Howard Shore
Biography
Howard Shore has composed the scores for over 50 films, including The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, After Hours, and Seven. His collaborations with David Cronenberg have resulted in scores for the films The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, M. Butterfly, and Crash, spanning a nearly 20-year period by the year 2001. Shore's formal education came at the Berklee School of Music in Boston. From 1969-1972 he recorded with the group Lighthouse. He was one of the original creators of Saturday Night Live and served as its musical director from 1975-1980. In 2000, Shore began work on one of the most expansive projects of his career when he signed on to produce scores for film adaptations of the Lord of the Rings series. He spent a year just working on the first film, using Tolkien's texts and drawing from eighth and ninth century music sources to try to evoke the books' magical worlds. Upon the completion of the Lords series in 2001, Shore created the scores for several Hollywood blockbusters including Panic Room (2002), Aviator (2005), A History of Violence (2005), The Departed (2006), and The Last Mimzy (2007). ~ Stacia Proefrock, All Music Guide

Yeah, but for some reason they don't list it here, and I always liked Concerning Hobbits.
I've always LOVED the lotr film scores, Howard Shore did a briliant job composing them. Is there a soundtrack for the Fellowship of the Ring?

Joel, they ARE doing The Hobbit, principle photography begins in 2010! It would be a huge dissapointme n t if Howard Shore didn't score The Hobbit as the music he composed for the trilogy are some of the most hauntingly beautiful I have ever heard!

His work on Lord of the Rings is astounding. Where's Fellowship of the Ring?!?
I was deep into study for school and "Into the West" came on. I was drawn away from my book so I could see the name of the song. Read the bio on the composer and was not surprised that this haunting melody came from him. I have been moved by many of the scores listed. I just never knew who wrote them before. I will be watching for his work. I moves me very much.

Hey where's the first one? Where's Fellowship of the Ring? (These soundtracks hold so many memories for me. Amazing music!)
I love Howrd Shore's music, I'm just a little disappointed they don't play anything from the Fellowship CD. My daughter walked down the aisle to Theme for Aragorn and Arwen. It's such a beautiful piece of music.

I listen to a great deal of classical music, and to me the difference between Bach and Beethoven is just as great as between Mozart and someone like Howard Shore. Shore, however, has such an ethereal quality that it never loses its magic or inspiration. A true musical visionary.

Fabulous job on the Lord of the Rings score. Beautiful French horn lines which I really appreciate! :)
He's an awesome composer, and I think he did great job on the music. I've watched all the movies a billon times, and even I haven't gotten sick of the musical score!
.......carpe - like your name......an d what you have to say. think sometimes the classics are revered cuz.....hmmm m . . . . . . . w e ' r e supposed to. don't forget that some of the music of mozart, bach and others was backing for other performances . . . . . . l i k e operas, stuff like that....not trying to detract. not all, but many of contemporary movie score composers are creating music that will and is enduring.... . . . a n d must say have had some meaningful dialogue over a pint.

I think that modern composers posses a different kind of depth, and while technical skill is an important aspect of music analysis it's not the end goal. There comes a point where you have to ask if the artist crafting the music is a skilled painter, story-teller and architect of sound. I believe Howard Shore is.
