High On Fire
Biography
Guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike, bass player George Rice, and drummer Des Kensel formed High on Fire in 1999, following the collapse of Pike's previous band, doom metal titans Sleep. But while Sleep had built their fame on impossibly slothful tunes and copious weed consumption, High on Fire's first release, The Art of Self Defense, displayed a far more aggressive though still fantasy-themed style of heavy metal. Released to mildly enthusiastic reviews, the album's prospects suffered from label Man's Ruin imminent bankruptcy, and it wasn't until High on Fire landed on grindcore powerhouse Relapse Records for their second album, 2002's devastating Surrounded By Thieves, that their abundant promise was rewarded. Extensive touring and an ever-increasing fan base followed, so that by the time they unleashed their third release, Blessed Black Wings, in early 2005 (introducing new bassist Joe Preston [ex-Thrones and Melvins]), High on Fire had earned their place as one of the most widely respected heavy metal outfits on the planet. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins. Never did I wanna be here again, And I don't remember why I came. Candles raise my desire, Why I'm so far away. No more meaning to my life, No more reason to stay. Freezing, feeling, Breathe in, breathe in... I'm coming back again... I'm not the one who's so far away When I feel the snake bite enter my veins. Never did I wanna be here again, And I don't remember why I came. |
To copy Willow - This here is "true" metal.
Except this time its actually true.... HOF f**king owns. |

my new favorite, matt pike rox, which album should i buy, since i've only listened to them on pandora>?
Well said, Baron. They rule but I'm not sure why Pandora put them up on my Power Metal Station.
Dude HOF rules over Converge.... . i dont know about that band yet......not really anywhere NEAR the mighty High On Fire or Mastodon.... . n e i t h e r is Dethklok for that matter.
Ill have to listen to alot more of all those guys cause that MASTODON DETHKLOK tour will be in SLC oct.9 So far CONVERGE is best.
Can't wait to see these guys with Dethklok and Mastodon... as long as I don't ship out before...
Listening to Return to Nod right now. This is the first song I've heard by them, and it's blowing my mind!
All the talk about HoF blowing away disturbed fans is wishful thinking. Not that it wouldn't, but disturbed fans are so tunnel visioned into their radio world that it would take a meteorite scale impact of HoF to get them to take notice, and then they would be too ignorant to understand the significance of such an event.
No disturbed for me thank you. I probably don't hate them as much as The Baron or firewhale, which is to say I wouldn't bend over backwards to change the channel were they to come up on the tuner. I would never buy or recommend any of their simple manufactured pop tunes either.
Like I said I'd still listen to them but they are by NO MEANS my favorite.
metalmidget. I get what you are saying & my opinion is certainly no more valid than anyone elses but Disturbed bug the sh*t out of me because they are trend jumpers getting famous on whatever's popular. Their guitarist, Dan Donegan was a shredder in a ridiculous hair band when that was popular and he was all nu-metal when that was popular, but oh, now he's hard rock. Whatever. Disturbed are capitalists, and there's nothing wrong with that, but one thing they are not and never were is METAL.
Yeah, when I was younger I was way into nu metal, and part of me is never gonna let that go. If Disturbed came out with a new album today, I'd probably go buy it...listen to it for a week...maybe two... then I'd put it down and get something by Electric Wizard.
metalmidget your cool, you like some awesome stuff. But part of Firewhales comment struck such a nerve with me because he did list disturbed, which I canNOT stand.Hate that band.I beleive they are everything thats bad in Metal, corporate,so f t and "catchy"whil e having that hard edge riff sound....ver y processed,fa k e and plastic....d e s i g n e d to appeal to the masses.High On Fire would make 99.9 % of the disturbed fans of the world PISS THIER PANTS in fear and awe of the heavybadassn e s s of thier sound.
For the record, disturbed is the only band you listed that I like. But even they would be pretty far down my list.
Firewhale, that is a f**king awesome name. You're right, in a way, while , disturbed etc. are bands I like, If someone asked me my favorite metal bands, they would be pretty far down on my list. So you're right in every aspect except that that stuff doesn't suck. At least not in my opinion. Hopefully I'm going to the same show as baron, gonna be mind-blowing !

CANT WAIT, CANT WAIT, CANT WAIT.
2 C EM WITH MASTODON ON oCT 3RD. |
These guys are motorhead on steroids. I've seen them seven times in Chicago and even spoke to Matt a couple of times.
firewhale.
You speak the absolute, metal truth. HOF is as good a metal band as you can find today. Period. This band is true, real metal. |
HoF sounds like Slayer and Motorhead had Satan's sodomy baby. If anyone tells you they like 'metal' and then list off 'metal bands' like, Disturbed, Staind, Godsmack, Puddle of Mudd, or whatever new flavor of the month is getting jizzed all over, sit them down in front of a huge stereo, turn up a High on Fire album to maximum volume, and don't let them move until they understand that all those other bands are steaming piles of excrement...
high on fire-saviour s - b o n d e d by blood-great new bands-and american too like me and you-a**holes . . .
This band has got to have the THICKEST RIFFS in all of heavy metal today. Thicker than Down......th a n Crowbar, than Kingdom Of Sorrow.
I love High On Fire. One of the very best American Metal Bands to come in a long, long.....LON G TIME! |
Good stuff! Check out "Sleep Holy Mountain" if you can. I had it on cassette tape. These guys are bang'n metal no matter what band they conjure!
Pretty good, sometimes I don't like the singer's voice. Mostly good though. Doom Metal rules.
