Jeff Buckley
Biography
Since he was the son of cult songwriter Tim Buckley, Jeff Buckley faced more expectations and pre-conceived notions than most singer/songwriters. Perhaps it wasn't surprising that Jeff Buckley's music was related to his father's by only the thinnest of margins. Buckley's voice was grand and sweeping, which fit with the mock-operatic grandeur of his Van Morrison-meets-Led Zeppelin music.
Buckley began playing while in high school. Eventually, he moved to Los Angeles to study music; while he was there, he performed with several jazz and funk bands, as well as playing with Shinehead, a leader in the dancehall reggae movement. A few years later, he moved to New York, forming Gods & Monsters with the experimental guitarist Gary Lucas. The band became a hip name, yet their lifespan was short. Buckley began a solo career playing clubs and coffeehouses, building up a considerable following. Soon, he signed a record deal with Columbia Records, releasing the Live at Sin-e EP in November of 1993. It received good reviews, yet they didn't compare to the raves Buckley's full-length debut, 1994's Grace, received. Unlike the EP, the album was recorded with a full band, which gave the record textures that surprised some of his long-time New York followers. Nevertheless, it made several year-end "Best of 1994" lists and earned him a belated alternative hit, "Last Goodbye," in the spring of 1995.
A long hiatus followed as Buckley worked on material for his follow-up effort, provisionally titled My Sweetheart, the Drunk. Originally slated to be produced by Tom Verlaine, who later dropped out of the project, Buckley finally began work on the record in Memphis during the late spring of 1997. On the night of May 29, he and a friend traveled to the local Mud Island Harbor, where Buckley spontaneously decided to go swimming in the Mississippi River and waded into the water fully clothed. A few minutes later, he disappeared under the waves; authorities were quickly contacted, but to no avail -- on June 4, his body was finally found floating near the city's famed Beale Street area. Buckley was 30 years old. A collection of unreleased recordings, Sketches (For My Sweetheart the Drunk), appeared in 1998, and two live albums arrived during 2000-2001, Mystery White Boy and Live at L'Olympia. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Saved, lost, found, damned or just wandering, Jeff Buckley's murmurings and kindling 6-string evoke the presence of God. Literally an angel-messen g e r for our times who graced us for such a short time.

His voice is the most magical thing I have ever heard. I can never grow tired of Jeff Buckley. He is amazing :)

One of the greatest singers and song interpreters of any decade gone way too soon. He was too boundless to be defined by the limits of so-called "alternative " music--he was torch, soul, pop, blues, rock--he was music itself. He's the tear that hangs inside our souls forever...

Truely one of the greatest voices we have ever witnessed, in the history of any genre of music. Once I picked up Grace in 94, it did not leave the cd player for a year and a half. It sucked me in and pulled me under. Gone way too soon. ....I saw a shooting star tonight.

i have been listening to buckley for almost 12 years now.... its the best thing to listen to when you want to feel introspectiv e (if infact that is a word). i am verry happy to discover that i am not the only person to enjoy it.

When I listen to Jeff buckley, I almost feel like he is reading my mind, heart and soul. Although his stay here was brief, the impact was huge. He is greatly missed

Jeff Buckley possessed an unparallelle d talent, blending the skills of Hendrix,Page and Plant, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. As proficient in making covers his own as in writing truly original work. As a live performer he was generous and fearless and utterly divine. It was almost like staring into the sun. Beautiful!

I often return to Jeff Buckley to hear a true voice. His high range has been unequaled in it's individualit y and haunting, penetrating style. I still hope to wake up one day and hear that Jeff didn't drown and he is still making music like no other. Truly an individual expressing his gift of song.

Please don't play any songs from Jeff Buckley, his high pitched voice is too whiney. Thanks

Probably one reason you don't see Coldplay as a similar artist here is because
Coldplay sucks. Unlike Coldplay, Jeff Buckley does not suck. This is what makes them not similar. czarinaanna - I agree. |

I would put his album "Grace" at my number one favorite of all time. Ditto, Pamela...

Only the good die young. I am weary still at the loss of this great musician; may his music, his voice, live on forever.

Hallelujah is pretty amazing, and somewhat eerie and ominous. I'm suprised that they don't mention Coldplay as a similar artist. I can totally hear it sometimes and even some old reviews and critques of Coldplay mentioned this. Interesting. . .

I love hallelujah just so sad i just think if only what would music sound like today.

Amazing musician. Can't even think of words to describe the feeling that is expressed in his work.

Jeff Buckley is the single greatest inspiration on my musical life. Bjork's voice is also quite uplifting. Jeff's beautiful guitar playing, and haunting voice, are both amplified by tragedy. He is truly a "James Dean" of Rock. Other artists that come to mind when I think of Jeff, are Antony and the Johnsons, Cat Power, and Van and Jim Morrison for some reason. Check out some of my inspired music, www.myspace. c o m / w e a r e t h e v u s - The genre is Deja-Blues, based upon our unique perception of time.

Just an amazing talent. His songs have helped me through the roughest time of my life. Possibly the greatest "what if" artist...

He is such an inspiring artist. The first time i heard him i immediantly went on google and learned everything about him. It is such a shame he died so young and tragically. After watching his few live videos, in coffe shops and such you see such a shy and humble artist who worked so hard to perfect his music. So that his fans only heard the best he could produce

I listened to Grace for the first time About 3 years ago and practically cried through the entire album. His voice and his sound are both inspired and inspiring. He was every bit the musician I hope to someday be.

When I first heard this song, I cried. I like to listen to it really loud and in the dark, with my eyes closed. It is so powering that way. His voice is beautiful, and his version is so much better than Leonard Cohen's. It is a shame that he died so young, he really was a great and lovely talent that only comes once and a while.
