Gov't Mule
Biography
The leaders of Gov't Mule, Warren Haynes and Allen Woody, should be well known to Allman Brothers fans for their stint in Southern rock's most famous native sons. In 1989 Haynes became the second replacement for Duane Allman, providing a good foil for Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts on guitar and vocals; Woody filled out the Allman sound on bass. Five years after their debut, the duo joined drummer Matt Abts in the side project Gov't Mule, a band in which the Allman Brothers' influence is apparent but complicated with the psychedelic, bluesy power trio feel of Cream.
Gov't Mule debuted in 1995 with a self-titled album on Capricorn Records, followed by the stellar concert date Live at Roseland Ballroom. The studio follow-up, Dose, appeared in early 1998; another concert set, Live...with a Little Help from Our Friends, followed a year later, with the complete show later appearing as a four-disc limited-edition set. A new studio effort, Life Before Insanity, appeared in early 2000. A vital member of the band was lost, however, on August 26, 2000, when Woody was found dead in a hotel room in New York City. The band had been preparing to record their next album, and after a time, Gov't Mule finally decided to carry on with the project, this time with guest bassists ranging from Flea to Bootsy Collins. The two-volume Deep End series for ATO Records resulted. Phish bassist Mike Gordon also got involved in the project, filming the recording of the albums for a planned documentary. In mid-September 2001, the group hit the road for a six-week tour in support of Deep End, Vol. 1; Oteil Burbridge filled in as bassist for most of the dates.
The second volume of Live...with a Little Help from Our Friends appeared in 2002 and the Deepest End: Live in Concert CD and DVD in 2003. One year later saw the release of Déjà Voodoo, Gov't Mule's first studio effort since Woody's death. It featured his official replacement, bassist Andy Hess, as well as new keyboardist Danny Louis. The same lineup released High & Mighty in 2006. The two-volume Benefit Concert series followed in 2007. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Gov't Mule's music does what it should, make you feel it from head to toe. This is the one band I can listen to and put the days worries behind me. Can't wait to see them at Wakarusa in June. As far as I am concerned any playlist is perfect.
My friend Karen and I are so excited that you're playing at the Mile High Music Festival in Denver!!! We just bought our tickets today...see you in July!!

As far as underrated goes- rock and roll hall of fame and #23 on Rolling Stones all time guitarist list- I'd like to see Mule on the cover- and I'd like to see Mule play the Crossroads Guitar Fest. I put him up with anybody but Jeff Beck and John Mclaughlin- but he might pass them before he's done. What the hell does he have to do to get a Rolling Stone cover- Allmans, now the Greatful Dead---What' s next reform Led Zep w/ Warren???
as a guitar player their power trio days were like school to me i have seen the band 136 times in all phases of the grup and they are the most intense band most people have most likely never heard
ROCK ON AND PLAY IT LOUD THEY DO!!!! |
I've been seeing Gov't Mule live since the power trio days with Allen Woody and I've never heard that version of the story of where they got the name. Jaimoe from the Allman Brothers Band was the first one who mentioned the phrase to Allen and Warren. Mule can be defined in a number of different contexts. Search the archives for interviews with the band for their version. Listen to the song "Mule" and check your American history books around the end of the Civil War for one interpetatio n .

They actually got their name from a WWII era vehicle that pulled B-52's onto the runway. Not much bigger than a golf cart these things could tow aircraft that weighed up to 480,000 lbs. They were deemed "unstoppable " . No doubt similar to Warren's relentless style of guitar play and tireless work ethic.
Probably one of the greatest bands most people have never heard of. |

I gotta say, I totally missed the boat on these guys back in the 90's due to my own prejudices. I just didn't think the world needed another Duane Allman style slide player and I thought they looked like a bunch of fat rednecks. Stoopid me. Rule number three folks, listen with your EARS!
Love their live recordings since I haven't had the chance to see them in concert yet. Banks of the Deep End makes my hair stand up. Please come to Summerfest '09!

I was introduced to Mule by my roommate when I lived in Nashville. I even got to see Allen play mandolin at a local bar one night, although I was not lucky enough to see Allen, Matt & Warren on stage together. My first Mule show was after that sad time. Ever since my first Mule show, I try not to miss a show if they are in my area! You must see them live!!!
asskickers and nametakers however more stage movement would add to their show

I saw them a couple yrs. ago in Mpls. at a outdoor benefit concert. AMAZING! Also on the bill was Deb Coleman, Indigenous, and Johnny Lang. At one point, toward the end of the concert, all were on the stage playing...Si m p l y incredible. Thanks Pandora for playing Gov't Mule......
I first heard them on XM and said, 'who the hell is THAT?' I now have all their CD's and listen to them regularly. They all ROCK maybe with the exception of Mighty High. That one's kind of strange with a raggae theme. Otherwise, get all their stuff. You won't regret it.

Anyone out there ever experienced guitarist "Joe Bonamassa"??
I suggest you do!! L.W. |

Having seen the mule I can tell you there concerts are great shows. They allow you to audio tape it but not video tape them.
Saw The Mule in Bozeman, MT with Grace Potter. It was the last show of the tour. It was one of the better concerts I've ever been to.
The last concert I went to was The Mule with Chris Robinson and his band New Earth Mud. I can die now. It was a five hour show that tore my heart to pieces. I'll never be the same. Thanks Warren!

Great band. I hadn't really heard much of them until I got on Pandora. Thanks for turning me on to them. I haven't heard a bad song yet.
First of peace & love to allen woody still miss you brother.
I wish the local radio stations would play the mule but they don't so they can go to hell. Warren is one great human being besides a great musician, so lucky to have a wonderful person like that in my lifetime! |
If there's anything better than Warren out there, please share, even anyone comperable.
