Hayley Westenra
Biography
Born in 1987, Hayley Westenra hails from New Zealand. Classically trained as both a singer and as a dancer, she is a former member of the New Zealand Royal Ballet. Westenra's voice is an operatic instrument and she has performed with the New Zealand Opera and Orchestra. She made her recording debut at the age of 14 with a self-titled collection that took her country by storm. Universal International then released Pure, an eclectic and very engaging set of pop, classical, and sacred songs, which exploded all over the globe. Westenra's voice is unusually suited to popular music because, unlike other classical singers, she doesn't resort to using vibrato technique. Instead, her delivery is extremely clean and full, hitting notes effortlessly and letting them draw out naturally.
While critics have unfortunately compared her to Charlotte Church, Westenra's interpretive gifts lie in the same terrain as singers such as Kate Bush on one side (whose "Wuthering Heights" was Pure's first single) and Barbra Streisand on the other. After the runaway success of Pure, Westenra and her family moved to London, and she began nearly nonstop world touring in support of her album. She has performed at the British Classical Awards, guaranteeing her success in the U.K. Pure was issued in the United States in April 2004, and the music video for "Wuthering Heights" has garnered considerable play on VH1, underscoring well-received performances in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C. In June 2004, Universal issued My Gift to You, a collection of Christmas and seasonal songs. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

I thought that this was a joke a few seconds into the first song I heard. I was dead wrong. This woman is phenomenal.

This 20 year old girl has an incredible voice. I look forward to her new releases.

Beautiful voice, beautiful girl!!! Let's hear more of her!!! I can't believe I have not heard of her before now. These comments date back to 02/08. Where was I? Thanks Pandora for bringing this wonderful talent to my attention.

Hayley's song "Prayer" takes my breath away. I probably would not have discovered it if not for Pandora. The Heart will rise above it all.
wow I almost started crying at work - she is pretty good to be able to envoke that much emotion. Plus I LOVE Pandora - If there was a portable version I would throw away my iPod
Anyone with a Wii, if you really like her music look into getting Endless Ocean. Her songs are featured as the 'diving' music. Sometimes I'll just leave the loading screen on for hours listening to "Prayer". Soo happy to find she has full albums. Need to go get them now.

What an amazing and beautiful voice and what an amazing and beautiful person. I am in love!! Ditto crowe.tek, Pandora is a blessing, and I too have found music that I love and would probably never have heard if it weren't for this resource. Thanks Pandora!!

Clean, clear, refreshing. I would have NEVER have found her if it was not for Pandora. In two days of Pandora listening, I have found more artists that I love and can't get enough of, than I have found in my entire life.

Amazing young talent. A pure and clear voice with little or no vibrato. When she reaches adulthood, more fullness and richness will undoubtedly ensue. Unfortunatel y , she is a dead ringer for a former love of mine fifty years ago!
Not really fond, but not disliking this genre, I find her voice very refreshing, clean and easy. It sounds so natural for her, not forced. I like this very much. I hope I don't have to listen to Barbara Streisand now when listening to her station..GHA A D Z O O K S that would be terrible.
This is good music, not the garbage most people listen to now.

Omg!I love her! When iTunes released her song as "the-free-si n g l e - o f - t h e - w e e k " her reviews skyrocketed. No matter who you are, or what type of music you like, Hayley has a song for you!
Dark Waltz is definatly my favorite song from her. This girl just gives me chills when she sings.... When she hits notes that should be impossible to hit, they're so... Pure.. Coincidence that's her 2nd album's name =). |
Absolutely enthraling, W o n d e r f u l listening. the world needs more from her.

I'm right by everyone else. Wow! I like Charlotte Church but there really is no comparison. She is leagues ahead of her in terms of clarity.
Pure is the perfec name for her album because her sound is so pure. It goes straight to the heart.

When I first heard her on "Celtic Woman - A New Journey", I honestly was not all that impressed. It wasn't until I heard her earlier solo works, here on Pandora, that I realized what a truly PHENOMENAL singer she really is. Both "Pure" and "Odyssey" are must-haves in any music lover's collection. Her talent really shines brightly on both albums. In my opinion, her work with Celtic Woman just doesn't do her justice.
BENITO...... . . . . . . . y o u are not alone. AG is one of my favorites but to have it performed with such perfection, such astounding, perfection defies description. I too get pretty misty-eyed. You gotta hear her sing Ave Maria!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!!!! ! ! ! !
Her voice is so amazing and clean and pure as said before. She sings this song beautifully.
I really enjoy hearing her clear strong voice. Few artists of any age in this genre have her talent. Thanks to Pandora for introducing her work to me.
She is a very gifted and talented artist for such a young lady. Beautiful relaxing music.
Very striking vocal ability, sounds incredibly fluid.
Grasshopper must be a Hobit and Lord of the Rings fan. I had an employee once who tried to talk like that, very interesting. |
Must admit to a instant, "I like that voice", as I did when I first heard Josh Groban...goo d luck young lady.
