Korpiklaani
Biography
Finnish folk-metal ensemble Korpiklaani (Forest Clan) formed in 2002 after the members of Shaman decided to update both their sound and name. Taking cues from both the Scandinavian metal scene and the burgeoning progressive folk movement, vocalist/guitarist Jonne Järvelä, violinist Jaakko Lemmetty, drummer Matti "Matson" Johansson, bass player Arto Tissari, guitarist Toni Honkanen, and percussionist Ali Määttä released their debut, Spirit of the Forest, on Napalm Records in 2003. The group gained a new member, accordion player Juho Kauppinen, in 2004, but lost Määttä, Honkanen, and Tissari after 2005's Voice of Wilderness. Guitar player Kalle "Cane" Savijärvi and new bassist Jarkko Aaltonen added to the cacophony for 2006's Tales Along This Road, another fine collection of whiplash folk and folk-inspired hedonism that rocks harder than most conventional metal acts. The similarly themed Tervaskanto arrived in 2007, followed by Korven Kuningas in 2008. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
Selected Discography
I hate the fact I don't own a single Korpi album. My first will definitely be 'Spirit Of The Forest'. Lots of great stuff there.

Good for you, Fangirl! Try Spirit of the Forest off Tales Along This Road.
it4703: Run out and get Spirit of the Forest or Tervaskanto, they're amazing. |
all the instrumental s I've heard off of Spirit of the Forest and Voice of Wilderness are really good. when those played on my Trans-Siberi a n Orchestra radio, I discovered this band.
I love this band! All I can say is Polka Pirates! I heard Metsamies by seeding Suidakra on a station and the sound blew me away. I ran out and got Korven just so I could hear more any time I wanted.
This is pretty damn good, sort of Alestorm meets Elvenking, from my perspective.
Damn, that was good! 'Mother Earth' from Spirit, Amazing instrumental !
Has anyone heard 'Mother Earth' from 'Spirit of the Forest'? Wow! Talk about one awesome instrumental ! !
They redefine metal by being awesome at stretching boundaries.
These guys are awesome live. I saw them at Paganfest with Moonsorrow. One of the best shows I have ever been to. As for the discussion on Pirate metal, you guys should check out Swashbuckle. They also played Paganfest. You dont know pirate metal until you've seen a band do a death metal Spongebob theme song cover in full pirate regalia.
These guys rule. I'm w/Plague on Flogging Molly, they rule but not for a metal station.
Well said, OMW. Not sure on the similarity to Flogging Molly, think I'm w/Plague on that one. Korpiklaani rules and Pandora needs to get Karkelo on here!

When you stretch boundaries like Korpiklaani, you're bound to get similarities to an array of genres.
yeah... I got a few weird things too.
but I must say Alestorm is pretty cool (or the one song I heard was good). |
The first of their songs that Pandora brought up intrigued me enough to use them as a seed, but a lot of the other songs that have come up since have too much noise in the 'noise to music' ratio. Still, seeding them brought up bands like Elvenking and Alestorm, and I DO enjoy some of their stuff, so overall I'm happy I ran into them.
Yeah, Flogging Molly and the Young Dubliners are pretty good, but I'd prefer for them to come up on a punk or folk themed station. I used Korpiklaani as a seed for a metal station, but to keep the metal as folky as possible.
I actually let Flogging Molly and the Young Dubliners go most of the time. Just call me a sucker for folksy tunes.
Yeah, just thumb 'em down a few times.
Flogging Molly's pretty fun, but it doesn't fit the theme of a Korpiklaani station... |
Flogging Molly?! What?! HOW?! WHY?! Only Pandora would ever think to do that...
Anyways, from what i heard, these guys are pretty tight. |
I agree with the last 3. Awesome drinking music, and if you happen to be playing Dungeons and Dragons as well ... so much the better yeah?
@Willow: "See above" => "good drinkin music, BEER BEER"
@OMW: Yeah, Running Wild sounds pretty much like any other power metal group, it's just that they sing about pirates. Alestorm SOUNDS like pirate music. |
Ahh yes, I heard out Running Wild on the Alestorm page months ago. Like you, I think Alestorm does the style more justice.
As for the lead, I checked it out and it was successful:
http://www.y o u t u b e . c o m / w a t c h ? v = _ z U C d i 9 _ w H I Running Wild. Another pirate metal band, although I prefer Alestorm. Fans of older riffier power metal/heavy metal will probably prefer Running Wild though. |
Maybe the lack of beer in the Troll's life accounts for their snotty disposition. Hmmm...
Beer metal FTW! I like a band with a good sense of humor. As for pirate metal, I have a lead that I will have to check out concerning additional pirate metal bands, before I post anything more on the matter. Always investigate before spewing forth. |
The only actual pirate metal I am aware of is Alestorm. Very fun band, I highly recommend a listen.
I have entered a strange new world of music... O_o
Trolls have a personality skill of -5. Hmmm, no beer for you!
Folk, Viking, Battle, Pirate ... Korpiklaani refers to themselves as "Beer Metal" ... It's all good my friend. I encourage everybody to read Korpi's myspace biography. It is quite entertaining , while informative. |
very good band, i just love folk metal and other similar metal genres, such as viking metal
oh and D&D online free mmo is opening in like two weeks, 9/9/09 |
Player must acquire a personality skill of +5 in order to utilize bonuses granted by the Mug of Korpiklaani, though. Remember to be nice to all allied players, friendly NPCs, and magical creatures!
