John Denver
Biography
One of the most popular recording artists of the 1970s, country-folk singer/songwriter John Denver's gentle, environmentally conscious music established him among the most beloved entertainers of his era; wholesome and clean-cut, his appeal extended to fans of all ages and backgrounds, and led to parallel careers as both an actor and a humanitarian.
Born Henry John Deutschendorf in Roswell, NM, on December 31, 1943, he was raised in an Air Force family, and grew up in various regions of the southwestern U.S. As a teen, his grandmother presented him with a 1910 Gibson acoustic guitar, and while attending Texas Tech University he began performing local clubs. Adopting the stage surname "Denver" in tribute to the Rocky Mountain area he so cherished, he dropped out of college in 1964 to relocate to Los Angeles; there he joined the Chad Mitchell Trio, a major draw on the hootenanny circuit of the early '60s but in the twilight of their career at the time of Denver's arrival. Over time, however, Denver helped resuscitate the group on the strength of his songwriting skills; signed to Mercury, the Trio recorded a number of tracks, which the label repackaged in 1974 as Beginnings With the Chad Mitchell Trio.
Upon the departure of the last remaining founding member, the Chad Mitchell Trio became known as Denver, Boise and Johnson; the new group proved short-lived, however, when Denver exited in 1969 to pursue a solo career. That same year he recorded his debut LP, Rhymes and Reasons; while not a hit, it contained one of his best-loved compositions, "Leaving on a Jet Plane," an international chart-topper for Peter, Paul & Mary. Still, neither of Denver's follow-up albums, 1970's Whose Garden Was This and Take Me to Tomorrow, launched him as a solo performer; finally, with 1971's Poems, Prayers & Promises, he achieved superstardom, thanks to the million-selling hits "Take Me Home, Country Roads" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders." In the years to follow, Denver also scored with "Annie's Song" (penned for his wife) and "Back Home Again," and by 1974 was firmly established as America's best-selling performer; albums like 1975's An Evening With John Denver and Windsong were phenomenally popular, and he continued to top the singles charts with efforts including "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" and "I'm Sorry." Additionally, his 1974 best-of collection sold over ten million copies worldwide, and remained on the charts for over two years.
At the peak of his success, Denver was everywhere -- the governor of Colorado proclaimed him the state's poet laureate, his label Windsong was responsible for hits like the Starland Vocal Band's mammoth "Afternoon Delight," and he appeared in a number of ratings-grabbing television specials. In 1977, he even moved into film, co-starring with George Burns in the comedy hit Oh, God! During this time, however, he dramatically curtailed his recording output, and after 1977's I Want to Live, issued no new material until 1980's Autograph. The following year, he performed with opera star Placido Domingo, but as the decade progressed, Denver's popularity waned as he turned his focus more toward humanitarian work, focusing primarily on ecological concerns and space exploration; he also toured Communist-led Russia and China, and in 1987 performed in Chernobyl in the wake of that city's nuclear disaster. While maintaining a solid cult following, by the 1990s Denver had largely fallen off the radar, and he made more news for a 1993 drunk-driving arrest than he did for records like 1991's Different Directions. In 1994, he published an autobiography, Take Me Home. Tragedy struck on October 12, 1997, when his experimental aircraft suddenly crashed, killing him instantly. Denver was 53. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide

I miss him. Damn shame he's gone as we sure good use a good old-fashione d dose of his gentleness and love of this country and her people right now. I may have not admitted my love of John as a teenager but now I don't care who knows it...I LOVE JOHN DENVER, all he stood for and all the great music he brought my generation! He touched my heart and my soul - deeply. These gangstas have NOTHING on John! I'm sure he's writing even more beautiful songs now that he has heaven as his inspiration! God

When I was in Kindergarten , the teacher asked each of us to stand-up and sing our favorite song. I stood up and sang Sunshine on My Shoulders. The girl next to me said it was a nice song, and she loved me. I always wonder where she is these days...

