quickly led to bookings at Chicago clubs when youngest member Joe was just 14. In 1999, Chevelle released their Steve Albini-produced debut album, Point #1, on Squint Entertainment. Three years later -- and following tours with bands like Filter, Sevendust, Powerman 5000, and Machine Head -- the band had inked a deal with Epic and issued Wonder What's Next, released in August 2002. The album went platinum by the next summer and their second single, "Send the Pain Below," was a number one hit on modern rock and mainstream radio. Main stage dates with the annual Ozzfest tour followed that summer, and 2003 brought a concert album, Live from the Road. Chevelle returned in the fall of 2004 with their third full-length, This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In), and with it came another hit song, "Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)." Joe parted ways with his brothers in July 2005, and though he was replaced on bass a month later by Dean Bernardini, Chevelle remained a family affair, since Bernardini was their brother-in-law. With the new member came a newfound energy and optimism that replaced the internal bickering of the past, and the guys carried that spirit into the recording of their next album, April 2007's Vena Sera. ~ Tracy Frey, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
I have all their albums, starting with Point 1, which is an okay album. The next three shown here on pandora are simple great. Wonder What's Next was a huge step up from their 1st album. Another step up to This Type Of Thinking and Vena Sera which are very close to each other, in my mind its hard to say whether one is better. I guess Vena Sera is newer so it may have some edge but what I like about these guys is I never get sick of their music, no matter how often I listen.

Chevelle is one of the best bands out there...they rock harder than any rock band now in my opinion...
This is my favorite band. Their loud guitar riffs from nowhere are their trademark, absolutely breathtaking . They hardly have any bad songs.

Chevelle is awesome, and they're great live, too.
I don't know why they don't have Point #1 on discography. |
chevelle is on amazing fking band along with breaking benjamin and 10 years

Chevelle is an awesome band live. Anyone who listens to both Tool and Chevelle can hear the influence, just as they mention the Helmet influence. These bands cannot be compared by any stretch of the imagination. They are both good at what they do. Danny Carey is an octopus on the drums...sure , but is Tool especially catchy or accessible? Not really as far as mainstream goes. And yes, I realize that's by choice. I'm sure the Loefflers could go Prog if they wished, but it's not their thing
i agree with robinwell. a band can get inspiration from a band, and that doesnt mean they are copying them. tool and chevelle are two different bands, and i think both of them rock.
I have not been a big Chevelle fan, but Vena Sera is a good album. Their best by far. I guess I am a new fan. For those who don't like Tool. I think you should listen again. They have, arguably, the best drummer of all time, and one of the most inventive song writers of all time. Don't like the sound, but respect the talent.
Its the same style as Tool... Chevelle isn't imitating tool or emulating them in anyway. Some music just sounds similar. Tool is great and Chevelle is amazing.
Chevelle can't be compared to tool. Chevelle just isn't in the same league as tool.
I think you are all getting too worked-up over the Tool thing and comparing the two. They list Tool as an inspiration. His singing style definitely can sound much like Maynard's at times, but these two bands are very different in their musical stylings. Chevelle mostly uses the proven formula of progressions of melody-choru s that work for most bands. This may be why some of you prefer A Perfect Circle over Tool, as Maynard uses more of the previous mentioned formula in that band.

Love the band as much as I love the car. There is nothing better than blasting send the pain below in the most bad a** muscle car of 1970.
so i like chevelle and all, but am i the only one who finds it funny to compare a christian band to tool? i mean i can see where they are getting the instrumental and vocal similarities , but other than that, the lyrics are polar opposites
Anyone who thinks these guys are better than Tool are nuts. I suppose they're okay but shouldn't be compared to Tool.
Chevelle is way better then Tool and Tool is just a bunch of Tools who suck.
Funny... I'd rather listen to these guys than Tool.
And I'd rather listen to A Perfect Circle over Tool too. |
I like them..i think they rock kinda like Breakin benjamin or seether, whic h i'm a HUGE fan of...but Tool? theres only one tool dude
Its OK!!! I wouldn't even mention them in the same breath as TOOL!!!!!!! I bought one of there cds and you can tell they are a little commercial. Don't think they are more then they are. Average Band who stole Tools style and whored it out.
their cds aren't like tools where u can listen to em straight through, but they still aren't bad as a whole, its hard to be compared to the likes of tool and carry yourself accordingly
