John Petrucci
Selected Discography
@ Eric:
It wasn't matthew that made that comment, he was making the same point you made, lol. Maybe someone else is the moron... Anyway, I agree, it's not so easy (or fair) to compare modern technical wizardry with the early pioneering years of Jimi Hendrix. Apples and oranges. No one has pushed the boundaries of what the electric guitar can do quite like Hendrix did. I do, however, much prefer Petrucci's work, for the same reasons as listed in the comments below. |
Jimi was a pioneer...he led the way of what an electric guitar could do...
I dont know if any one caught it but some douche bag put jimi hendrix above john petrucci. jimi hendrix was so strung out on acid all the time theres no way he could be better than anyone ROFL. john petrucci is beyond technical, his accuracy and clarity are only matched by a few other guitarists like paul gilbert and MAYBE steve vai. john petrucci second to anyone, let alone jimi hendrix? never ever in a million life times matthew. you're probably the biggest moron to ever use the internet.

People arguing who the the so called "best"? What is the point. They all kick a** and no one is better than the other. It is personal choice.
Not really. JP's metal and prog oriented. He does have a certain knack for melody though, I'll give you that. EJ's much more minimalist, and has a style that's pretty much all his own. They're both great though, couldn't put one before the other
John Petrucci beats Joe Satriani (Satch) hands down. I love Satch and all, but he doesnt shred anywhere near as good as Petrucci. Other guitarists at the same level as Petrucci are Steve Vai, Andy Timmons, Vinnie Moore, Gary Huey, just make a John Petrucci station you will hear them all. They play too much Satriani though.
If you like Petrucci check him out with Rudess on the Liquid Tension Experiment albums. I like them more than some of the Dream Theater stuff.
J.P. is a master guitarist.. no doubts.. any guitarist would agree..
There ain't nothing this guy does that can be classified as just 'ok'!! He is an amazing artist and I only wish I could play as well as him!!!!
1 of 8 pages of comments. Maybe pandora is
overlooking this guy? There are bigger artists with less comment/fan remarks. Pandora is supposed to be payola free. Lots of fans -- why not more play time? |
Yes yes, quite good. I've suggested that they get Marc Pattison on Pandora, as he ranks up there as well.
http://www.g a r a g e b a n d . c o m / a r t i s t / m a r c p a t t i s o n if you want to check him out. And no, I'm not getting paid to plug him. :-) |

"I don't understand why so many people always go on the rant" "this guy is better than that guy."
Wow, I don't think I've ever heard it put that way....no need to elaborate here... AMEN brother!! |
Very. very good guitarist, one of my favs I also like Michael Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen, Satriani
"2nd. best guitarist ever behind only Jimi Hendrix"
Not even close. Jimi was a good guitarist and a great artist but skill wise he doesn't come close. |
A surprisely good guitarist here, great to rock to, however satch is still god.
I dont understand why so many people always go on the rant "this guy is better than that guy." Its music. Different artists have different styles. Some influenced by others some all their own. Even going into the comparison of such artists such as Satch, Vai, Yngwie, Petrucci, etc. saying one is BETTER than the other shows musical ignorance. You may prefer one style over the other...that s your personal taste. They are all gods of what they do and I for one hope they keep it up.

He is the Prog Metal God of course. I like that his solo stuff is different from Dream Theater. Don't get me wrong, DT is my fav band of all time, but I like that JP's personality really shows in his solo stuff. Very melodic and has that emotional feel that you get from Satch and Vai with the crazy shred chops thrown in. Great guy too. Hung out with him in Cleveland, just a normal guy. We hardly even talked guitar actually. lol
3rd. greatest guitar player of all time only behind David Gilmour and the best ever: Jimi Hendrix
for anyone that says that petrucci is melodically not up to par in comparison to satch or any other guitar virtuoso is simply musically ignorant
Very technical guitar playing. More talk about what we like about John Petrucci, and less about dream theater. Come on, If you want to talk DT, go to their board.
I anxiously await the debut album of "scorcher878 " so he can show us how it should be done.
Once again haters that couldn't play half as good as someone they lay into with their witty banter, rofl, what a bunch of duche bags. Get a life.
I don't want it to sound like we are ganging up on you scorcher, but I wholly agree with mikefont. Petrucci plays some of the most memorable, evocative, and of course, technical compositions in any project he has been a part of (DT, LTE, or solo). Also, what many people consider adding "feeling" to any guitar solo is a use of bending/wham m y i n g and minor/pentat o n i c scale progressions and there is plenty of that in any of his songs. But its hard for me to be objective; JP is my favorite guitarist
Hey scorcher878, I respect the fact that everyone has an opinion, but I have to disagree with you about John Petrucci. There are just WAY too many examples throughout Dream Theater's catalog and his solo CD, of outstanding melodies and inspirationa l playing to just arbitrarily dismiss him as "lacking". I find your statement ignorant, but I respect you OPINION.
meh, Petrucci is a technically proficient guitarist, but as an overall musician, I find him lacking. He doesn't have the feel, melody, or creativity that most other musicians I listen to do. Other guitarists like Satch, Romeo, Howe, Fabrizio Leo, and Lifeson own John in that respect.
