Filter
Biography
Richard Patrick (vocals, guitars, bass, programming, drums) and Brian Liesegang (programming, guitars, keyboards, drums) both experimented with electronics early in their careers. Patrick was a member of the original touring incarnation of Nine Inch Nails. After NIN finished their lengthy first tour in the early '90s, Patrick and Liesegang met through a mutual friend and began to record industrial rock together. Their debut album, Short Bus, released on Reprise in 1995, was recorded by the two at a small house on the outskirts of Cleveland. Short Bus became a surprise hit, thanks to the MTV and alternative radio hit "Hey Man, Nice Shot"; by the end of the summer, the album had reached gold status. In order to tour behind the record, the duo recruited guitarist Geno Lenardo, bassist Frank Cavanaugh, and drummer Matt Walker. Liesegang departed in 1997 over creative differences, but Patrick retained the Filter name for 1999's Title of Record, which eventually went platinum and spawned another radio/MTV hit in the single "Take a Picture." The album also included new drummer Steve Gillis after Walker left to work with the Smashing Pumpkins. Filter's third album, The Amalgamut, followed three years later, after which the band went on a bit of a hiatus. Around 2005, Patrick announced the formation of a new band, Army of Anyone, which he created with former members of Stone Temple Pilots and David Lee Roth's touring band. However, Patrick did not abandon his original band -- Filter returned in 2008 with Anthems for the Damned. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
Short bus was a good album. This band does something very unique in Concert; good way to test and see if you have really seen them.

I really only like Short Bus.
But that album I like Alot, its awesome, edgy, off key |

hey jvbal, i respect your opinion but have to completely disagree even though i do agree with karuspex on the part of the band leaning more and more to the water down fm friendly direcction after short bus with such hits as take a picture. yuck. but hits like american cliche completely make up for it

the lyrics to Cancer are a wake up call!!soooo true of how this earth is going to hell in a handbag!
I really like this group and have for a long time!!you have to listen to more than what they play on the radio to appreciate this group.. |
what ever manduke. have you even heard any of there other songs besides 'nice shot'? probably not.
hit or miss music but there a are a few golden nuggets in there, such as welcome to the fold, trip like i do, american cliche, and one other i forgot.

I admire Richard Patrick, what he overcame w/ the booze, etc. He was and still is teh hott. "Take A Picture" is one of the songs I'd take with me on a desert island. I just love his voice.

I enjoy listening to Filter. I seen them live in Jacksonville , FL in May '08. They are really good live. I had an aweful lot of fun. The energy was electric.
Filter is a pretty good band. The short bus cd got kinda repetative but it was still good. They were a good filler band that added more to the grunge and Electric sounds of the time.
so everybody's a crittic but none of you make good or any music out for us to hear so if you got nothing constuctive to write why dont you make your own one hit wonder fall off the face of the earth
I disliked them at first, then they released that "I wanna take your picture" song and it quickly escalated from there. I'm tired of band members getting booted from a band and going on to start another abortion of a band. You were released for a reason. Retire and enjoy your royalties.

mikefd: Most of the words used by jvbal are vocab words learned in highschool. Nothing like insulting your own intelligence , or lack there of. Next time, try not to waste others time by having them read your senseless opinions of someone else's perfectly written comments regarding an artist. Actually, his opinion means a hell of lot more than yours. You actually owe me the part of my life I wasted reading your childish comments. Be sure to wash your foot before you stick it in your mouth.

good to see filter back at it, well, richard patrick anyways... Saw them with STP this summer and they were on point!

My fave song by Filter? The version of "Where Do We Go from Here" that you have to use a computer to listen to. I like it better than the CD version. I haven't heard it in so long, though, cuz I don't have it...

Thats funny, I think Title of Record is their best work. The Amalgamut has a few GREAT songs on it but isn't cohesive enough as an album to be stellar. Short bus is of course awesome. Anthems for the damned is such a disappointme n t . I hope it turned out like Patrick wanted it to though.

I actually thought jvbal summed up Filter pretty well. Their debut disk was their best work. Everything else after that was sterilized, watered-down FM radio music. Don't come down on someone just because they have a vocabulary and like to capitalize and punctuate their sentences. It just makes you look like a tool.

Everytime I hear "Hey Man Nice Shot" I picture Jim Carey in his tight little basketball shorts getting ready to ball on some poor unsuspecting dudes.
wow, jvbal sounds like a f**king record exec that got canned then went into the internet to get his jollies by throwing expensive words around and tricking us into actually thinking his opinion means a s**t. by the by, jvbal will probably turn out to be a woman, but just insert her for his and she for he and it applies to any sex you may be. congrats on the english major man, its nice to know that you are aces when it comes to throwing around bullshit terms and phrases.

Short Bus was amazing, but this hard-hitting and powerful band quickly went downhill, eschewing the raw emotion-lade n hits from Short Bus with sappy and formulaic pop-rock for their second two albums. Short Bus is a must listen but Title of Record is mediocre and The Amalgamut is a real travesty.
