Indigenous
Biography
The Native American blues-rock group Indigenous consists of three brothers, Mato Nanji (vocals and guitar), Pte (bass), and Horse (percussion), and their sister, Wanbdi (drums, vocals). The Nakota Nation members grew up on South Dakota's Yankton Indian Reservation and were inspired by their father, Greg Zephier, who had been a musician in the '60s and '70s and later became a spokesperson for Native American rights. The group released their 1998 debut album Things We Do on Pachyderm Records; the video for the title track was directed by Chris Eyre, who also directed the award-winning Native American film Smoke Signals. The group released Blues This Morning EP and Live at Pachyderm Studios in 1999, while winning acclaim from critics and artists like Bonnie Raitt, the Indigo Girls and Jackson Browne. The Circle followed in 2000. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide

Saw Mato with the Experience Hendrix tribute show in Providence RI a few years ago. Amazing talent :) My friend gave me an Indigenous CD quite a few years ago and I've been a fan ever since.

Mato has spent the last couple years playing with a Lincoln Ne based band called Kris Lager Band. Along with Kris on guitars is Jeremiah Weir on organ and keys, AC Wright on the bass and John Fairchild on drums. They all appear together on Mato's latest album Broken Lands. Also check out Kris Lager Band for more rockin, heartfelt Blues.

If you all get a chance to see them live, it is unbelievable . Remarkable stage presence reminds me of SRV with his riffs. Highly recommended you wont miss with this group

Indiginous rocks. It's unfortunate that what passes for "music" these days on the radio is nothing even remotely close to being good. Pity, we could stand to hear the "minority" become the majority. In the meantime, keep the fires burnin';)

I saw Indigenous as the opening band for Bob Dylan in Casper, Wyoming. Unbelievably good music, good buzz throughout - an Almighty experience.
|
||
What a nice surprise to learn about this wonderful group. I am sharing with all my blues and guitar loving friends

I like what I hear ... Indigenous sounds like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. Thanks for introducing me to Indigenuous. JD.

Amongst blues axemen Mato Nanji is family. The group itself has gone through some transitions; brothers and sister in the beginning, proudly doing together what most brings them joy, which was very much apparent on the debut CD. That bond is no longer as apparent. I prefer the earlier music as opposed to Mato's solo recordings.

Would not have heard these guys if not for Pandora. Thanks! They are like a more mature sounding Los Lonely Boys. More mature being a GOOD thing!

First time hearing this group....awe s o m e . A lot like Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Mato is one of my all-time favorite guitarists and probably one of the most underrated of all-time. His music is technical, soulful and powerful. Perhaps he will get his recognition in time as one of the great ones.

I saw them in Orlando, Florida in the Fall of 2005 as the opening act for Buddy Rich. They blew Buddy Rich away. Without a doubt the best guitar performance I ever saw and heard, I could have listened for hours. Unreal.
|
||
I saw these folks as warm-up act for the Australian band Midnight Oil several years ago in Denver. (Not a surprising pairing, as Midnight Oil had a distinct political bent and advocated recognition and promotion of indigenous peoples - the Aborigines of their homeland and Native Americans.) I like Indigenous well enough at the time to remember them when I came across a used CD. Grabbed it up and have sure enjoyed it.
