James Morrison
Biography
At the ripe old age of 21, James Morrison became an overnight sensation in the U.K. with the release of his debut album, 2006's Undiscovered, which wasted little time going platinum in the British Isles. Blessed with a fresh, soulful voice that alternated between smooth and rough tones (and suggested a British Stevie Wonder), Morrison recalled both the passion of classic soul music and the confessional lyrical stance of the singer/songwriters of the 1970s. Morrison was born in the West Midlands town of Rugby, where he soaked up the influence of his parents' record collection. His mother was a fan of soul, especially artists like Otis Redding, Van Morrison, and Al Green, while his dad was big on country and classic folk musicians such as Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie. During interviews conducted years later, Morrison alluded to an unhappy childhood touched by poverty and illness -- describing his hometown, he told one a journalist that "[t]he best thing is I've got memories of being a kid there and the worst thing is I've got memories of being a kid there" -- and early on he struck out on his own, earning pocket money by busking on the streets of Porth, a village near the Cornish coast.
Morrison worked odd jobs across the country while writing songs and playing gigs whenever he could, and his big break came when a demo of his material caught the ear of an A&R man at Polydor Records. Morrison was quickly signed to the label, and he went into the studio with producer Martin Terefe to record the 13 original songs that comprise Undiscovered, which was released in August 2006. A well-received appearance on Jools Holland's chat show Later and an opening slot on Corinne Bailey Rae's British concert tour made Morrison an artist to watch, and his songs "You Give Me Something" and "Wonderful World" became major hits in the U.K. In January 2007, Morrison played a short tour of the United States as the buzz about his album began to cross the ocean. Songs for You, Truths for Me appeared the following year and helped maintain the singer's popularity in the U.K., where the album charted at number three. Nelly Furtado contributed vocals to the song "Broken Strings," which became Morrison's most successful single to date. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

James MORRISON.... Absoultely Amazing Artist!!! Beautiful Voice!!!!!
he is one of few artists that i can listen to at any moment any mood and enjoy the day a little more. it's either his voice being non "mainstream" or the lyrics of his songs that i relate to, either way no complaints. ecxept could use a few more albums to enjoy
i love him with a grave passion!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
his voice is something that we rarely experience! so we should cherish his talents |
His vioce is outstanding. The level of emotion that his music can evoke is a sign that his music will be around for a long time.
I find his music incredibly soulful... reminiscent of 'old soul' when he belts out his anguish in "Pieces Don't fit Anymore" or his commitment to surviving life in "This Boy" I want to clap, smile and weep all at once.
I love James' lyrics and the way he sings them as if they were straight to the heart, like he feels every word in his soul. Amazing. I hope he continues to break free of the regurgitated monotone of American mainstream music.
I raelly like his bold straight forward lyrics.Undis c o v e r d seems raw and inventive. Don't let the recording bizz twist your talents of that gritty style to some radio 3 minute trash.
OH AND PLEASE COME TO SEATTLE, i would buy backstage passes, no questions asked.
My most favorite ever! There is nothing like James Morrisons Voice, his sound is truely one and only. My Fav song, though is hard to choose is Wonderful World. all I can say is FANTASTIC!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Nothing ever hurt like you is the song of the season. His voice gets me and the song has the right energy. This guy needs to have more concerts. He would be a big hit at Higher Ground in Burlington, VT
I love that they put Damien Rice as a similar artist. When I tried to make a station as Damien Rice as the main artist I didn't like anyone else they matched up. But it worked out this way.
Cool! And, Ray LaMontagne. And, I've now discovered Paolo Nutini is Awsome! |
He's gotta be one of the best male singers of 21st century so far without a doubt. I'd kill for a voice like that!
His songs trigger something in me that makes me feel alive. Even when I hear them at work on the regular rotation, they stay fresh.
I bought this album over a year ago and it is still in heavy rotation in my stereo. One of the most soulful voices I have ever heard. Simple put: amazing and underrated (in the U.S. at least).
just heard my first song (nothing ever hurts like you) by this artist on commercial radio and looked him up. loving him so far. love to find new artists like this.
I can not wait until main stream United States discovers James. He is the most refreshing sound I have heard in ages.I love every song, the lyrics belie much more wisdom than this young mans years.I foresee a bright future for James Morrison, can not wait for the next CD
He has the most soulful and original voice. What an old soul in a young body. Can't wait to hear more from this amazing young man.

Phenomenal- James' voice soothes even the most troubled soul. I always cringe when songs get remade, but he does them better than the originals_ i love it!
