Incubus
Biography
Incubus became one of the most popular alt-metal bands of the new millennium, setting themselves apart from a crowded field with a tireless touring ethic and a broad musical palette. Formed in 1991 in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Calabasas, CA, the band's early lineup was comprised of tenth-grade classmates Brandon Boyd (vocals, percussion), Mike Einziger (guitar), Alex Katunich (aka Dirk Lance; bass), and José Pasillas (drums). Their early funk-metal sound was heavily influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but broadened over the next few years to incorporate thrash, rap-metal, post-grunge rock, and grinding alt-metal à la Korn or the Deftones. By the time the musicians had graduated from high school, they had already been playing all-ages shows around Southern California on a regular basis. In 1995, Incubus added hip-hop turntablist DJ Lyfe (aka Gavin Koppel) to their lineup and recorded the independently released album Fungus Amongus. That, coupled with a strong local following, helped the band earn a deal with the Epic Records subsidiary Immortal.
Incubus' first major-label release was the six-song EP Enjoy Incubus, which was released in early 1997 and consisted of previous demos that were revamped in the studio. Their full-length debut album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., followed before the year's end. Incubus then hit the road with a vengeance, opening for bands like Korn, Primus, 311, Sublime, and Unwritten Law. They had amassed enough of a following by 1998 to land a slot on that summer's Ozzfest tour, and they rounded out the year with a stint on Korn's inaugural Family Values tour, by which time DJ Lyfe had departed and been replaced by DJ Kilmore (first name Chris). With their momentum and exposure slowly building, Incubus returned to the studio and delivered their follow-up album, Make Yourself, in late 1999. The group went right back out on the road, and their stint on the 2000 Ozzfest helped cement the new audience that the band's new single, "Pardon Me," was pulling in.
Although Make Yourself barely broke the Top 50 on the album charts, it was a tenacious seller that eventually pushed past the double-platinum mark. The second single, "Stellar," was a smaller-sized hit on rock radio, but the album's biggest song didn't hit the airwaves until 2001, when "Drive" became their first Top Ten hit on the pop charts. Incubus expanded their audience by playing Moby's Area: One package tour that summer, and with "Drive" still fresh in the public's mind, they released Morning View during the fall of 2001. It entered the charts at number two, confirming that Incubus had diligently worked themselves into stardom. "Wish You Were Here," "Nice to Know You," and "Warning" were all popular on rock radio, and the band naturally toured heavily in support -- this time as a headliner.
In early 2003, Incubus became embroiled in a contract dispute with Sony and filed a lawsuit to have their deal terminated under California labor laws. In April, the band announced the departure of bassist Dirk Lance. Within days, fellow Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger called upon his Time Lapse Consortium mate Ben Kenney (who had also played with the Roots) to be Lance's permanent replacement. The group remained a part of the Sony empire, however, and released A Crow Left of the Murder on Epic/Immortal in early 2004, which hit number two on the Billboard Top 200. Touring dates followed before Incubus headed home in November to take a well-deserved break.
The guys spent the next two years individually exploring things outside of the band -- including music, art, film, and literature -- though they also remembered to work on and finish their sixth album, which was recorded over a year's time in both L.A. and Atlanta. The resulting record, Light Grenades, debuted atop the charts upon its release in November 2006. The musicians then returned to their individual endeavors, with Boyd announcing in early 2008 that the group had taken a loose hiatus. Nevertheless, the following year found them issuing the two-disc hits compilation Monuments and Melodies and returning to the road for a summer tour. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Anthony...If you want some dirk lance check out Willie's Nerve Clinic...It' s not to shabby. But i am in semi-agreean c e with you. Black Heart Inertia really isn't that great. Midnight Swim neh.. But they are amazing live. It seems like the magic is gone... or maybe just the magic mushrooms. |
Never heard of them. Are they on an underground label of something? They're okay but I doubt they have much staying power. Probably a one-hit wonder.
Im excited for August to come!! Get to see them for the 2nd time! I love them live! I say once your a fan of a group ( a true fan) you always support their music. Ive seen a lot of my favorite bands evolve and change their style but I try to stay open minded and evolve with them.
for real, guys Light Grenades was horrible. what are you guys doing?? why are u getting so poppy? cant u see that ur music is becoming less and less good? seriously. and i'm sry but 'black heart inertia' doesnt back that up at all either.
okay, we all see what's going on now. now that just because u got a new bassist, u think u can make everybody believe things will never be that same with the band and just make everything easy now that ur big and got ur money. u just dont seem to care anymore |

