Keane
Biography
Tom Chaplin (vocals), Richard Hughes (drums), and Tim Rice-Oxley (piano) are childhood friends from Battle, East Sussex, England, and together they make the merry pop sounds of Keane. Formed in 1997 while each were attending college, Keane initially started out as a cover band. They played Oasis, U2, and Beatles songs in and around East Sussex with guitarist Dominic Scott. The shtick would only last so long, for the band got tired of playing everyone else's songs and yearned to do things on their own. When Chaplin left his art history studies at Edinburgh University behind in 1999, and moved to London to join the rest of his mates, Keane had a chance to really do it.
Keane began writing and recording almost immediately. Call Me What You Like marked their self-released debut single in early 2000, and Wolf at the Door followed a year later; however, things were slow to develop. Scott left the band in July 2001 and labels weren't really biting at Keane's rich, piano-driven kind of rock because Coldplay supposedly was doing it. In December 2002, Keane got the break they'd been waiting for. Fierce Panda's Simon Williams was summoned by a friend to attend a Keane gig in London. Williams was so impressed by the band's performance, he offered to issue the band's next single, Everybody's Changing, on the spot. The limited-edition release was such a success on radio that several labels soon swarmed around the indie rock trio, eager to offer them a recording contract.
Keane signed to Island UK in fall 2003 and released their fourth single, This Is the Last Time. The band's full-length debut, Hopes and Fears, appeared the following spring. It hit the top of the U.K. album charts during its first week of release, beating out Morrissey's You Are the Quarry. As they burned up the charts on both sides of the pond, Keane received two Brit Awards for Best Breakthrough Act and Best Album 2005 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. By summer 2005, they were opening select dates on U2's Vertigo world tour and enjoying the success of their Live Recordings 2004 EP. For their second album, the dark, thought-provoking Under the Iron Sea, Keane once again joined producer Andy Green. Stateside summer shows coincided its June 2006 release. The album debuted at number four on the Billboard Top 200 album chart during its first week of release. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

Curse you Pandora!!!
You trick us. You play artists and songs that we're familiar with and enjoy. Songs we want to hear. But... you also keep sneaking these other offerings in... and playing them over and over again. Top ten radio was notorious for playing the same songs repeatedly. Every time we turned our car radio on, the same song would be playing! Don't do that to us with internet radio. Please. |

Someone please shove a dowel rod up my a**... these guys are super gay, but for some reason I like it. Son of a....
They certainly are NOT Ben Folds Five but it gets thumbs up. Props to "ChokeMe" for giving me a laugh.
Sometimes Tom Chaplin's voice shows a glimmer of Freddy Mercury, tho more sedate. Dig it.

Amazing stuff, beautiful--e s p . Somewhere Only We know.. just gets old after a bit, his vocal abilities don't have much variety. It's good lyrics, though, good to listen to when feeling like a movie.
As a songwriter myself, I admire, not only Keane's incredibly well produced sound, melodic and inspirationa l . But also their lyrics... The phrasing and pantemeter are what I consider the best in this new "soft is the new loud" rock genre.
I really like the piano being prominent in music, cuz its a great instrument that rocks and weeps when the moment is right. GO KEANE
If having a piano as the lead instrument, then yes in some cases they sound like Coldplay. But isn't this a whole genre anyway? So no, they don't sound like Coldplay. They may have similar traits but are very different.

Keane: Great.
Arguing foul-mouthed idiots: Bad. But this comment should push the latest round off onto the next page. |
I don't think this band sounds like The Ball Sacks at all. The Ball Sacks don't rock out as much.
LMAO.
Oh my God..I love you bunch of ball sacks.. Anyway... I love Keane.. refreshing and epic... |
tt for Tiffy13: I would talk s**t, but you are so young I may be breaking the law. Are you sure you have your parent's permission to be on the internet?
I LOVE this band!!! Now, if I could just figure out how to get more of their songs to play on my station???? Any suggestions? I keep entering their name but other bands keep coming up.
Oh my goodness what's up with all these crappy people leaving gay comments on bands. If you don't like keep your freaking opinions to yourself and shut you freaking face. No one cares what you think and obviously you don't have a life because you go leaving comments on random bands you don' like. Go get a life for once. And incase it wasn't to terribly obvious, this was for F**kin A. Nice name and Keane is amazing anyways
These guys sound like coldplay on cough syrup. In other words they suck a**.
KEANE is SWEET!! They are truly unique and have meanigful lyrics. They don't sound like coldpay
I feel introduced to a great new group! When I first heard Keane on the radio I thought it was a Coldplay song, now the record is straight. I enjoy this sound very much and am glad that there is more than one group doing it.
Amazing...si m p l y amazing. This band has so much talent it's sick! I love them and can't wait to hear more!
I love the pounding piano and clear voice. Other than the voice, the music's much like Ben Folds, whom I'll be seeing in a few weeks in Washington State. Love them both!
Tom has an amazing voice with crazy range. Soothing music that really speaks to me. My number one band, and has been my favorite for about four years. Never gets old.
