The Human Abstract
Biography
When a band takes its name from one of the metaphysical British poet William Blake's most allegorical and impenetrable poems, they clearly aren't taking the easy route to fame and fortune. In keeping with their titular inspiration, the Human Abstract favors a brainy, progressive take on contemporary metal and hardcore that looks beyond the usual cars and girls themes. Guitarist Dean Herrera and guitarist and keyboardist A.J. Minette formed the Human Abstract in 2004, adding bassist Kenny Arehart, drummer Brett Powell, and, finally, singer Nathan Ells. Inspired by progressive rockers like Rush and Dream Theater along with heavier contemporary acts like Between the Buried and Me and Minette's university music theory training, the Human Abstract recorded a demo and played a number of regional gigs before signing with the local indie Hopeless Records in 2005. Working with producers Eric Rachel and Jamie King, longtime veterans of the Southern California post-hardcore scene, the Human Abstract released their debut album, Nocturne, in August 2006. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

I just laughed out loud at work. Where do they find these reviewers?! |
This reviewer sucks. I like how these guys and protest are always compared their both sick, and its amazing that protest knows no music theory at all, they just play
What... what the hell? Cars and girls? What the hell planet is this reviewer from? And why don't they play metal there?

midheaven is not bad at all, the amazing lyrics are still there. but since they had to replace minette with a keyboardist and guitarist, they lost their old sound. new one is still sick, but i like the more clasically inspired nocturne. check out between the buried and me and all shall perish. and i agree, i like protest a little more, just because they are more asymmetrical in their composition. tha sticks to more of a verse/chorus set up, but they are all still epic!!!!

Probably my favorite band. Up there with "Trivium" and "Avenged Sevenfold" (Waking the Fallen a7x).
Nocturne is such an amazing album, there isn't a song on it I don't like. AJ's one of the best guitarists.. . ever. His sweeps in "Mea Culpa" are amazing. Too bad he left the band. Ah well. THA rock. |

if your looking for a heavier technical album, nocturne is by far ones of the greats. However, if your looking for something creatively brilliant, and musically challenging all at the same, midheaven is amazing. I think in some ways midheaven is better, but in a technical and smooth way, where as nocturne hits fast and doesnt let up
midheaven is completely foreign primarily due to the fact that aj wrote virtually all of nocturne. aj left...thus midheaven flopped

im noticing that a lot of people who like protest the hero and the human abstract also like between the buried and me. check any of those bands out if you like what you hear here. i must say those three bands are the best music has seen in my opinion. i havent heard any better, yet. all three are amazing live too!
Nocturne is amazing, as is the band. I just cant get into Midheaven :( i wish i could
I agree nocturne is better than midheaven, but midheaven is still a masterpiece. its really hard to beat nocturne though, especially after adding new people, you have to get that new feel of harmony with new members. great stuff still.

These guys are f**king unreal I love this s**t!!!! I Im a huge fan of BTBM an i just listened to these guys and they are the only other band that I have heard that you can even really compare to the awesome badassness of Between the Buried and Me. Musical geniuses They're the definition of awesomeness.
Agreed. Midheaven has been out awhile now, and it needs to be on Pandora. I got it at their Columbia MO show a few weeks back. They blew away Trivium lol.
PUT UP MIDHEAVEN!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! NOW!
It's a little different than Nocturne, but noticeably still The Human Abstract. It's a musical work of genius and an album to not take lightly. |
