Kings Of Leon
Biography
Initially embraced as "the Southern Strokes" for their resurrection and reinvention of Dixie-styled rock & roll, Kings of Leon steadily morphed themselves into an experimental rock outfit during the 2000s. The Tennessee-bred quartet debuted in 2003 with the Holy Roller Novocaine EP, whose blend of raw, unpolished boogie rock was further explored on their debut full-length, Youth & Young Manhood. Such revivalist music was matched by a similarly revivalist appearance -- including long hair, mustaches, and tight-fitting denim -- and Kings of Leon experienced immediate popularity in the U.K. (where they would later enjoy platinum album sales, despite a persistently lukewarm reception at home). As the band explored different sonic textures with subsequent releases, most notably on 2006's Because of the Times, those tenuous links to the Strokes were finally dissolved.
Comprised of three Followill brothers -- Caleb (guitar), Nathan (drums), and Jared (bass) -- as well as first cousin Matthew Followill (guitar), Kings of Leon formed in 2000. The Followill siblings had spent their youth traveling across America's heartland with their evangelist father, decamping at Pentecostal churches and tent revivals for several days at a time before moving onward. When their father resigned from the church and divorced his wife in 1997, the boys relocated to Nashville and embraced the rock music (not to mention the accompanying lifestyle) they'd previously been denied. Cousin Matthew was added to the lineup, and a Southern garage rock sound quickly emerged. RCA took note, signing the band in 2001 and facilitating a partnership with Nashville-based producer Angelo Petraglia, who furthered the band's rock & roll education and co-wrote the material for 2003's Holy Roller Novocaine EP.
Tours across North America and the U.K. coincided with the release of the band's full-length debut, Youth & Young Manhood, that same summer. Buoyed by the single "Molly's Chambers," the album saw moderate success in the U.K. However, it was the band's sophomore effort, 2004's Aha Shake Heartbreak, that made them European stars, with three songs cracking the U.K. singles charts. The album saw an American release in February 2005, and Kings of Leon toured the country alongside U2 before retreating to work on their third effort. The darker, more expansive Because of the Times followed in 2007. Featuring production from Ethan Johns (who had helmed the band's previous releases as well), the album proved to be the band's biggest release, debuting at number 25 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and topping the album charts in the U.K., Ireland, and New Zealand. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide

No kidding. I was just thinking the same thing (and listening to it right now). :)

I wonder why they havent added the new album on Pandora yet. My head almost exploded from all the wonderfulnes s on it.

KoL's new album kicks a**. Very polished - each of them has grown musically since their last album. Caleb's vocals are amazing. Can't wait to see them next month in St. Louis!
They remind me of a 90s band I listed to often. From Pennsylvania . Can't remember the name.

Sex on Fire is definitely one of the best new songs out there.
The way his voice drifts when he says "you.." on the chorus is something I've never heard before in any music. The overall sound is elegant and creates an image of anguish, a combination near impossible to acquire. |

There's still a lot of good rhythm in the new one and its easier to listen to all the way through without getting a headache from the repetitive heavy snare/cymbal s found in 'aha'. The songs sometimes take longer to build, but it makes for an excellent mix when you shuffle all the albums together.
their new cd is alot slower than the past three...its too bad they moved away from their upbeat southern rock style they did so well on the first two albums
It's a shame it took me so long to come around to Kings of Leon.
I hated them off the bat just because someone who was an arrogant 'pop culture expert' tried to shove them down my throat. They've moved on to the new flavor of the week band; and now I actually like Kings of Leon a lot. |
Are they similar to Pansy Division because they're gay? Or is it because they're music is gay?
dude "me" is full of teenage angst. Go listen to devildriver and john mayer in the corner or on the corner with your mother. god bless, you f'n poser
These guys are good but I don't see the big hype behind this band based off of there genre.
I really like "Knocked Up" and the other songs that Pandora has thrown my way.
ME, you may want to consider laying off of the caps lock. Or not making so many typos when you call someone else an idiot. Play nice... |
YOUR A F**KING IDIOT JAY!!! THE USE OF THE WORD "POSER" LINKS YOU WITH A FAD IN IT'S OWN RIKE SHUT YOUR F**KING MOUTH AND GO BE AN "INDIVIDUAL" IN THE F**KING CORNER DICKWEED.

Because of the Times is strong an beautiful; I listened to it for the entirety of last summer. (Excessive? Perhaps. But I've never gotten tired of it.) They are amazing live, and I can hardly wait for "Only By the Night". :)
wow such mixed reviews here.
hence the ignorance of the united states. calling them white trash? disgrace. calling them overrated? heresy. they are phenomenal innovators. instead of flapping your jaws, open yer mind n yer ears n then u can begin to experience the essence of thier twangy southern fried indie rock. u guys utterly depress me :( |

Because of the Times is a GREAT album.... Deseth, maybe you are an uneducated, wife-beating , drunk, highschool drop-out, wearing a tank-top and sporting a mullet.
kings of leon is a nice band. I have only really just begun to "get into" them and so far so good.
Once is enough when seeing them live. Each show I have seen is the same. They play right off their album and never jam to mix it up. House of Blues in New Orleans was my favorite out of the bunch.
You have to be an uneducated, wife-beating , drunk, highschool drop-out, wearing a tank-top and a mullet, to like these guys.
I thought I would not like these guys at all but they're ok. I still think they are a bit overrated. There is nothing that new here.
This is one of the best new bands I've heard in a while. Straight up rock n roll. I hope they keep getting better.
"Aha Shake Heartbreak" is by far my favorite album ever...
I totally agree with -michele skyles's "they have no bad songs" |
good band, the album "because of the times" is definitely their weakest