Morning View is one of the best albums ever and it's a shame it doesn't get the recognition it deserves from critics and consumers alike. As for their more recent albums Crow and Light Grenades they deserve respect but they can't compare. Morning View will stand the time test and show us hopefully that true musicianship and song writing can live in the shadow of the impostors. And then, just maybe "To get their attention start lobbing the light grenades that burst and blind them with the truth."
I don't care who disputes this or says "But Morning View is more commercial than their previous albums." Point is it's their magnum opus. A perfect balance of pop accessibilit y and their space/rock stylings. Now don't get me wrong; I mean, who doesn't love and appreciate their earlier work, personally, I really like the Fungus Amongus jam band sound but the fact is Morning View is the coalescence of those albums, albeit in small amounts of each but nonetheless remains a must-have.

no more neighbors..- b a s h - blink sucks. only one worth his salts from blink is travis their drummer...th e rest blow, back to incubus though, they are amazing, only band of late that almost sound better live then on cd! the beatles of our time! and the closest band i have found to sounding anything like incubus is Vaeda. but still not even close!

These guys jam. I don't think got too girly. They always have had appeal by both genders, in my opinion(the only one that counts). Pardon me while I burst into flames.
if you don't appreciate change, you must be a republican (girl or not)....

Change is only good if you want a different audience.... t h e y got too girly for me. (and I am a girl) |
yeah, you know what they say about drummers.... . o o o o o o h h h h ! ! ! LOL!
Brandon Boyd - what can I say about this boy. Nothing that you don't already know. He has got t be one of the best vocalists on this planet, I wished he would play more drums though. Wished there were more drums in the tunes. :( Something hot and special about drummers / singers / and the occassional bass player - they drives me ape s**t.
Take it easy - Kim in Cali. |

From 1997-2003 they were my favorite band. They reached their apex on Morning View, I think one of the greatest albums of all time. The loss of Dirk coincides with their steady downfall. Every album after Morning View has been worse than its' predecessor. With Light Grenades, I have given up on them. This is hard because I waned to love them so much, but they have disappointed for the last time. I wish them the best of luck.
Incubus has become quite possibly my favorite band over the years, it seems they have changed right along with me as i have grown up, and everything along the way has been completely relevant to my life at the time when i first heard the song.
jjlk - BLANKET PHRASES ARE ALWAYS WRONG!!!!!
"Change" is not good, and in my opinion, the change they made from Crow to Light Grenades was in a horrible direction. I enjoyed their sound on Crow, we don't need any more disgustingly saccharine rock-pop music, which is what almost all of LG was. I'm hoping for change on their new album, but if they're determined to make themselves into s**t, then I'll just keep my copies of their good albums and wave a sad farewell. |
Does anyone know what's next (next album) for Incubus? Can't wait for it...
"LOVE HURTS" has been stuck in my head ever since I heard it! ... & by the way- to all you haters- CHANGE IS GOOD!!!!!
What I always wanted to hear were more songs like "pardon me" or even "battlestar scratchilact i c a " . The problem I have with some of the new stuff is that it doesn't have a broad enough range in sound. The instruments sound almost smashed together on light grenades, while other songs may have the range but without personality or staying in key. Plus, for such a large line up, the sound itself focuses so much on the vocals and guitar everything else becomes overshadowed . At least on light grenades
That's the problem though, I can't appreciate 80% of Light Grenades, and it pisses me off because I know what they're capable of.
Why are we judging their work? it is ALL good music, appreciate the music for what it is, not for what it's not.
Make Yourself is ONE song; Make Yourself. It's the same damn theme over and over again. Yeah, the actual song "Make Yourself" was good. There were plenty of good songs on the album (Consequence s and Nowhere Fast come to mind), but I'll be f**ked if the album was good. As far as albums go, you can't beat SCIENCE or Crow.
