Gamma Ray
Biography
Kai Hansen formed Helloween in 1984, playing guitar and singing on the speed-metal band's first four albums. He left in early 1989, however, and founded Gamma Ray with vocalist Ralf Scheepers (formerly with Tyran Pace). The duo intended to record a one-off project that Hansen originated while in Helloween, so they recruited bassist Uwe Wessel, drummer Matthias Burchardt and several other musicians. The album, Heading for Tomorrow, was released in 1990 and proved a hit with fans and critics, so much so that Hansen, Scheepers and Wessel decided to tour the album with added members Dirk Schlacter (guitar) and Uli Kusch (drums). During the tour the Heaven Can Wait EP was released. By 1991, Gamma Ray produced another album of new material, entitled Sigh No More. Following 1993's Insanity and Genius, vocalist Scheepers departed to try out for Judas Priest; he didn't get the gig, but opted to form a new band called Primal Fear rather than return to the fold, leaving Hansen to take over vocal duties on 1995's Land of the Free. Further recordings with Hansen as lead vocalist followed, including 1997's Somewhere Out in Space, 1998's Valley of the Kings, and 1999's Power Plant. Blast from the Past was released in 2000. Gamma Ray returned to a raging New Wave of British Heavy Metal style for 2001's No World Order, and followed that album with the live set Skeleton in the Closet. Gamma Ray returned in 2005 with Majestic, the release of which was accompanied by a world tour. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

To be fair, there are things about most* power metal vocalists that I find off-putting, but yet I overlook what would be a deal breaker in another genre because the overall end result is awesome, even if the vocals alone might have problems. It also helps that I essentially have them on 'shuffle', mixed in with all sorts of other musical genres.
*I do not include Kamelot in that category, ergo why I own 3 of their albums and will doubtless buy more. |

his voice kinda reminds me of kind diamond or dio grates on your nerves really quik
I have to say, Kai Hansen's vocals are okay in short bursts. I bought the album "Land of the Free II", and I got sick of it pretty quick. Although I do love "Afterlife", mainly for the initial feel and beat of the song, its grabs enough attention to make a devoted guitarist want to switch to drums...
first DF STINKS. second gamma ray ROCKS third Helloween and hammerfall are grate as well. forth no world order is the best album ever.
Great, great jams, Pandora! Keep feeding my head at keyWestRoXra d i O . . .

another great band that Helloween branched off into is Masterplan. check 'em out they are just as badass
i truly dont see y u ar all saying df is bad i think they rock i dont care if they use cpus they still sound good and so does gamma ray and hammerfall and alot more
I like about every power metal band ever besides half of Edguy/Gamma Ray's songs for some reason.
Just so anyone cares, Dragonforce is a suckers band... they even use computers to speed up their guitars!!! So don't listen to DF, and remember that you heard it here first!
Land of the Free II is a solid album. I personally think that Majestic is by far better overall. Gamma Ray is a great power metal band.
wow!!! if Epica did the Flash Gordon soundtrack instead of queen, this is what it would sound like!
I've just started listening to a lot of Power metal artists. Before it was just Dragonforce but i started listening to Edguy and Hammerfall. Good stuff.
I don’t even like Helloween but Gamma Ray is one of my favorite power metal bands on this earth.
Yeah...bette r than Helloween. No World Order is the only one that really impresses me though...ove r a l l , 3.5 out of 5.
Yes, Edguy is awesome. |
where's POWER PLANT"? the best albun ever!!! there's nothing more enjoyable to take a wild shower listening to send me a sing
absolutely splendiferou s
I also grew up listening to Helloween, and was shocked when i heard that Kai left, but I'm glad that Gamma Ray is together, a great band. And yea check out Edguy, and Rhapsody of fire.
if you like this band, and are looking for more like it, try angra and rapsody of fire
which makes them my favorite band
the only band i know of that can play that good on guitar and not turn into a generic screamer band, they keep their heads and play honest, too many bands i have heard that make 1 or 2 original albums then make all the rest sound pretty much the same, just with more deep screaming
i luv gamma, i just bought the discography, try real world and leaving hell on land of the free 2
Yeah, Gamma Ray is clearly a great power metal band. Helloween was great too. DF are insane and play music for the sake of playing it. Talented..ye s . Fun to listen to? Maybe. Gamma Ray are the kings of the this sub-genre.
Well, Kai is no slouch. I grew up in the 80's and Helloween was a heavily cliched, but talented band in a time dominated by hair metal. They got swept under the rug when hair metal ruined the scene. I'm greatful that we are rediscoverin g the guitar infused metal bands again. I apparently need to get some Edguy then...
I used to like Dragonforce but they start to sound the same in every song and give me a headache with the fast random notes. This band seems really cool so far. And yeah, Edguy rocks.
