Foo Fighters
Biography
While he was drumming with Nirvana, Dave Grohl was recording original songs at home that never received public release. Those tapes would become the foundation of Foo Fighters, the band he formed in 1995, after the death of Kurt Cobain. Like Nirvana, Foo Fighters melded loud, heavy guitars with pretty melodies and mixed punk sensibilities with a sharp sense of pop songwriting.
Dave Grohl began playing guitar and writing songs in his early teens, as well as performing with a variety of hardcore punk bands. In the late '80s, when he was still in his teens, he joined the Washington, D.C.-area hardcore band Scream as their drummer. During the final days of Scream, Grohl began recording his own material in the basement studio of his friend Barrett Jones. Some of Grohl's songs appeared on Scream's final album, Fumble. After Scream's 1990 summer tour, Grohl joined Nirvana and moved to Seattle.
After Nirvana recorded Nevermind, Grohl went back to the D.C. area and recorded a handful of tracks that would appear on Pocketwatch, a cassette released by Simple Machines. For most of 1992 he was busy with Nirvana, but when the band stayed off of the road, he recorded solo material with Jones, who had moved to Seattle. The pair kept recording throughout early 1993, when Grohl returned to Nirvana to record In Utero. Grohl had toyed with the idea of releasing another independent cassette in the summer of 1993, but the plans never reached fruition. Following Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994, the drummer kept quiet for several months. In the fall of 1994, booking time in a professional studio, Grohl and Jones recorded the album that became Foo Fighters' debut album in a week. Boiling down his backlog of songs to about 15 tracks, Grohl played all of the instruments on the album. He made 100 copies of the tape, passing it out to friends and associates. In no time, Grohl's solo project became the object of a fierce record company bidding war.
Instead of embarking on a full-fledged solo career, Grohl decided to form a band. Through his wife he met Nate Mendel, the bassist for Sunny Day Real Estate. Shortly before the pair met, Jeremy Enigk, the leader of Sunny Day Real Estate, had converted to Christianity and quit the band, effectively ending the group's career. Not only did Mendel join Grohl's band, but so did Sunny Day's drummer, William Goldsmith; former Germs and Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear rounded out the lineup. The band, named Foo Fighters after a World War II secret force that allegedly researched UFOs, signed a contract with Capitol Records. The band's self-titled debut, consisting solely of Dave Grohl's solo recordings, was released on July 4, 1995. It was an instant success in America, as "This Is a Call" garnered heavy alternative and album rock airplay. By early 1996, the album was certified platinum in the U.S.
Throughout 1996, Foo Fighters supported the album with an extensive tour, enjoying a crossover hit with "Big Me" that spring. Late in the year, the group began recording their second album with producer Gil Norton. During the sessions, William Goldsmith left the band due to creative tensions, leaving Grohl to drum on the majority of the album. Before the record's release in the spring of 1997, Goldsmith was replaced by Taylor Hawkins, who had previously drummed with Alanis Morissette. The Colour and the Shape, Foo Fighters' second album and the first they recorded as a band, was issued in May of 1997. Smear left the group in the wake of the album's completion, and was replaced by guitarist Franz Stahl, whose stay proved short-lived; 1999's There Is Nothing Left to Lose was recorded as a three-piece, with ex-No Use for a Name guitarist Chris Shiflett signing on soon after. One by One, the group's most polished production, appeared in late 2002, followed by 2005's In Your Honor, which narrowly missed the top of Billboard's album chart. After releasing a live album titled Skin and Bones in 2006, the band returned to Norton's studio and started constructing a dozen fractured and eclectic rock songs to be released in 2007 under the name Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

answering a question from a while down, i dont really like wheels that much. i agree with love, lisa. it doesnt really sound like the foos we all know and love. it sounds....ho w do i say this...im not sure. just weird. its not horrible, but its not great.
i have to disagree with fuzzyrosco, though. i think that they picked a pretty good selection for the greatest hits album. most of their best stuff is on there. |

Every local band in a bar has played a Foo Fighters song, and if he wanted to distance himself, he shouldn't have kept bringing it up every time he was on TV. Face it, it was a sure thing to connect them as much as possible, because people like jonnybomm down there will like them and buy CDs just for that reason. He had already decided to not like the music, then changed his mind as soon as he found out Grohl was in Nirvana, and now loves them.
He had the stage set. All the songs were writen, he even had a band lined up. Only one thing was in the way of him stealing the lime light, Kurt. That's why he killed him.

If you're looking for a good, fun to listen to band with a bunch of solid songs, Foo Fighers is for you.Verbal absolutely couldn't be more wrong. First off, Dave grohl tried his hardest to Distance himself from Nirvana after Cobain's death, and his characteriza t i o n of Dave couldn't be further from the truth. He seems blinded by fast, flashy drumming and "edgy, new" stuff. Nirvana was not edgy just a marketable version of many great bands in seattle, And Cobain was a third rate songwriter.
I like the foo fighter and there are some great songs they have. I love the cord changes and the transitions into the bridge. They are very talented, there is a bunch of mediocre stuff to sift through to get to the gold, but there is gold in them there hills!
Aside from that, I gave them a shot and found them to be mediocre. Elevator music for my generation. Quite disappointin g after all the effort into connecting it to Nirvana, which was edgy and new. As far as drumming goes, he might be good for a pop band, but nothing compared to most heavy metal drummers. Not impressed, sorry.
The problem is when he released the 1st album he used Nirvana to promote it. I remember the radio and TV was saturated with "Nirvana member Dave Grohl is releaseing new CD" and "When I was playing in Nirvana I was writing music", etc. There was no way for him to talk about Foo Fighters without shoving Nirvana in your face, and when all those Nirvana albums came out after Cobain died, they were all tied to Grohl and Foo Fighters.

Yeah, it's good, but there's nothing special about it. Has anyone else seen the list of songs for Greatest Hits? I'm kinda disappointed by the selection.
Any opinions on the new release "Wheels" ? Doesn't sound like them at all to me.

cool conspiracy theory. It is a bit probably too. Just enough to entertain. But realisticall y , c'mon, they did not conspire that stuff.
Foo Fighters are pretty awesome. Sooo many good songs came out of them. |
Grohl and Courtney conspired to kill Kurt. They worked out a deal where Grohl would steal the lime light by making this band at the height of Nirvana's popularity. Courtney just wanted the money and the rights to his songs.
They got together, tied up Kurt then injected him with lots of drugs before they blew his head off. They knew few would question the murder because of Kurts talk of suicide. The perfect crime. |
ha ha...laughin g at Jay's comment. I feel the same, anything he does as a drummer I dig. Once he's behind the mic, I could care less...I've already heard the greatest hits album, it's called the "radio"...
So these guys are the most popular band of the last fifteen years? I guess grunge is still alive.
Foo Fighters Greatest Hits, coming out in November. 14 years, 6 albums, it's definitely time.
ya i like nirvana and QOTSA, but won't listen to foo fighters.
what else has dave grohl been involved in? |
pagan.prisci l l a , speaking for me and me only-When I think of this band I don't think of that band. Grohl didn't need to "move on" from anything, he was making music before that band. He's a great drummer, love all the albums he drums on with any band. When I think of THIS band I think of bad music and a guy who's doing something he's not good at. Like the counter girl at a restaurant all of a sudden being a waitress. If she was a good waitress, she would have been a waitress already.
