Flaw
Biography
A quintet from Louisville, KY, Flaw aims at creating relevance and lively meaning to the nu metal scene, using it as the foundation for dynamic, hard-driven music. The core of Flaw pulled together in 1996 when Jason Daunt placed an ad for a guitarist and Chris Volz answered. Volz's adoptive mother, an opera singer who had performed at the Kennedy Center, had helped develop his musical talent. After she committed suicide when Volz was 12, he spent years in various types of psychotherapy, gaining insights that bypass most people. It was from this experience that Volz shaped his personal style of lyrics, expressing how one gets through inner turmoil and hurts. Songs such as "Inner Strength," "Whole" (a song about his mother's death), and "Only the Strong" reflect his inner growth.
Originally calling themselves F. Law, the group decided it was more open than the name implied, that everyone and everything has flaws. Thus, they dropped the period and became Flaw. In 1997, Ryan Jurhs (five-string bass, background vocals) joined with Volz and Daunt, while the rest of the lineup kept revolving. Jurhs had just finished his stint with the Marines and was joining the music scene. Within a few weeks, Flaw recorded their first indie record, American Arrogance. Two of the eight tracks, "Amendment" and "Reliance," are also on the band's official debut album, Through the Eyes. The indie record opened the door for Flaw to open for bands such as Econoline Crush and Fear Factory. The band put out two more independent records, Flaw in 1998 and Drama EP in 2000, both of which were well-received. Flaw's lineup firmed up in 1999 when Chris Ballinger (drums) and Lance Arny (guitar) came aboard. Arny tended toward being a technical player, while Daunt went for the impromptu odd sounds, and Volz aimed his lyrics at the healing process in life and childhood. The combination worked.
In 2000, Flaw showcased at CBGB in New York where Republic/Universal heard them and signed them up. With David Bottrill (who had taken Tool and Peter Gabriel to the top) as their producer, Flaw began recording at Sound City in Los Angeles in early 2001. Republic/Universal released Flaw's official debut album, Through the Eyes, in October 2001 in both clean and explicit versions. While the album had a hint of the Tool influence, the uniqueness of Flaw remained solid and the album received rave reviews. ~ Eleanor Ditzel, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
Chris has since gained back control of the Flaw site and is vowing to continue to make Flaw Music. There are a few rough demos available for streaming at their myspace.

In several of Flaw's songs, the vocals are reminiscent of a cello. Kinda strange, but AMAZING.
If you look at Flaw's myspace page, j.daunt is totally ripping Chris calling him a drunk and a deadbeat even going as far as to comment on Chris' personal life (ex-wife and kids) and I personally do not give a s**t how upset you are with your friend and bandmate you never pull crap like that. I have been following this band since the very beginning and have been their number one fan but now I have to be the one to announce that Flaw is nomore, its over. There is a 0% chance of continuing.

I love flaw and will always be a huge fan..... I cant wait for some new stuff although their previous two lp's flippin rock!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! I cant wait to see these guys again for the 12th time
lead singer kinda sounds like the guy from mudvayne. come to think of it so does this whole band, and thats a damn good thing!!
Some interesting guitar work, completely smothered over by nu metal tropes. It's a pity, because there's so much potential underneath the predictable chord progressions and auto-tuned vocals.

However I left the show that night truly believing that I might have just saw them for the last time. Number one the current line up is not even a shadow of the original lineup,I think Terry is a great guy but his drumming is mediocre at best. Number two is that Chris has got to be more professional if he really wants to salvage the Band. The fight with the Displaced guy is a prime example of why you do not bring your gf or wife on the road. J. Daunt and Chris need to reunite and revive 'FLAW'.

Chris told me that the new record would hit shelves sometime in early '09, but that time has come and gone I imagine they had a few setbacks as they were still label shopping at the time I was hanging out with them.after Flaws set Chris ran out the door and grabbed one of Displaced's guys in a arm lock I guess the dude said something to Chris' lady and it set him off. I was kind of happy to see that he is just as real as his music leads you to believe, however interested labels probably disagree

Chris' moms suicide didn't make him a better musician but it definitly feeds his anger and allows him to write out of pure emotion. The songs he writes comes out of first hand experience, he is not just another wannabe writing songs about a life they know nothing about. I actually had the pleasure of seeing them (Chris being the only original member remaining) back in november at Rockstars in Ft.Myers and the guy can still tear a stage up. The opening bands were 'the dreaming' and displaced.

just plain...gooo d . . . m a k e s me want to break things...Kic k a**!!

Chris Volz is known for being the lead singer of Flaw and Five.Bolt.Ma i n . This is his solo project after the break up of Flaw and Five.Bolt.Ma i n . Recent news is that Flaw has regrouped.

Chris Volz is very good and so is Flaw. If you like them check out Five Bolt Main as well. Ill give you f**king profanity
Its heavy metal, most bands use profanity, if you dont like it dont listen to it! As far as the comment from maxwell, I'm sure you have never had anything tragic happen in your life so you wouldnt know what someone goes through. What gives you the right to judge their music based on a personal triumph? Flaw stands apart from so many bands, and just the fact that they are back together and putting out a new album shows that they can stand against all the one hit wonders. Cheers to Flaw!
just because the guys mother commited suicide doesnt mean their music is any better. they sound like many other bands but worse
Lamc25, judging from the band art and the fact that Through The Eyes is an (Explicit) album, I'm guessing, no.
It's decent music though... ***This Band Uses Profanity In Its Lyrics*** |
Not too shabby. I like it. Will keep an eye out for the NEW stuff. It's got a good driving metal tinge....... w i t h some Rap vox. Nice!
theyre good. but the singer kinda sounds wierd like hes constipated or something
I totaly agree with Gabriel. When I first heard FLAW I was amazed. Can't wait for the new ambum!

I just learned that Flaw are currently working on a follow up to 'Endangered Species' which has me smiling uncontrollab l y . If you do not own their first 2 albums go get them now. Flaw's music is so important, it reflects the neglect and inner pain some of us feel but instead of creating music that wallows in sarrow Chris encourages you to get on with getting on and move past the pain. Flaws music is for us who actually know what hard times are, not stuck up rich kid phonies. FLAW RULES 4-LIFE
Flaw are the most underrated band to hit a stage, their music is so much more than most people know. Chris's mom committing suicide when he was a kid has fueled 2 albums of pure brilliance. They disbanded after 'Endangered speicies' to my dissappointm e n t but Chris has made an album with 'Five bolt Main' and recently released his solo record, both good but neither touching the Flaw Albums, they are among my favorite records of all time. Hopefully they reunite, I miss seeing them live.
Through the eyes is a totaly awesome album, I hope the album they are working on right now is as good as it.
these mother f**kers are awesome..
they are past due for something new though.. does anyone know what their status is. |
flaw rules. dude has an awesome voice. Even live. I was able to see them live in Wichita, KS and it rocked
