Katatonia
Biography
Katatonia are a Swedish death/doom-metal trio led by guitarist Blackheim. The group's second album, Brave Murder Day, featured Opeth vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt and was their first to be released internationally; Century Media paired it with an out-of-print EP, For Funerals to Come. They consistently released albums throughout the 1990s. Their roster includes Dance of December Souls (1993), Brave Murder Day (1997), Discouraged One (1998), and Tonight's Decision (1999). Last Fair Deal Gone Down appeared in spring 2001. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Katatonia, Opeth, and Porcupine Tree are definitely the best in the more 'ambient' Progressive genre although PT is not necessarily metal.

someone described them as metal depeche mode or metal cure and that to me is okay-seems close-always good-black sessions and viva emptiness are my faves-darker the better-says the word fuckker wrong tho...

OMG. Is there a better, more consistently great band out there than Katatonia?!? Their music is so good, I don't even want noobs to even know about them. I know, I know, totally selfish, but if you were rich would you share your fortune with a stranger? LOL...That's how I truly feel about this band. While we in the States have labored through the muck of Pop radio for the last 15 years, the Swedes have had this band in their back pocket for the same time frame...Tota l l y unfair...
Pandora doesn't have Tonight's Decision on here? Usually I won't b**ch, but that's just wrong...

lol, thanks! :)
I think it got the point across! |
If it weren't for the combination of Opeth and Pandora, I probably would have never found this band. Big thanks to both. This band is fantastic. So far, my experience has been Pandora + Opeth = Gateway to some great bands.

I'm going to say this once and for all: EMO IS BASICALLY 1980'S PUNK ROCK. the term we use nowadays (for depressive people in general who "whine") is just stupid. and the last time I checked, punk and metal are like apples and cupcakes: two different food groups.
since I will add no more to that talk, time for me to say I'm really enjoying Katatonia. really great music from the songs I'm hearing. :) |
@ greenmacheen 6 6 6 : not all emos pity themselves. lots of my friends are emo and they do not pity themselves all the time. yea, occasionally they do, but not like you can say that you've never pitied youself before. you really should stop stereotyping people like that cuz its not always true.
WTF EMO!?!?!??!? EMO!?!??!?!? ! LOL exactly there is NOTHING emo about this band NOTHING. Ok that out of the way we can appreciate how good these doom masters are. Very clean and slow, I like it. After listening to maybe some more gutteral and harsher Doom metal these guys can clean it all up and come out great. (makes sense to me lol idc what you think). They have proven themselves, so listen.
Nobody says "Can ya dig it" anymore!!-- dude- you must be OLD!!!-- (or just a dork)
Yeah correction.. . I n no way are these guys emo but like some of you were saying "WHO REALLY CARES" anyways. It's like christian rock as well. If they don't push there beliefs or whatev on you it changes the genre, band, or music in NO WAY. Nuff Said
the greatest sin is self pity and being an emo is being its greatest offender. f**k emo kids i use their blood instead of milk in my cereal.
thats not emo. its straight edge and was started by punk. emo is what has been brought around by "pop/punk", an oxymoron in itself, and is nothing like real punk, rock or metal. to be short, emo is useless to everyone.
im emo and so what-it means feeling things and not going out and get f**ked up by shooting, sno r t i n g or drinking...c a n ya dig it ?
I dont think their emo..well maybe a little. So their songs have emotion behind them, its not like their singin about cuttin themselfs or hatin the world lol. They have a great unique sound and ghost of the sun is one of the best songs by them.
Emo: a sort of punk music. Main flagbearers: My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Confessional , Panic! at the Disco, et cetera.
Not that I like ANY of them, mind you. |
This band sounds really good.
What the f**k is this "emo" I keep hearing about? Someone tell me what the hell it is!!! |
Wish i would have heard about this band before 2009, so killer
"Deliberatio n " is one of the coolest songs I've heard in a very long time...Sound s new
Man...they are missing the good stuff here. "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" is one of their best. All in all a solid band...
To qkuharick post:Brave Murder Day does not suck, it is a great album, don't listen to the nincompoops with no musical style or talent sense- I saw Katatonia live and they were awesome!
Why would anyone ever argue about what katatonia is, why cant we just call it good metal
if you have pandora and terriozer magazine (uk) and live near a couple of big good record stores-thats all you need to learn about black/metal- d e a t h / m e t a l - g o t h / m e t a l - e x p e r i m e n t a l / m e t a l - c h i n g - c h i n g - a n y t h i n g with metal...
I dig the songs I've heard on here and am a big Opeth fan so I was thinking of getting "Brave Murder Day". Someone posted that the album sucks. Anyone else have an opinion on that? What album should I start with?
Katatonia are a Swedish death/doom-m e t a l trio led by songwriter/v o c a l i s t JONAS RENKSE
An extremely rare instance where a comparison to Tool is mildly justifiable. These guys have a great sound. I love "Ghost of the Sun" and "Saw You Drown."
what's up w/ the dates on their releases? The bio says "throughout the 90's", but the discography shows 2000's...rem a s t e r s maybe?
