Biography
Kenny G has long been the musician many jazz listeners love to hate. A phenomenally successful instrumentalist whose recordings make the pop charts, Kenny G's sound has been a staple on adult contemporary and smooth jazz radio stations since the mid-'80s, making him a household name. Kenny G is a fine player with an attractive sound (influenced a bit by Grover Washington, Jr.) who often caresses melodies, putting a lot of emotion into his solos. Because he does not improvise much (sticking mostly to predictable melody statements), his music largely falls outside of jazz. However, because he is listed at the top of "contemporary jazz" charts and is identified with jazz in the minds of the mass public, he is classified as jazz.
Kenny Gorelick started playing professionally with Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra in 1976. He recorded with Cold, Bold & Together (a Seattle-based funk group) and freelanced locally. After graduating from the University of Washington, Kenny G worked with Jeff Lorber Fusion, making two albums with the group. Soon he was signed to Arista, recording his debut as a leader in 1982. His fourth album, Duotones (which included the very popular "Songbird"), made him into a star.

I am a jazz pianist and I still love Kenny G. I also love to play base giutar to his music. My music instructor is trying to lessen my love, but that will never happen!

I am a School Counselor in a high school. I keep Kenny G's music playing all day, it sets just the right mood for my office. The kids and adults all enjoy the calming and warm spirit it provokes. Thank you for the collection of beautiful music.

kenny g is my favorite musician of all time and it is my dream to buy a sax and learn how to play it and hopefully one day meet kenny g. that would be great but i would probably be so starstruck i would not know what to say to him, but i still want to one day meet kenny g.

He isn't the only jazz musician that doesn't improvise. There are many, many, many so called jazz musicians that doing nothing more than memorize and play a composite of their favorite licks, but rarely invent anything on the fly. So why wouldn't Kenny be considered a jazz musician? He does the lick thing better than most.

One thing that i haven't heard from Kenny is gospel,i think if or should i say when he does he'll be blessed beyond measure.lets hear some.i really love to listen to him play,

Funny you mention that scene. My dentist actually plays Kenny G in their lobby. I think it's to make the time spent in the chair more bearable. I mean that in a bad way, unfortunatel y .
I can't understand why, but Kenny G always makes me cringe. I don't know if it's his tone, or if the way he milks melodies doesn't vibe with me, or what, but I can't stand his sax. His band is cheesy too. Sounds like the stuff that comes pre-programm e d in keyboards to me. |

i love his music...when i was little my mom would put his CD on and it'd be like a lullabye and i'd fall asleep. Kenny G's music, well the songs i listen to, are soothing and calm. I just recently got back in touch with my inner child because of listening to his songs. It helps me remember things.

I just noticed that his last name is Gorelick. I was once told it was Golec (pronounced Go lick). I have loved his music forever. Can anyone help on what his real last name is?

I've only seen him live once, at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia , one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Screw the critics that don't like him, his record sales speak for themselves.

In reading the critic of this artist, one would believe that the writer doesn't think much of his ability to play jazz. As a jazz player, I can attest that there many forms of this genre, Mr. Gorelick has mastered (his version) of the music and therefore can claim his place in music history. I personally love a fireplace, candles, fine wine and my beautiful lady to go with long play of kenny G.
