A Flock Of Seagulls
Biography
As well-known for their bizarrely teased haircuts as their hit single "I Ran (So Far Away)," A Flock of Seagulls were one of the infamous one-hit wonders of the new wave era. Growing out of the synth-heavy and ruthlessly stylish new romantic movement, A Flock of Seagulls were a little too robotic and arrived a little too late to be true new romantics, but their sleek dance-pop was forever indebted to the short-lived movement. The group benefitted considerably from MTV's heavy rotation of the "I Ran" video in the summer of 1982, but they were unable to capitalize on their sudden success and disappeared nearly as quickly as they rocketed up the charts.
Hairdresser Mike Score (lead vocals, keyboards) formed A Flock of Seagulls with his brother Ali (drums) and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass) in 1980, adding guitarist Paul Reynolds several months later. The group released its debut EP on Cocteau Records early in 1981, and while the record failed to chart, its lead track, "Telecommunication," became an underground hit in Euro-disco and new wave clubs. The band signed a major-label contract with Jive by the end of the year, and their eponymous debut album appeared in the spring of 1982. "I Ran (So Far Away)" was released as the first single from the album, and MTV quickly picked up on its icily attractive video, which featured long shots of Mike Score and his distinctive, cascading hair. The single climbed into the American Top Ten, taking the album along with it. In the U.K., "I Ran" didn't make the Top 40, but "Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)" reached number ten later that year; in America, that single became a Top 40 hit in 1983, after "Space Age Love Song" peaked at number 30. "Wishing" was taken from the group's second album, Listen (1983), which was moderately successful.
However, the band's fortunes crashed shortly after the release of Listen as 1984's The Story of a Young Heart failed to produce any hit singles. Reynolds left after the album and was replaced by Gary Steadnin; the band also added keyboardist Chris Chryssaphis. The new lineup was showcased on 1986's Dream Come True, which failed to chart. Shortly after its release, the band broke up. Mike Score assembled a new lineup of A Flock of Seagulls in 1989, releasing the single "Magic" and touring the U.S.A. The band failed to make any impact and most of the members left by the end of the year. The band continued to tour worldwide, although with major changes to its members, and in 1996 released a new album, The Light at the End of the World. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
Although not a bad band, the guitar work of Paul Reynolds, made this band.

make fun of them if you want, but the sound is classic and the guitar work by Paul is outstanding. . . almost haunting at times

My friend picked up a Story of a Young Heart record way back when on clearance somewhere and I still think it's great. Of course I only have a cassette tape copy. I don't even own a record player anymore.

So they look like goobers...
The guitar playing soars. |
LOL. these guys played at a 6 mile road race through central park NYC a few years back. they just kept playing "I Ran" over and over and over for the whole race.

I emailed support@pand o r a . c o m to let them know. I email them anytime I see a bio or album art error.
This "biography" has nothing to do with the original band. What gives?
This song makes you open your window and CRANK it up (the volume that is)!!!
Their first album was very tight as far as rhythms go,especiall y if you like syncopatated rhythms and chords. Grat bass lines and chords. Sorry they were short lived but they still made their mark.
This isn't a flock of seagulls. wtf. They had a much better biography before but not it is gone. email pandora and tell them. I love space age love song and i ran. both great songs
Fez singing "I Ran" in a flashforward on "That's 70s Show" is one of my favorite highlights from that series.
I could have sworn FOS had a more detailed biography than this. Oh well. I also like Space Age Love Song, and Nightmares. There's nothing wrong with being a one hit wonder in America. Who knows, maybe they're making some serious bucks over in Asia somewhere.

James: Too poppy to listen to? I'm not sure what your standard of "poppy" is, but the entire "Listen" album is tremendous and every bit on the level of the first so I assume that's not the record you're referring to. It's great, and shamefully under-rated.

"Modern Love is Automatic" should have been a big MTV and radio hit, and was not. Who knows how hits are picked.
I Ran = 80's MTV.
It's been all downhill for MTV since then. RIP |
A Flock of Seagulls seems like a bizarre love child of Pink Floyd and consumerism. Their first album is the only really fantastic one and it is underrated! The whole thing is a concept album about some guy who loves an alien. The rest of their stuff is way to poppy to even be listened to.
Wishing from Listen is also a good song with some air play though not considered a "hit".
No didn't make sense but whateva... I Ran was the only song i liked by them.
i don't like the video games much at all! |
Flock of Seagulls does have another song to go with "I Ran" and that is: "Space Age Love Song" - Try that one out if you really like "I Ran" but don't care about the rest. I feel it is just as brilliant and memorable.
BTW was happy to see them as a 13 year old in 1983... The Fixx opened for them in Albuquerque NM, my first concert ever. |
it is my understandin g that Bill Nelson discovered them (he did produce a single)...th a t alone is enough to prove they had something besides hair...i saw them open for the police...w/t h e fixx...great bill...not a great live stadium band...but damn...they were good...oh my fave...remem b e r david...

I was stationed at the Naval Base in Philadelphia , P A . from 1988 to 1990 and I saw them live in 1989 and Mike Score walked the aisles shaking hands with the people ,I was one of those lucky people! :)
I totally enjoyed the "new" songs they had ,but never knew until now why I never ever found an album with those songs on it. :( |
