Kalmah
Biography
Finland's Kalmah specializes in a high velocity, classically influenced brand of European death metal similar to that of extreme metal bands like Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom. The quintet formed in the autumn of 1999 following the demise of its first incarnation, Ancestor. In less than a year after its birth, Kalmah was signed by Spikefarm Records, a division of the Finnish label Spinefarm. In the fall of 2000, the band recorded its debut album for the label at Tico-Tico studios, a favorite of fellow countrymen Sentenced and Amorphis. The result, Swamplord, is an aggressive, twin guitar-based variation on death metal whose atmosphere is often heightened by ethereal keyboards. Century Media Records picked up Swamplord for North American distribution, and the record was released in 2001. Another year would go by before They Will Return, their second album, would see the light of day in America. ~ Andy Hinds, All Music Guide

Anyone know what the deal is with the song Wings of Blackening? I was reading the lyrics and all I could think was...Wtf? Am I reading this right?

@drizzt: Extreme metal refers to thrash, black, and death metal. Cradle of Filth falls under the category of gothic black (even if they do a terrible job of it), CoB falls somewhere between thrash and melodic death metal. Kalmah is melodic death metal. Hence the "extreme" label. The extreme label is basically just a nod to the metal being less user friendly than, say, hair metal. Not saying that Necrophagist and the like, aren't extreme, but Kalmah falls in the same category as well.
@drzzt: The word "extreme" is open to interpretati o n , much like "liberal" or "conservativ e " is. The folks at AMG use commonly accepted interpretati o n s for their write-ups, and they do a fine job. It sounds like your interpretati o n is very purist in nature. This is fine, but AMG does not deserve your biased criticism because of it.

kalmah kicks a**!
hail melodic speed metal guitar solos and extreme kick a** double bass! |
Once again the All Music Guide/MGP/Pa n d o r a proves its idiocy. Since when are Cradle of Filth and Children of Bodom extreme? Hell, the former isn't even a metal band!
Try listening to real extreme metal, like Necrophagist , Zero Hour, Spiral Architect, et al. before you go writing terrible summaries like that. Last.fm owns Pandora. |

No matter how you look at it this is just some good quality scandinavian melodic death metal and it heppens to rock the f**king world and yes the keyboards are a BIG part of that rocking out. Nothing wrong with the keyboard if you can play the son of a b**ch right.
That's true. I see nothing wrong with keyboards, but if you have the means to produce the sound with the actual instrument, it almost always sounds better.
I guess that would depend on your definition of "true metal" ... as opposed to "false metal"? My definition of "metal" is instrument and age independent (well mostly).
Some bands shun keyboards and other synthetic sound production, Kopiklaani relies strictly on physical instrumentat i o n . |
Don't see any thing wrong with keyboards. Of course this is not true metal. That belongs to the 70's and early 80's. This is just evolution. My kind of evolution.
I happen to like keyboard laden '80s hair rock. I also happen to like Kalmah...Coi n c i d e n c e ?
kalmah has the greatest metal guitar parts ever just listen to hades that intro and solo are incredible and blind leader and every song is just so perfect god damn they kick a** and they havn't lost s**t
It seems to be that way with most bands. They come out kicking a** and on down the road they lose something that makes them lose their hardcore fans.
Wow. I tell you, Scandinavian death metal (and black metal) bands must have some sort of secret ingredient . .
So far it seems like their older stuff is a little better, nice raw sound. Still gotta hear more though.
These guys kick a**, haven't had a chance to hear enough of their music until now, I like it. And yeah, don't pay attention to little brats trying to get a rise out of you.
That Weeping Willow guy has insulted a bunch of metal bands on their profiles here, seems like a waste of time, no? :P
This is my first time hearing this....but that doesnt sound right, willow.
My favorite metal band. There's not enough good things to be said about Kalmah. Gorgeous, relentless melodies and no wussy "clean vocals" for the crybabies. Heritance of Berija (from the Swamplord album) is a great example of how well they mix brutality with beauty. Crazy good.
My dad would never like them. Then again, he doesn't and never really liked any metal. He is a late 60's and early 70's rock type of guy.
Excellent melodeath with a speed/thrash metal style keyboard and riffs. Vocals are a little raw, but solid nonetheless
I agree with everyone, they are awesome, The Black Waltz is brilliant as is For The Revolution.. . T h e y destroy COB, I think. Just one more mega-talente d band that hardly no one knows about, what a shame. I love the death vocals on the last two albums, not much into the black metal vocals they used on their first couple of records. They still kill!
Awesome guitar work. One of the best melodeath bands ever I think if the singing didn't make me vomit. Somebody ducktape his mouth so he can focus on shredding.
Eh, hopefully Pandora.com adds their other 3 albums Swampsong, The Black Waltz, and For the Revolution. These guys rock!
