Jason Mraz
Biography
Singer/songwriter Jason Mraz hails from Mechanicsville, VA, where he grew up a fan of the Dave Matthews Band and local roots musicians the Agents of Good Roots. But it was Mraz's interest and participation in musical theater that was his first introduction to music. Mraz moved to New York following high school to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy but dropped out a year later when he took up the guitar and began to focus on songwriting. Nonetheless, Mraz's training as a vocalist would show itself on his debut album which is marked by the pure clarity and range of his vocals.
After busking around New York, Mraz eventually returned to Virginia; but, in 1999, he ultimately made his way West, settling in San Diego, CA, known for its coffeehouse scene and support of singer/songwriters, most notably Jewel. Mraz began playing local shops and landed a weekly slot at local hot spot Java Joe's. At the same time, Mraz met drummer Noel "Toca" Rivera and the two began performing together -- Mraz on acoustic guitar, Rivera on djembe -- honing a live show that featured as much comedic banter between the two as music.
Over the next two years, Mraz's following grew outside of San Diego to encompass Los Angeles, garnering the attention of record labels. In early 2002, Mraz signed to Elektra Records and returned to Virginia to write and record his debut album, working with producer John AlagĂa (the Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer), and his high school heroes, the Agents of Good Roots, who became his backing band. The resulting effort, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, was released in November of 2002. It blended Mraz's early influences and coming of age sensibilities with country, roots rock, the poeticism of coffeehouse folk, elements of jazz, and hip-hop's rhythmic charge. The buoyant first single "Remedy [I Won't Worry]" (co-written by Mraz with pop hitmakers the Matrix) was a hit, and Mraz headed out on the road to support it. One of those shows, an October 2003 date at the Eagles Ballroom in Milwaukee, became Mraz' summer 2004 live release Tonight, Not Again; this tided his fans over until July 2005, when he returned with the sophomore studio effort Mr. A-Z. In 2008, Mraz released his third studio album, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. ~ Christina Saraceno, All Music Guide

I love his new album, I just recently heard of him and it was through pandora, since then I have found my new favorite.

This guy has it all. He can sing, write, all of his music is original and different, and down to earth. He also has been able to avoid the studio/top 40 trap.
Very peculiar... it's refreshing listening to him after listening to all this other music that is starting to sound the same.

Mr. a-z is no doubt one the most original songwr. around today or for the last decade. His music is very engrossing and charismatic, with undertones and overtones of an age old message that you don't need to worry bout at thing. The music created touches the soul and mind of the listener, and takes you on a rare journey of aboriginal rythm and rock. It has an authentiscit y that is very hard to find this day an age of our crazy lovely world. The newest album we sing is all the tour de wordplay!

I've loved Jason since I first heard him (2002), saw him live in 2004. Only recently did I learn we share the same birthday (next Tuesday ). I'd love him even if we didn't share that. And I'm 19 years older and male, no young teenie bop girl, so I'd have to say his talent is pretty universal. I like to think he's another Bobby Darin, multi-talent e d and a true star.

So vocalists and musicians are not artists? Writing your own stuff makes you a songwriter. It is a special type of talent, but it is no more or less worthy of the label "artist" than say, Pavarotti or, for that matter, Cate Blanchett. Both perform(ed) what other people write, but are(were) certainly artists.

i love his style of music it's pretty great i specially love geek in the pink

He is amazing! I think that unless you write your own stuff, you aren't a real artist. Maybe you are a vocalist or musician, but not an artist. Not to say that vocalists and musicians aren't artists, but it takes a special type of talent to put emotions into words that others can comprehend. It just leaves me in awe... But this guy is simple amazing!

Jason Mraz's music was in my life for a while, until the muse of his music turned out to be a liar. I no longer listen to it because of the remnance of pain. Enjoy him, but listen to him in moderation in case the same happens to you....you won't ever want to listen to him again.

Out of all the artists I have ever listened to in my lifetime, I would genuinely have to say Jason Mraz is tied with Gavin Degraw for my #1 favorite! Jason Mraz has such talent! His lyrics are amazing, his voice is so smooth and energetic at the same time. He's just everything you could want in an artist. Not to mention, he's so sexy!

If you get a chance, listen or watch his Java Joe performances . Just him, his guitar, and a drummer. He goes off on the most interesting little tangents with his vocals. Amazing to listen to.
Wow, this is crazy. He reminds me of a mix of Jamaroquai, Toby Mac and Adam Levine with a lil' folk rock twist! Only Pandora...:) "Did You Get My Message" is undeniably catchy.
You can't get a better package than Jason Mraz. Amazing voice, so much talent, and a goofy personality to match it all.
This sweet boy is going to treat us to another album on May 20th! HOORAY!
I want him to come live with me, so that he can sing to me every day... I suppose that's what CDs are for... however, he's just so darn adorable in person. ;) |
