Julie London
Biography
A sultry, smoky-voiced master of understatement, Julie London enjoyed considerable popularity during the cool era of the 1950s. London never had the range of Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan, but often used restraint, softness, and subtlety to maximum advantage. An actress as well as a singer, London played with heavyweights like Gregory Peck and Rock Hudson in various films, and was married to Jack Webb of Dragnet fame for seven years before marrying songwriter Bobby Troup ("Route 66"). London performed her biggest hit, "Cry Me a River," in the Jayne Mansfield film The Girl Can't Help It. After recording her last album, Yummy, Yummy, Yummy, in 1969, she continued to act -- playing a nurse on the NBC medical drama Emergency from 1974-1978. Despite her "sex symbol" image -- London was known for her sexy LP covers, which make them collector's items -- she was surprisingly shy, and left show biz altogether in the late '70s. In the mid-'90s London suffered a stroke, which led to a half-decade of poor health and ultimately contributed to her death on October 18, 2000. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide

Julie - you are the inspiration of Diana Krall to be sure. But you are the bona fide original!

Ahhh, memories from childhood! My mother had a voice very like Julie
London and I remember Mama singing around the house as she did her housework. Or listening to the albums of London and Eartha Kitt, Billy Holiday mixed with Peter, Paul and Mary. Sweet, sweet childhood... . . . . . . |

EVEN though the albums I have from Julie, are scratched beyond repair, like they said the covers are priceless. They have been poster art for me for years.

i knew i recognized the name-- i used to watch emergency when i was a little kid and i certainly remember her. she was beautiful and a decent actress but i had no idea she was such a capable singer as well.

Oh la la!!! Luv that hair draped over her shoulders - her bronze skin - and that voice -WOW!!! now that to me is classy singing - not the wanna be today who sound like cats being driven over by tires - high pitch be-aughts. two thumbs up - and just the thumbs !?.

There are few artists who can sing a song that can change your mood as quickly as the incomparable Julie London. Whatever you may be doing when you first hear Julie's voice, you will do a little slower as you listen...

wow, pandora is nuts for Julie today- it's played 4 of her songs on a quickpix rotation of 17 stations!! Though NO ONE has Ella's range, that's not saying that Julie was any slacker in the sultry torch singer department. I enjoy her delivery very much.

I've loved Julie London since I was a child in the 50's. I especially loved "No Moon at All", "Laura" and "Easy Street". My sons (who are in their 30's) know all the words to her songs as we sang them on every car trip. We actually lived on an Easy Street, and sang it all the way home...

deathrockliv e s and onepaperkid, the biographer also called Julie a "sultry, smoky-voiced master of understateme n t " and "used restraint, softness, and subtlety to maximum advantage." I agree that Julie does have an exquisite voice, but not the range of Ella or Sarah. Billie Holiday also didn't have the range of Ella and Sarah, nor did Miles have the range of Dizzy, but nobody considers Billie or Miles inferior musicians. Technique does not make the musician, feeling does. They all got it!

Anyone bad-mouthing Julie London must not have listened to much of her music. She has an exquisite voice and has provided many wonderful moments in lifetimes of many peoples' personal musical enjoyment. I'm with
"deathrockli v e s " on this one and am glad someone spoke-up on the subject. |

"London never had the range of Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan." This i believe is unfair to say and a cheap shot by the person who wrote this bio on Julie London. We're all different and have different voices. Does a person have to have the range as noted above to be good? Be careful in what you say in it's implications on setting a standard.

Julie was the best of the torch lounge singers of her time. She always first considered herself as an actress and then as a singer. She was dedicated to her family before her career which was her main consideratio n in the projects that she choose. Her death on October 18,2000 was on what would have been her beloved Bobby's 82nd birthday. He preceeded her in death in Feburary of 99. What better birthday gift could he receive than be reuinted with his Julie. How thanfully we have her song-gifts!
