Jeff Lorber
Biography
With a smooth sound bringing together elements of funk, R&B, rock, and electric jazz, keyboardist Jeff Lorber helped pioneer a genre of fusion later formatted under such names as NAC and contemporary jazz. Born in Philadelphia on November 4, 1952, he began playing the piano at the age of four, and as a teen performed with a variety of local R&B bands. Lorber's infatuation with jazz began during his stay at the Berklee College of Music, and after forming the Jeff Lorber Fusion he issued the group's self-titled debut in 1977. During the first half of the following decade, the band became one of the most popular jazz acts of the period, touring nonstop and even scoring a Best R&B Instrumental Grammy nomination for the radio hit "Pacific Coast Highway." Released in 1986, Private Passion was Lorber's most successful outing yet, but at this commercial peak he stopped recording, instead turning to production and session work. He did not issue his first proper solo LP until 1991's Worth Waiting For, remaining both a prolific performer and producer for the rest of the decade. He recorded for Verve and Zebra in the '90s before moving over to Narada in the 2000s and releasing successful smooth jazz albums like 2003's Philly Style and 2005's Flipside. He released He Had a Hat on Blue Note in 2007. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

I am surprised reading the review above that the city of Portland, OR and the name Kenny Gorelik are not mentioned having figured so prominently in Jeff's history. But yeah, Jeff was based in Portland back in the day and Kenny G got his start playing in the JL Fusion after touring with Barry White. I saw The Jeff Lorber Fusion at the Civic in Portland in the late 70's when Kenny G was still in the band. We were all blown away. Since then, most of us got sick of Kenny G.

He gives a smooth type of feel to ever note thst is produced. It stimulates the body and mind, to a point of tender blast of quietness.

Wish we were going on the smooth jazz cruise this February. Jeff is going to be there this year. We were on the cruise last year. One of the most fantastic experiences of my life last February.
The talent and closeness to the real people that are just sometimes smooth jazz. They were real people that you really had a chance to know and get close to. My best to Wayman T. as he heals up......... |

Seen him at Rainbow Music Hall in Denver"Jeff Lorber Fusion"never felt energy like that.One of the pioneer's that added funk to jazz. Thanks Jeff.

dshard, not only did I know Kenny G (also known as Kenny Gorlick) played w/Jeff Lorber, so did Karyn White and other R&B stars. In fact, Kenny was doing that circulating breathing back then while sitting in women's laps doing his solo bit. We saw them every year at Western MI Univ. It was a show even the die hard rock fans came out to see. And Jeff never became jealous of Kenny's success. He just stayed in the background on the keyboard. He's a great guy.

Love those licks and his truly distinct gift. Keep on knocking us out Jeff!

What can you say? Everything Jeff touches turns to gold. He makes the average come to life. I have followed his career for a long time and I tell you he knocks it out of the park every time. Keep to doing it Jeff, I love your work!

Fans of Jeff I want to thank you all for being fans of one of the best unknown artist of the late 70's,80,90, and 2000. This guy is great and has done so much great music of the years that it's hard to come up with just one to be a favorite. I can remember seeing JLF in Denver Co in the late 70 and was totally amazed by what I had seen. I went out and bought every album I could find. I have been hooked ever sense anything that he puts out I buy without even listings too it before hand , because

Is a great feeling to see others appreciate Jeff Lorber, and remember Jeff Lorber Fusion! JLF has been a favorite for years, and I am glad to find kindred spirits. I love the description Jason gave: this music IS like flying through the clouds in a peaceful bliss.

A long time ago (1981) when I was learning to play the electric bass I used to play along with the Jeff Lorber Fusion albums. I picked up some good licks and learned how to sit in the pocket with the drummer. I wish the band would have a reunion gig in Los Angeles. That band was tight.

Jeff defines funk, and smooth meshed together with a kinda Gregg Karukus similarity. It's ALL good!
|
||
His music is always awesome. I have been enjoying him since the Fusion days. Much love.