All American...t h e r e is just that quality in some artists that define a moment, a time, a reminder.... m i s s him very much....he was his gift all to his own...for many who don't remember, I appreciate the great singers such as Frank Sinatra recognizing the size of another talent born to us in this beautiful grace of land - America. Thank you JOHN DENVER

John Denver and his voice gave us songs that make you feel as if there's hope for the future; of a country that will find itself and will be confident and ....gentle.

I do have to say the coolest thing about John Denver was that his music has and will span generations. Even now artists are re-recording his music. It will never sound as good but, may inspire other to look up the original artist.

I have to agree with both of the last two comments. John truly was an artist that understood and cherished the simple things in life, and you could hear it in all of his lyrics. Sad day when he passed away, and unfortunalty his heartfelt and life celebrated way of expression has yet to be duplicated in song and style. We miss you John.

It may sound sappy, but I truly like his music and his voice had a crystal clearness about it. Growing up in the 70's, I was touched by his music.
John passed away so suddenly and so violently. Such a shame as his voice was so comforting to me - my mother used to sing me his songs when I was little. It is terrible for the world to lose such a lovely man.
My father-in-la w flew in the war with John's dad. I saw him in concert in 1978. I love all his songs but my favorite is Aspen Glow.
It is still hard to know that he is no longer with us. but his music still touches us in the heart and it send's us to places in the mountains. I saw perform in 1983 and it is one of the most cherished concert's that I hold dear.

HAS TO BE ONE OF MY ALLTIME FAVORITE SINGERS. HIS PURE VOICE PLUS HIS HEART FOR THE ENVIRONMENT. HIS DEATH LEFT A BIG VOID IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY & FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
A legend. his life cut way too short. saw him in concert when i was 6 years old.

When my brother went to Vietnam, Country Roads was the song that kept him going. When I was in high school, Rocky Mountain High saved me, truly. I can honestly say John Denver effected my life in a positive way. Thanks for coming our way, sir.

I first heard John Denver in a small club in Chicago when his solo career hadn't taken off yet. The place was packed. He asked us all to light a match and we waved it while he sang "Sunshine on My Shoulder". When he returned he was always in huge venues.

In my younger days, I played guitar for a girl, and we did alot of John Denver songs. It was great! Those were the good ole days.
What a singer he was. I loved listening to him and his soothing tone and manner. Such a shame he departed this world so early in life. My very favorite of his is "Annie's Song"
In school i was locked in a closet with Lisa M. the only 2 guitar players in the class and all we, played was John D. He is missed dearly

I didn't really care for his stuff when I heard it for the first time (when I was young), but have grown to love all of his stuff. Tragedy seems to take away our best artists. Why is that?
My life is better for having heard his music and havin been enlightened by his message. He will be forever missed. I saw him in concert back in the late 70's and it still stands as the best concert ever - and I have been to a few. All too soon we lose those who mean so much.

John sang songs that moved and/or inspired us. Most of us know the complete words to quite few of his hits. It was a great loss when he died so young. He and his music will forever be "FAR OUT!"

I saw John Denver in concert just after he had his first big hit. He was honoring his standing contracts at a much lower amount of money that he could have demanded. I got to meet him after the concert. He seemed OK and not that impressed with himself. I have always loved to listen to him.
I was a 12 year old girl the first time I heard John Denver singing on the radio.
The years flew by too fast...and John left us too soon. He will always be the golden voice of his generation. |

WINDSONG: Ahhh... what an amazing, emotionally stirring tune. RIP John.
I saw him in concert 3 or 4 times. So many beautiful songs. He has always been among my favorite singers and one of my most admired people.
I have loved him from the first time I heard his songs. A true talent that is sorely missed. Whenever I am down, I can listen to his music and he always lifts my spirit. I can listen to him any time!
A soul mate...true love...when ever his songs are heard or his face is seen tears come to my eyes...I will always honor his spirit and his music.
A real feel good artist. He is sorely missed. Wouldn't think of starting a vacation trip without singing "Country Roads". He will always be my favorite singer.
Truly enjoy the timber of his voice. Would like to hear his Christmas version of Oh Holy Night.
