Iced Earth
Biography
Fashion trends may come and go, but Florida's Iced Earth has remained steadfastly committed to championing the cause of heavy metal through thick and thin. After years of laboring in obscurity and undergoing countless lineup changes, they have slowly emerged as one of the greatest hopes for classic metal in America.
Originally formed as Purgatory by guitarist Jon Schaffer in 1984, the band spent five years in a constant state of flux while paying their dues on the Florida live circuit. They slowly honed their sound by combining '80s thrash influences with the classic metal approach of Iron Maiden. Their 1988 Enter the Realm demo was an underground favorite, and after changing their name to Iced Earth, the band recorded their eponymous 1990 album with a lineup consisting of guitarists Schaffer and Randall Sawver, singer Gene Adams, bassist Dave Abell, and drummer Mike McGill.
Further personnel changes saw the arrival of singer John Greely and drummer Richey Secchiari for 1991's Night of the Stormrider, an ambitious concept album which nevertheless fell on deaf ears. Disheartened, Greely decided to call it quits, but Iced Earth would re-emerge three years later with 1995's Burnt Offerings, released on Century Media Records, and featuring vocalist Matthew Barlow and drummer Rodney Beasley. Constant touring saw Barlow prove himself as the band's first reliable singer, and the band hit their stride with the following year's The Dark Saga. Despite the arrival of a new rhythm section (bassist Keith Menser and drummer Mark Prator), the album showcased the ever-improving consistency and quality of Schaffer and Sawver's songwriting, as well as excellent cover artwork from Spawn comic book creator Todd MacFarlane.
So happy was the band with their current lineup that they returned to the studio in 1997 to re-record the best of their early material with Barlow on vocals, resulting in the appropriately titled Days of Purgatory collection. Schaffer also decided to relocate Iced Earth to Indiana for "strategic reasons," prompting the departure of longtime cohort Sawver before the first sessions of 1998's Something Wicked This Way Comes. The album repeated the successful formula of its predecessors, and with new guitarist Larry Tarnowski and new bassist James MacDonough in tow, the band embarked on their most ambitious American and world tour yet. Their performances in Greece (one of the band's largest markets) yielded the double album Live in Athens, released in 1999. Horror Show appeared in summer 2001. ~ Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

I love this band. But the band Barlow just left in order to re-unite with Iced Earth; Pyramaze, is simply amazing too. I hope that Matt comin' back means Iced Earth is back in old form and Pyramaze somehow manages to release an album on par with their last two amazing albums...

I'm pretty new to these guys. What i've heard is O.k. but They seem a little overrated to me. Nice album covers though...
i love this band, not to say the other singers are bad, but i like Matt Balow the best, thank goodness he;s coming back... their new album "the crucible of man" aka: Something Wickid Pt. 2" comes out sept. 9th in the US
I love Barlow and The Ripper, Iced Earth never diappoint, I'm a fan of all their albums.
Has been and always will be my all time favorite power metal band... One of the best bands I listen to... And I listen to every Metal Genre out there... This is right up there with my top favorites. (Which includes other power metal bands and Death metal)
this band shall be the ones 2 keep metal alive for all the ages all thats all i can say
This is THE American metal band these days. Thes guys kick a**! Been listenin' to 'em since day one. Owens is a killer vocalist but I'm very glad Barlow is back. I'm glad Schaffer listens to the fans. Keep the faith!
This band is killer!!! I've been a fan since Dark Saga, seen them live 4 times, Barlow is the man! Glad he is back.
I discovered Iced Earth one year ago. Since then has been my favorite band, they rock!!!! Matthew Barlow and Bruce Dickinson are the two best front man of a Heavy metal man EVER!!!! VIVA Iced Earth!!!
heard ripper in his old band before he got together with priest. it's way too cool to hear such conviction in singing that hasn't been heard since... well rob?
The Glorious Burden is incredible. There are not to many bands that can pull off a concept album like this.
Necroblivion , I think that would be a brilliant idea, actually. Both Ripper AND Barlow singing. They truthfully are both amazing, and the truth is, neither of them will be able to sing anything the other has done, as said by Jorge Rodriguez, so why not stick them both in the band? They could trade off for the lower and higher bits, or whatever. I don't know...I just like them both enough as vocalists to stick them in the same band at the same time and see what happens.
Look peopl Ripper was an amazing artist and everything, butI believe that Barlow is truly better. The pair of Jon and Matt is one that no other band has and probably never will have. Ripper is good in the songs he recorded but once he tried to do sing songs that Matt recorded hes not that good.....sam e will go for Matt. Matt Is the best singer that IE has ever had and now that hes back IE will still remain as one of america's true heavy metal band.
i agree with necroblivion but as much as i love ripper he dosent scratch barlow and for all the iced earth fans who dont know this for some reason MATT BARLOW IS BACK!!!!!!!! !
Yeah, I'm really torn. I love Burnt Offerings, which showcases the amazing power of Matt's, but the Glorious Burden with Ripper is just... amazing. It will be in my top 5 metal albums of all time, and that really is saying a lot. The only thing I hope for is the best of luck to Tim (maybe we'll see a duet sometime) and no matter what, Iced Earth is still going to kick mainstream music in the balls and carve out their place in metal history. When will they get the recognition they deserve?
Ripper Owens' voice goes perfectly with Iced Earth. The Glorious Burden is an INCREDIBLE album. \m/\m/\m/
John greely was good in the beginning,th e dude before Greely was better, Ripper Owens is fantastic on framing armageddon, but neither one of them or any other power singer are in the same league as matt barlow
This band is awesome but their best albums are only those with Matthew Barlow on vocals
man i cant never get enough of these guys. i always like their guitar solos
I've never heard of Iced Earth until I came to this site. They are pretty darn good.
Geez, is there a contest? They are really good. I like lots of bands that play music of this caliber. Why limit myself?
Well now that Barlow is back we may see the golden age of Iced Earth and hopefully the realization that these guys are the best metal band in the world not named Iron Maiden.
Iced Earth is simply a great metal band. They have a great sound that showcases their fantastic guitar skills and incredible vocals. The lyrics are impressive, and their themes are metal at its best. Without a doubt, they deserve far more recognition than they have at the present. The transition to Tim Owens as a singer has been very good too, although I'm still a huge fan of their older work. The Ripper brings it home on their last couple of albums.
